lol
hi zapsta
Hi dukebox!
that fleet foxes album is pretty lame
^ this
the tracks from it I've heard are so lame they'd decimate any album.
Nah.
It's great.
Yes, it is great.
But there's some provisos
one is that you actually need to like that sort of stuff to start with
another is that it takes a bit of listening but ultimately rewards the effort in spades
whatever 'in spades' means.

when did reign in blood come out?
-
Alopecia - Why?
Ghosts I-V - NiN
Rip It Off - Times New Viking
Detrimentalist - Venetian Snares
Exciting ARM - Subtle
if by "actual" you mean "obscure"
fleet foxes
went top 25 in the uk album charts...
stop spoiling my incredily dubious arguement
Well, you know.
Most popular music has been chosen by people with an ear for the inoffensive and an instinct for lowest-common-denominator appeal and a mandate to find stuff that's populist as much as popular.
Hence the existence of any concept of underground / leftfield / alternative. Where the action is at.
did you
take the red pill?
No, but I'm on the pill.
In case I meet you, baby.
boring
was Ian Ball - Who Goes There?
this year? Was Real Emotional Trash this year?
If so those two, plus Euros Childs - Miracle Inn of course!
How many of them have you heard, slug?
begging your pardon
guv'nor?
I said:
"How many of them have you heard, slug?"
does "them"
refer to what I posted or what you posted. If yours, none of them sucka! If mine, all of them. What exactly makes me a slug again?
I wasn't talking to you.
You've noticed the threading system, right?
I have just now
thanks for pointing that out, I'm sure it will improve the quality of life just a little. Fission Mailed.
That's okay.
You're not a slug. You are a nice polite young flower.
it's the little things in life
like finding out you're not being referred to as a slug :)
Awww, flower.
SLUG :-[ !?!
Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers - GOOD. I don't listen to much xiu xiu anymore though.
Cats In Paris - Court Case 2000 - OK. I'm seeing them live next month. Maybe i'll think of it moar after...?
Fleet Foxes - Nice. Just...nice. Nothing else. For me, anyway.
Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those... - Hmmmmmmmm. Gave it a few listens. Never got into it.
Au - Verbs - NOT HEARD!
<3
boring
ermmm, nope.
you're the one that listed the boring / safe albums in your list :]
I didn't formulate the list based on DANGER.
Just on what's good, slug.
ok.
what is it with everyone's obsession
of making 'Best of the year so far' lists?
but since we are...
Los Campesinos!
Why?
Johnny Foreigner
Subtle
Youthmovies
are mine.
You read the site, right?
i can understand it at the end of the year
it just seems a bit unnecessary to do it already!
It's the SO FAR thing.
The thing is
I really can't see the point of doing this until I've actually heard a lot more music. Even end of year lists are a bit pointless. Once I've known a record for a year or more THEN I'll be able to make an objective opinion on it but until then it's all about who can out-cool everyone else with their spectacularly obscure list of album titles. No?
No.
If you want to look at someone's list of their favourite new albums and say "what disgusting hipster exhibitionism" then that's your thing. But you could be accused of being a mite ungenerous.
There's a record called 'verbs' out this year?
No way. Does it sound good played next to 'Nouns'.
Any artists up for recording albums called 'adjectives' or 'adverbs'?
Check out
Conjuctives by The Parentheses
also..
a place to bury strangers
came out last year
damn
i got it this year,:(
I haven't listened to enough albums yet.
*Johnny Foreigner - Waited Up Till It Was Light
*Youthmovies - Good Nature
*maybeshewill - Not For The Want Of Trying
????????
These New Puritans
make it into my list every time.
Hmm...
Fleet Foxes
Portishead- Third
NiN- Ghosts
Elbow- Seldom Seen Kid
Errors- Whatever that stupid album name is
Yeah not bad
Portishead is rubbish.
For me...
erm
Wild Beasts - Limbo, Panto
Foals - Antidotes
Erm and I'm stuck, hopefully Roots Manuva will be in that list soon and the same applies for Massive Attack.
I think it's great
Hence why it's on my list.
I think it's rubbish.
Hence why I called it rubbish.
sigh..
Hammock
Frightened Rabbit
Bon Iver
Mono In VCF
British Sea Power
Bon Iver! I forgot that one.
That's a good one.
I don't think it's the mind-blowing classic some people do, but it's a Good Solid Record.
aye
cant get into this Xiu Xiu record at all though.
They are an awkward band, for sure.
Have you been into their stuff previously? It was a strange long road to 'getting' them never mind 'liking' them... and now I'm fairly convinced they're one of the most sophisticated bands working today...
I like
Xiu Xiu but i don't think the new album is very good.
I think it is.
