Circa Survives last album, Cinemechanica "The Martial Arts" and Humanfly "II" although admitedly half of that was becuase it was only released on CD this year, I generally seem to get into buzz bands quite late due to me not wanting to "believe the hype" but this year has shown me that some bands really do deserve all the praise that comes their way.
Other notables:
Polvo - Todays Active Lifestyles (love 'em all)
Calla - Strengh in Numbers
Handsome Furs - Plague Park
Rykarda Parasol - Our Hearts First Meet (thanks lyle!)
Songs:Ohio - Magnolia Electric Co
Swan Lake - Beast Moans
Carissa's Wierd - Songs About Leaving/You Should Be Home Here
That's my favourite album of all time, although I luckily I have a Mojo reading Dad, who bought it in 2003 and I stole it off him.
My favourite discover of the year has been the soundtrack to Harold and Maude by Cat Stevens. I've never seen the film, but the soundtrack is basically ALL my favourite Cat Stevens songs on one album, with a few (brilliant) songs he recorded just for the film, and you can't get anywhere else. It only got re-released last year, but it's a must-have.
actually bought it last year, but never really gave it much attention, properly sat down the other week for a listen and was blown away. If i'm ever in a band I want to sound like them : )
I bought it this year but the albums in it have been around ages, its sublime.
Burial's first album has been getting lots of spins recently, I think I got it late last year but have played it more recently.
Deep Chord Presents - Echospace. I have no idea how this one passed me buy until this year.
Iggy Pop - The Idiot. I had heard a few of the tunes before but I got this album at the begining of the year and its damn good. Night Clubbing is my fav on it.
David Bowie - Low. The only album of Bowies I have and I got it this year its wicked. I love the second half and its instrumental freakery. The 1st half has some ace moments too.
Did you get the Faust/Faust So Far 2-for-1? If not, So Far is probably the one that's closest to IV in sound. I've got 71 Minutes and the BBC Sessions, but there seems to be a fair bit of overlap between them.
I love the Faust Tapes so much. I found it in friend's dad's record collection when I was about 15. It really opened my ears to new stuff.
The ones that most strikes me at the moment is Jay Reatard - Blood Visions and The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic. Both punky garage rock masterpieces me reckons
Pre-Emptive False Rapture LP from last year = absolutely amazing. If you've ever been curious enough to wonder what doom metal, prog rock and disco would sound like mixed together, this is it.
in the last week, anything else would be too hard to think about.
GAS - Nah und Fern
Terry Riley - A Rainbow in Curved Air
Michio Kurihara - Sunset Notes
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating
The Wrens - The Meadowlands
Bought it in Oxfam Music and got arseholed with a load of mates listening to it on the last day of the football season. It's fucking incredible and still sounds fresh now.
My local record store has a sub pop 20 campaign going with loads of releases for £7 so i bought The Way Of The Vaselines and Superfuzz Bigmuff, both incredible.
After years of brushing them off, apparently I really like Sonic Youth. Which is odd, because I've wanted to be Thurston Moore for ages, despite not liking his band before. LOL
Tiger Bear Wolf ?
Did they choose that name as a joke ?
I don't know
MySpace them. They are quite responsive.

Meat Puppets II
Fecking brilliant. Even if you discount those songs Kurt Cobain wrote!
I've just ordered this
I'm expecting great things.
The Microphones - The Glow Pt2
easily the best, thanks to re-issue.
Other notables:

Faust - Faust IV
Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
Have you listened to any other Faust stuff?
yep!
s/t & The Faust Tapes.
what else would you recommend?
Ah, it looks like you've got it covered really.
Did you get the Faust/Faust So Far 2-for-1? If not, So Far is probably the one that's closest to IV in sound. I've got 71 Minutes and the BBC Sessions, but there seems to be a fair bit of overlap between them.

The Faust Tapes original vinyl
is probably worth quite a bit these days, it is a fantastic album though.
I've been meaning to get 'Faust So Far' for quite some time now, I'll stay on the lookout for the BBC sessions too. cheers!

I'm really irritated I missed them.
murder ballads
but damn this is an old thread
About half of the albums I listen to at the moment
were all released years ago but I've only just found them.
Most significantly, You Made Me Realise and Tremolo eps by MBV, culminating in two of the best gigs I've ever been to.
Agreed
with the David Bowie - Low suggestion, bought it a while back but it's just started to click for me.
Circa Survive's Juturna and On Letting Go have been slight revelations too.
the hold steady -
boys and girls in america.
i was a bit slow getting around to this album, despite several of my mates raving on about it to me for at least a year and a half now.
Hot Cross - Risk Revival or
Comeback Kid - Broadcasting

mount eerie by the microphones - it's 5 long songs with tons of different good bits in them, where the glow pt. 2 had tons of songs with a couple in.
^^^
I get bored half way through The Glow pt. 2, but Mount Eerie is brilliant from start to finish. Probably all the drums.
was it
a nice cave?
a nick cave?
'My Aim Is True'
Elvis Costello.
Bought it in Oxfam Music and got arseholed with a load of mates listening to it on the last day of the football season. It's fucking incredible and still sounds fresh now.
yes it is embarrassingly full of awesome tunes
the first 4 Elvis Costello albums are pretty much flawless and have not dated a bit
either
Teenager by The Thrills or Grand Prix by Teenage Fanclub.
Paris Motel - In The Saltpetriere

Scott 4 by Scott Walker
or Alive IV: Symphony by Kiss
Unrest - Imperial F.F.R.R
Pretty freakin outstanding indie-pop.
The Vaselines

Suicide - Suicide
It's 'best album of the 1970s' material.
Sonic Youth - Washing Machine and Goo
After years of brushing them off, apparently I really like Sonic Youth. Which is odd, because I've wanted to be Thurston Moore for ages, despite not liking his band before. LOL
