I do think it's funny

How many people are suddenly fans of his just because they want to be seen as right on.

oh yeah

cos he was an underground act up until January 2008

No, he was very popular

But not with many indie types. Now they're falling over themselves to proclaim their fanhood. See Beth Ditto saying that Jay-Z is the artist to finally make Glastonbury a good festival.

well, due to glasto he's being talked about

in indie circles a lot more, I wouldn't begin to assume that these people weren't fans beforehand. He's been pretty high profile for a decade now.

indie types

always claim to like hip hop. it makes them diverse and intelligent.

it's like hip hop types claiming to like metal. and then saying they dig linkin park.

THAT IS LIFE

oh shut up

I like his albums

no masterpieces but some pretty meaty singles that I would LOVE to sing along to at a festival.

"99 Problems

and a bitch ain't one of em"

COS YOU'RE A GAY

intelligent

witty
biting
funny.

well done,

you have won the entire internet

this thread was inspired by my housemate

trying to convince me that Jay-Z is brilliant, despite him not liking any hip-hop and me being quite into it.
PLUS there are loads of guys in the UK who are far better than him, but won't get any recognition.
dammit.

jay z is brilliant though

he's a mainstream artist with genuine credibility.

i'd like to hear some uk hiphop that rivals him, but the stuff i've heard so far (black twang, braintax, skinnyman)sounds shit - bad production and horrible rapping.

I do like Ty though.

i'd say MF DOOM

and anything he does is better.
but despite being british i guess you can't really put him in with uk hiphop as such.

i had no clue mf doom was british!

he doesn't sound it (although there is a slight slick rick/laid back vibe i guess)

that's what i read.

Madvillain is the best hiphop project ever. fact.

Roots Manuva

I dont claim to know a lot about hip-hop, UK or US, but Roots Manuva is brilliant and he's British.

yep

his first 2 albums are really good (temporarily forgot about him)

If i say I don't like Jay-Z

people always tell me to listen to Big Pimpin' but theres nothing about that song that stands out as being an excellent example of the genre to me. I really don't get the fuss about it..

99 Problems is a choon though. Probably even better at Glasto. Anyone heard if theres a chance of doing Umbrella? That would be awesome

I just

realized how much I am looking forward to him at Glasto tonight. I avoided it all yesterday but his performance should be epic.

I just finished reading

Slaghterhouse 5. It was brilliant

Like most major hip-hop acts

he's terribly inconsistent. For example, Blueprint is a masterpiece, Blueprint 2 is shite. Kingdom Come was a mess, American Gangster is amazing.

So, no, I wouldn't say he's really pretty crap, but he has done some really crap albums/songs.

he's better than 90% of people that have headlines glastonbury

he's amazing when he's at his best, most of his best stuff is behind him but he puts on a good show. obviously there's much better rap, but it's less popular

Pretty much this^

There's been so much idiotic stuff written about Jay-Z and Glastonbury (mainly by the bloody Guardian)

Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint, Black Album and American Gangster are all great albums.

Indie love of hip-hop can be pretty cringing sometimes, but Jay-Z is genuinely talented.

Agreed

Jay-Z is as credible a hip hop megastar as you're gonna get, bar, perhaps, Kanye. Fiddy may be bigger but has little integrity. Mos Def and Common, say, may be more conicous but aren't as well-known.

There's other rappers who I like more, but none of them have the status to headline Glasto.

I love MF Doom, and as ace Roots Manuva was on the main stage at Leeds when I saw him a few years back, neither have the stature to headline the Pyramid stage.

Jay is ok

if i was at glasto i would go see him the other headliners are pretty lame