Here's why:
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/2008/01/29/xiu-xiu-women-as-lovers/
.
its very hard to listen to, not a fan
I'm afraid they are these:
half man half biscuit - csi:ambleside
tindersticks - the hungry saw
moss - sub templum
various - up jumped the devil (american devil songs 1920s - 1950s)
various - end of the road 2008 preview (free with this months plan B magazine)
I hate these
Why? - Alopecia
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Subtle - exitingARM
Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
feel bad for leaving out Opeth, Protest The Hero, Deerhunter, etc.
And if reissues counted then The Glow pt 2 would be right at the top.
I'd say...
...Atlas Sound, No Age, Lil Wayne, Vampire Weekend and Burial Hex so far.
Vampire Weekend are the worst band I've heard for Ages.
Why?
Flaccid, smug tripe.
I got actually angry watching them play live. Left half way through. It was so... soulless. Like four people playing separately with no feeling of what the whole might be.
Maybe it was just a bad gig.
That said, I listened to their MySPace.
Gash.
I'm not sure it's worth responding to this.
And by that I don't mean that you're wrong. I've given up thinking that people can be wrong about music. Or right for that matter.
I thought these lists
were for "David Cameron's PR people"?
perhaps
but sometimes it's fun to waste some time on meaningless lists. You should try it!
Here we go
1. CSI: Ambleside - Half Man Half Biscuit
2. Imperial Wax Solvent - The Fall
3. This is Noth the World - The Futureheads
er...that's it
I love lists!
Its just something that Brownlove put here http://drownedinsound.com/articles/3534455
Duh
I was dissing the DiS list when I said that, not lists in general, goon.
Well with the exception of Xiu Xiu
its an equally toss list. Fleet Foxes? Jesus wept.
Fleet Foxes is good.
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/?s=fleet+foxes&x=0&y=0&=Go
Sorry to quote myself herw
but it's what I think, and I won't get it down as well again:
"These songs are tales of the simple life, fresh and honest and played with care and humility, and often sung in a thick harmonic voice chord by four of the five members. There’s a sense that these songs are everything they should be - everything in it’s right place in lyric, melody and arrangement - an unpretentious kind of perfection."
is this thread
just an elaborate JAG for this website you write for?
Don't be silly.
People are asking me to back up my selection, and it happens I like them so much I've reviewed most of them.
ok
it just seems like you haven't posted here for ages, then you show up and start posting links to another website. i don't know.
did you see martbowski came back the other day?
Your sherlock skills have misfired here, young detective.
I haven't been following the boards really. I just had a bored moment, and wanted to post a list as the DiS one was a bit shit.
are you really 30?
No.
Are you really human?
I can't be sure.
because
I thought you might be a flower or a slug.
We are all made of stars.
haha
that made me laugh. Flippant humour is great.
"You may now call me brother, brother."
"Yes, brother, I know."
And have you even heard Au or Cats In Paris?
Christ you're a patronising cunt
Yes, I have 'even' heard Au and Cats In Paris (and hey, get this, I've 'even' seen the latter play live), I am just of the opinion that they are perfectly competent but ultimately not particularly good. In fact, I think they're twee emo crap dressed up in Artrocker clothing. I do not enjoy their music.
teehee
"Wagon" got mad.
I need two lists I'm afraid
List of bands that I love and have loved for ages and I will always vote for their albums because I love them:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - 'Dig! Lazarus! Dig!
The Mountain Goats - 'Heretic Pride'
Portishead - 'Third'
Tindersticks - 'Hungry Saw'
The Fall - 'Imperial Wax Solvent'
List of records that (for me) came out of nowhere and smacked me round the face:
Boris - 'Smile' (where had these lot been hiding? I now have their back catalogue :))
No Age - 'Nouns'
Bon Iver - 'For Emma'
Why? - 'Apolecia'
Hammock - 'Maybe they will'
hammock?
what are they like? i've not heard of them ever.
suprisingly descriptive band name actually
sounds a bit like chilling out in a hammock.
Imagine if you took a chilled out sigur-ros instrumental, made it sound a bit more 'summery', took away the percussion and stretched it out for a whole album.
sounds great
i like/love the other records you mentioned in the latter list so will be looking out for them. thanks!
Downloading.
It's on eMusic! yay.
been quite an emusic love-in on here lately.
cheap legal downloads FTW.
The other hammock album on there is bloody good too incidentally.
eMusic is amazing.
Guilt-free downloading, affordable, no DRM... what's not to love?
Also, you can get the recent Brainlove back catalogue on there which of course I'm sure people of fine taste already know.
You really hope to see
people of fine taste on DiS ?
Well, you're here honey.
*giggle*

In 2007
*1967
My 5 favourites are :
The Sleeping Years
Songdog
Last Harbour
Gregor Samsa
Fighting with wire.
Just after :
Hammock

...
black lips - good bad not evil
times new viking - rip it off
crystal castles
no age - nouns
atlas sound - let the blind..
I was hoping Black Lips would be better than it is.
