My boyfriend & I got robbed while we slept at Glastonbury

so this thread is a total FUCK YOU to Glastonbury, the security who we told twice that we were scared to go to sleep after our mates got robbed the night before and seeing dodgy people around camp and a massive FUCK YOU to the dude who climbed over my boyfriend and I while we were asleep, moved our bags from our hands and then threw our belongings all over the floor, took our money and then tipped my sun cream which was in my bag all the inside. We both work in jobs which we hate for 40+ hours a week, and I've just been made redundant so all we wanted was a weekend away and some fun :(

Oh yeah, Jay Z was good.

sounds horrible

i hope you're alright.

this is why i'll never go to a festival where you camp.

We weren't at the time

we thought we lost everything as we couldn't find my boyfriend bag, which had his camera, phone and the car keys.

I'm not doing this thread for sympathy, I'm doing this as I want to people to know that Michael Eavis and Glastonbury isn't the be all of all festivals, and the fact people don't wait while you're asleep to get yoour stuff... they will more than willing crawl over you and move you while you sleep.

no

it's like choosing to spend money that could go on a festival like this on a festival like ATP, which feels much safer (plus the music is better and stuff)

but forget that.

no, I would rather spend my money on somewhere safe

like ATP where there was no trouble what so ever.

it's fucking disgraceful that people rob at festivals

and i'm truly sorry that it happened to you. really. Glastonbury is tiring enough and hard-work enough without cunts doing stuff like that to you.

But on the other hand, Glastonbury is one of the safest feeling festivals i've been to. I've been 8/9 times now and never had a tiny amount of trouble. No-one I know has ever had any trouble there.

You were simply VERY unlucky. When you get 200,000 people and a shitload of alcohol/drugs together in one place there is bound to be some crime.

Oh god, are you ok?

I actually thought the general level of cuntery was down this year, but there were still some prize specimens about. Sadly no matter where you go people are scum.

We are now, but I wish to gone that we never

go through that ten minutes again where we sat in the tent wondering what the fuck just happened and what the fuck are we doing next.

I'm so damn close for writing a letter to Mr Eavis -- the upside down head.

Shit

where were you camped? I seen a few scallys wondering round the camp site by the other stage!

Row Mead

Opposite the Pyramid Stage.

sounds like

you were camped near where I was in 1999, my first and last Glasto. I got robbed too. Not when I was sleeping though, that is the lowest of the low.

Goes to show that all the money spent on a massive fence and the shower of shit that is the registration system didn't make a blind bit of difference.

And yeah, i'm another recent ATP convert. I couldn't believe how good the atmosphere in camber was.

thats horrid

and little consolation now but I got robbed in the same place in 1997 and moved straight away.

the field was crawling with thieves at about 5am. was horrible to see.

if you go again (and you should) camp down the bottom of the site - Pennards Hill. Scumbags are lazy ;-)

Only time I camped at that site..

ALL of my mates got stuff nicked. On the last morning, some kids camped next to us took stuff to their car, and came back for the tent, only to find someone had stolen that too.

This is fucking shit

Same thing happened to my mate at Leeds festival last year, the security there were pathetic as well :-(

My boyfriend went down

and then didn't do anything, so I played the girl card and my best friend and I stated how scared we were and they came up and walked off.

The sad thing was that we went to bed at 2:30am, and a friend woke us up at 4am saying 'kayleia! did you sleep with your tent open! kayleia!'

:(

Sorry to hear it

That must be horrible, particularly someone being in your tent at night.

This kind of thing is why I don't like camping at larger festivals, the last time I went to Reading there were so many imbeciles around it was quite frightening, I just had to guard our tent with a mallet. Not much fun at all.

Disgraceful

but not surprising. The whole commercial aspect of Glastonbury attracts that kind of person - has done for a decade or more actually - but obviously Jo Whiley and Edith Bowman won't mention that while they're raving about Shangri-La or Gabriele Cilmi's acoustic session.

We have been robbed 3 years in a row

first time was out of a bag, second Simon's tent was slashed and now they are willing to crawl over you while you sleep.

What on earth are you meant to do, sleep in shifts?!?!?

hmmm

padlock yourselves in ?

Though the benefits may be outweighed by risk of flooding or fire...

slashing the tent?!

if they wanna get in, they will it seems!

they slashed the tent

while your boyfriend was in it ????

