there were a lot of people around me who simply couldn't hack it and had to leave. I went without earplugs in the end but, with tinnitus rattling round my head, I'm not sure how wise that decision was.
i whipped out my free earplug packet and got them on standby.
didn't have them properly in, just half in to take that top end screeching away. took them out 3 or 4 times throughout, after each time it got louder, and it was literally ridiculous. all these jet engine comparisons are so true, though im tempted to say tonight they were louder than any jetplane on earth. i kept looking up, i started to get a bit para about the bits of the roof falling off in this old theatre.
but, being an idiot, I decided to see what all the fuss was about when they started playing You Made Me Realise so I took them out. They weren't joking, it really is fucking insane. I thought Mogwai Fear Satan was loud live but that was streets ahead.
Couldn't help but notice the distinct smell of skunk at that point, too. And I was delighted they played Thorn, what a great song.
about 4 or 5 songs off the end, the volume seemed to jump up a substantial amount, and the guitars started to get painful, but i held out til the holocaust.
well, i've finally seen MBV, one of my favourite bands ever. very content tonight.

i thought the volume really kicked up then.
drummer made a few mistakes, but i thought the sound/performance overall was great.
it's hard to get good sound in such large venues in my opinion, that's the best i've ever heard in the apollo, and i doubt it's sounded better, it's always dire. that place managed to ruin the Arcade Fire for a me.
the loudest gig ive ever see nat the apollo, and ive seen a milliuon gigs there, it was unbelievable, anyone who says it was quiet is just either deaf or trying to look 'hard'

First half of the set did seem quiet by MBV standards at any rate, while the second half, although louder, didn't seem anywhere near the same earsplitting levels as the Roundhouse last Saturday in particular.
Thought "The Holocaust" seemed a tad longer though. 25-30 minutes maybe.

Plus they REALLY need a synth player rather than just someone triggering samples that the drummer isn't in time with. It wasn't really until halfway through the set - when I took my earplugs out and realised it wasn't really that loud - that I started to enjoy it - To Here Knows When (despite the balls up at the start where you could hear just how much was on backing track) and Only Shallow were incredible. The holocaust really was everything people said it would be too, at times I could feel my whole ribcage vibrating, though even weirder was when my eyelashes and tongue started to wobble - now THAT was unique. The projections were great too.
It was a great gig but I agree they were too reliant on backing tracks. I thought the drummer was sensational. It was no louder than a normal gig - certainly not loud enough to prevent the fucking wanker in front of me talking to his fat, ugly, annoying bird throughout.
last night - Might have been on 'Nothing Much To Lose' I think(?) when Shields seemed to give him a filthy look but aside from that I thought he was pretty faultless.

some of the faces of crowd members about 20 minutes into the holocaust were priceless.

way too quiet w/ strange sound-levels, quite a few mistakes, and although the venue was fantastic i didnt think there was much of an atmosphere.
but then again most people seem to think the Roundhouse was much better than ICA. i probably know nothing.

compared to the last two times id seen them. didnt use earplus at all, and no ringing this morning.