They were pretty good live. Same for No Age. I'm still converting to No Age, slowly. Can't figure out what's good about it, but know it's good, if you know what I mean.
yeah, i've had it for a while
but i only really started to get into it properly the other week. i love all the black lips albums, this one's a bit less punk but its still really fun
Black Lips
Wasn't this out last year. I mean I love them but they made my top 5 albums of 2007 so I'm not sure they count now?
Seeing as it's lunchtime an all
Earth - The Bees Made Honey...
Times New Viking - Rip It Off
Who's Your Favourite Son, God - Out Of Body Diva
only three I can think of immediately. Wah
Beach House!
I forgot Beach House!
BEACH HOUSE.
I love Beach House
They're one of those bands I can imagine still listening to in 10 years time. But that album was a major dissapointment compared to their first. 5/10. :(
No wai dude
Clean your ears out. And your mouth. Soap & water over here STAT.
Beach House
were one of the most boring live bands I've seen...
If only we could all prove that our favourite music was good.
All we're left with ultimately is the fact that we like it.
Which proves nothing.
But but but what have you to say about THIS?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism
I don't know anymore...
I'm 40 next year and I suppose I've realised that it really doesn't matter a fuck if people don't like the same stuff as me.
Even the people who've been closest to me in terms of musical appreciation have always differed quite wildly on certain artists and recordings and no quantity or quality of argument is going to change that.
Well said, I have the same issues
BUT for the record please acknowledge a first vote for Man Man - Rabbit Habits
Acknowledged.
not in order:
Why? - Alopecia
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
Johnny Foreigner - Waited Up Til It Was Light
Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
lollopop
Los Campesinos!
Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks
Lupen Crook and The Murderbirds
Mystery Jets
Johnny Foreigner
I'm still waiting to love Los Camp as much as I really want to.
It's gonna happen! They were SO good at ATP.
Cuteness overload.
sadly they only have 5 or 6 really good songs...
But maybe that's just me...
...
El Guincho
Hercules & Love Affair
No Age
Model 500 - Classics (probably doesn't count, but I don't care).
TNV
I haven't heard half as much this year. Mostly due to alot of computerless-ness.
Hmmm
1) Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
2) Times New Viking - Rip It Off
3) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!, or however you punctuate it.
4)Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
5) Portishead - Third
I think Nude With Boots will be up there by the end of the year, same for Atlas Sound's ridiculously titled debut.
why? - alopecia
no age - nouns
the wave pictures - instant coffee baby
the notwist - the devil, you + me
subtle - exitingARM
FR, jofo, and stephen malkmus should also get honorable mentions.
god i am so boring.
the malkmus album is cool
i like it
exitingARM made me decide that I didn't like Subtle
It's so....overblown. It's just overly flamboyant, and there's very little substance to it.
i like it.
so ner ner. no seriously, i really enjoyed listening to it, i can see what you mean by overblown but i kinda liked that.
also when i got it it was so addictive
i couldn't stop listening to it. BRILLIANT.
That's what happened to me with Nick Cave
I think it's happening now with the new Boris LP as well. OH GOD this is EU-FUCKING-PHOR-IC.
hmnmnm.
times new viking - rip it off
no age - nouns
why? - alopecia
new bloods - the secret life
dunno, held by hands/danananananananananananananananaykroyd/lc!?/mount eerie pts 6&7/something. i fully expect the new parenthetical girls album to completely fucking own all of the above though. HAPPEN NOW, DAMNIT.
Mine
Mine top 5 for what it's worth.
1) Why? - Alopecia
2) Maybeshewill - Not for a want of trying
3) Frank Turner - Love Ire & Song
4) Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
5) Kyte - Kyte
Bah
My top 5 obviously.
what is kyte
.
http://www.myspace.com/kyteband
They are playing the Discover show in a couple of weeks.
this made me remember
that I have to find that mini-album...
Erased Tapes Records
are re-releasing it pretty soon and they ship worldwide.... store.erasedtapes.com It's a fantastic album! Heard the new demos on their myspace?
My head's kinda spinning with best of lists
uhm, lemme see:
1. Microcastle - Deerhunter. This isn't out yet, but y'know we've heard it and it's spectacular.
2. Evangelicals - The Evening Descends. Psycho psych-pop...love it.
3. Trouble In Dreams - Destroyer. Greatest lyricist...maybe ever.
4. No Age - Nouns. I'm afraid to go to the Smell because I fret they've got non-working toilets.
5. Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue. "I want you, I want you, I want you...to sew a button on my shirt."
...in case you disqualify Microcastle:
6. Pumice - Quo. A noise/indie -rock marriage made in heaven.
Yer guys' lists are pretty good...but c'mon now - admit it! - mine is best.
you wish !
It's been scientifically proven
...in a laboratory, mon ami. QED.
the same laboratory that proved
McDo doesn't make you fat ?
Au are pretty good right?
bad year
biritsh sea power
fleet foxes
meneguar
deerhunter
and when it happens;
Fucked Up.