Agreed, it's not the money

it's the principle that these people saw us fast asleep and undid my sleeping bag to check for more stuff and did what they did. When it happened I wished I was awake but more I think about it, jesus knows what he could have had on him.

Also, telling security a couple of times we were scared... and not getting a lot back in return.

Thing is

thefts at events like Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds and T In The Park are commonplace now, and one of the reasons why a lot of real music fans (sorry if that sounds pompous but...) head for the continent or the more comfortable confines of ATP and its ilk.

True

ATP all the way for me.

i'm not sure....

Glastonbury's *reported* crime this year was about 500, out of 175 000 people. That doesn't sound like a lot to me, considering the risk of crime in most cities.

There probably wasn't a lot security could do, once it had happened.

Doesn't sound like you've had much luck at Glastonbury. 3 years in a row? That's really bad.

We told them before

it happened, siiigh. I really ought to stop going over it but I've never been so angry in my entire life! I'm usually a very happy person!

eh?

You told them you were going to be robbed?

We had a feeling we were

due to our friends next to us being robbed and seeing dodgy people about.

Sorry you and your bf were robbed

but why is your description of events so different to you post on efests?

Forget that

it's pretty irrelevant.

this happened to me at reading

a few years ago. it was a thoroughly rubbish thing to happen and there was no hope of getting it back.
luckily we were with some generous friends who looked after us for the weekend.
i would have loved to have caught them doing it, though it probably would have been quite a sight to see me chasing after them in my boxer shorts at 3 in the morning.

I got the letter from the Police saying

that they aren't following it up.

I didn't have my cards with me, so my generous boyfriend bought all my food for me -- and I eat a lot.

HAHAHAHA :D

amazing. :)

Would it be ethical

to make a trap.. maybe leaving your tent slightly open.. and pretending to be asleep.. and then when someone comes in and tries to steal your stuff hitting them with a mallet, rendering unconcious, then putting them in a portaloo and tipping it over?

I don't we had a mallet

ut maybe a can of Heniz pork and beans would work?!

yep, stuff it in a sock

perfect

Amazing

I will get tempted by the pork and beans mind you.

No mallet? What do you hit your tend pegs in with?

MAybe a full can would do the trick.
I'd like it if they had 'executions' for thieves though, like them being pushed into a river of piss/shit, as a warning to others.

yeah or those horrid toilets i.e. a cesspit with a seat

i've ruined most of my tent pegs from stamping them in :(

It makes me sad when people can't put up tents :(

What's the deal with kids burning tents too? At Reading if you left your tent there then it'd be donated to a homeless charity. But nooooo... the kids would burn them, filling the site with horrible fumes. Honestly, have these kids ever been away from their parents before?

I've been told to burn my tent at Oxegen :/

I'm not looking forward to my first camping festival, this thread isn't helping lol

they had capture tents last year

got to love a bit of entrapment at glasto

My boyfriend & I got robbed while we slept at Glastonbury

and all they left was this T shirt!

I blame

James Blunt fans.

Why blame Eavis though?

The guy goes to a lot of trouble every year to put on a festival for the (operative word) public.

He doesn't personally groom every person who buys a ticket, so why exactly should he be blamed for your misfortune?

I feel sorry for you, and I can relate to the horrible feeling of being robbed, but blaming one man is a bit unfair.

ps. If you work in a job that you hate, surely you're not so sad at being made redundant?

Having no money, and the thought of not having another job on the horizon

and having bills to pay makes me sad.

yes

I could imagine it must have been truly horrible knowing people have been in your tent while you were sleeping. You must want to kill the shits. But Eavis et al have stopped a large number of these arseholes coming in by putting up the fence, making it much more effort for any of them to get in.

But what exactly do you think the security ppl could have done?

They can't go round kicking out ppl that look like scallies.

And they are hardly going to guard your tent for you, that would be unfair on all the other punters.

Exactly the same thing happened to me at the Big Chill last year

Fucking cunts.

At least 150 people got dry bummed by some inbred twats who just hit the camp on the first night.

But I got over it and got dressed up as a cowboy after I reported it at 9am the following morning.

Everyone deals with it in different ways, I suppose.

Oh I started drinking afterwards!

and had a fantastic weekend afterwards, trust me. :D

I've heard this loads of times about Big Chill.

I think it's got a bit of a reputation for it.

This happened to me at Leeds last year.

It was horrible.

I just remember waking up and seeing my tent door open and my clothes all lying around in the porch bit.

People are just buying tickets to the festivals so that they can rob people.

The best festival security I've come across,

was at Bestival. I got challenged by security a couple of times going into my own tent. It was good to know that they were keeping an eye out.

Well, i don't suppose you can prove it,

but by stopping people and talking to them, they probably had a good idea if people were being dodgy (we had hoods up at the time so may have looked a bit suspect...).

i dunno. some criminals are pretty smooooth,

could easily give the impression it's their tent. i doubt it's all that effective a method of dividing up the crims and the innocents.

You've been

watching too many Michael Jackson movies.

im camping for 8 nights at benicassim

are we going to get kidnapped?

Glastonbury is the safest festival in the world

literally

and it's actually safer than real life. and the security are pretty nice bunch, so like, sorry and all but there's hardly any crime whatsoever compared with other festivals since they build the massive fence

also "The whole commercial aspect of Glastonbury attracts that kind of person" is a pretty horrible statement.

as much as I love Glasto

"Glastonbury is the safest festival in the world"

is clearly utter bollocks

Glad it didn't ruin your weekend

and you had a good time there. Completely horrible and I feel bad that I was complaining about the person camped near us with an annoying laugh.

I guess it's just (bad) luck really with these things are there areas that are more notorious for this kind of shitty behaviour other than the pyramid stage.

Write Eavis a letter though, don't be too harsh to him and you might get something out of it ;)

Absolutely shocking.

Really disappointing to hear as well. I was under the impression it was lovely this year with not much trouble. I don't blame you for hating it and Eavis one bit.

i think crime may have been up this

year because of the fact that tickets went on general sale (over the net and at hmv, at the gates etc.)

your average petty criminal isn't going to waste time getting involved in the scrum for tickets on the day they put them on sale, but if they can just rock up and buy a ticket on the day (and then rob a lot of tents)...much more appealing.

On a lesser note

I had my wellies nicked last year when i'd taken them off and was monging out in one of the cafes. Thieving hippys...

Thats fucking horrible kayleia...

really sorry to hear that.
Cannot believe the audacity of some people.
I think it would be worth writing if for nothing else to highlight the stewards apparent blase attitude towards towards the whole thing.
I am glad you went on to have a good time though.

Hahaha

My mate got robbed at Glasto a couple of years back, and the security basically shrugged at him.

Another reason why lots of other festival >>>>> Glasto.

I'm sorry to hear this

as I was when I read it on eFestivals. I've been robbed there a few times in the past, although not recently. We ALWAYS got robbed when we camped above the Pyramid stage.

But like I said previously, I don't think you can blame Eavis and the festival for idiots. Put 150000 people in a small space and there'll be some. I didn't blame the V organisers when some idiot torched a friend's tent by chucking a gas canister on a fire...

eavis can't do a security/background check

on everyone that buys a ticket. how is it glastonbury's fault that you got robbed?

where did you camp out of interest?

wait..

you have a boyfriend? :(

yes jordan...

hahaha

wait

then that means you have a girlfriend?

OH NOES

This happened to us in 1998

when we were all students. They came in while we were sleeping and took our wallets and took the cash out of them.

They cleared out loads of tents that weekend in the area we were in. It pissed me off a fair bit, I can tell you.

me too

Been to Glasto 5 times and never had any bother, the first time before the fence went up and about 200,000 got in the site which was crawling with scallies.
Got tent robbed twice last year at T in the Park , they pinched my floor mat but left the booze!
A friend got her tent nicked, clothes, contents the lot at t in the park.
Saw a ned getting arrested in the camp site at t, they got him pinned on the bonnet of the security jeep and someone shouted " your going to jail to get bummed"

sorry

its crap to read stuff like this, but when festivals get so mainstream, it attracts some pretty crappy people.

I'm never going to Leeds or Reading again after some of the shit I've seen there and I would never think of going to Glasto' anyway.

Stick to the quieter festivals, they always have better music on anyway.

ATP, Glade, Bloc are probably the only ones I'd go to.

Also sorry to hear that...

Similar thing happened to me and my friend at Bestival last year. Woke up to find her bag (with phone, camera, purse) missing from tent. We walked out to find other things from the bag strewn in the grass on the way to the path. Police were as helpful as they could be, but nothing found. What was sad, perhaps especially at Bestival, is that we then we felt suspicious and on our guard for the rest of the time. Maybe there's a tipping point in size/profile for festivals after which you might as well be in any public space with all the attendant risks.
