hello folks, I warned you I was gonna do this, I think this a is a reasonable time. A good friend and myself are putting on a gig at the Larrick, less than 10 minutes away from Finsbury Park train/tube, or next to Crouch Hill train if you prefer (N4 4AU).
This is primarily to raise funds for the social night of the refugee council in Brixton, which is where Sarah and I volunteer, and the night involves pool, an arts table, board games, music, some food, the occasional workshop (guitar, camera, that sort of thing) and a lot of chat (which i think is the most important thing, day to day english skills). We need money for rent, and we hand out food, take them to the seaside in the summer etc.
Regardless of the cause, the bands playing are great - My Sad Captains are brilliant - www.myspace.com/mysadcaptains - like an english pavement as a lazy description.
We Used To Make Things are a perfect summer band, bouncy and chirpy and so on - www.myspace.com/weusedtomakethings
and then there's Jess, a friend of ours with a lovely voice, singing alongside an acoustic. My lot aren't playing anymore :(
There will be a raffle too!
Map and so on is here http://tinyurl.com/3t9xxp (it's a timeout page), please PM with questions. I apologise in advance for the shameless bumps this will get. There is also a facebook page, which i'll put up, er, soon (no access at work)
I'm away unfortunately
but good luck with this.
Jjjjjjjj
JJjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj
nuts
forgot to say who it's for really - our 'clients' (for want of a better word) tend to be young and unaccompanied refugees (ie 14-18), at the moment generally from Iraq and Afghanistan, but also from Pakistan and North Korea, a fair few still from Eritrea, and then random ones (there's a guy from Brazil who arrived a month ago).
Please come if you can, there won't be any boring speeches or anything, just live music and a few DJs!
AND A RAFFLE!
Argh, I'm normally around FP but won't be
this weekend. I probably would have gone. Feel the chairty guilt weighing heavily on my shoulders.
please don't
that's not what i meant to convey. It's just we won't mention it much on the night so i think i should now
this sounds fantastic.
i plan to attend.
here's the facebook event link for you:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=22963706755
thank you
and hooray!
i mean the other way round.
:)
I'm going to be there, and
I'm going to get absolutely plastered.
Anything I can do to help the poor refugees in my own unique way.
this is actually a concern of ours
we can't let them come as we'll be screwed. It'll be the same old story tonight.
"Why are you all waiting outside?"
"Er, we have to make sure the bins get collected OK?...We're not going to the pub. We're not. STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT."
Then we go to the Goose, shame of shames.
this sounds brilliant
but I'm watching Morrissey. Everyone should go though!
the biggest thing is My Sad Captains
who i believe you've seen, so you're OK! Everyone else though....
I will if I am not at lucha libre
you always use that excuse
i did warn you
so i am doing so
and again
i think i've been quite restrained really.
I might as well use this bump - raffle prizes include!
day at royal ascot for 2
free pub lunch and drinks in london somewhere
a date with Brett
a haircut by an AVEDA hairdresser (and dinner if you want it)
a couple of other things (some nice scotch I think)
a 1.5L bottle of reef that is only 2 years past it's sell by date
Someone needs to come to this with me.
ok
Good work.
I'll meet you in a pub. We're all over that 1.5L bottle of Reef.
logically
the alcohol should have preserved the fruit juice. that's how these things work, right?
That's my understanding of the situation.
Whether we're regretting this understanding as we both simo-puke all over the table is another matter.
i don't understand what happened to it
it's just a bit curdled i think.
You just need to shake them
I'm sure.
also
i've just realised i can walk there from home. doubleplus win!
It's a fair walk, though, isn't it?
Quick when you're wankered, it's true :D
Actually not I guess
http://www.walkit.com/mywalk.php?rblstart=396480_434451&rblend=385080_429947&cid=100638&header1:txtfrom=N4+4AU&header1:txtto=Tufnell+Park&header1:txtcity=london&direct=0
There's a good pub near there called the old dairy or something I think.
who's brett?
Brett!
Brett Le Boeuf. Or something. he works for monumental records. or something similar. He's good value.
I do know who he is honestly!
i was talking to him on tuesday
Is there a lady equivalent of Brett?
there was gonna be
but Jenny decided not to. Shame, she's pretty hawt!
I'd go on a date with brettles. You totally should , he's a fucking awesome guy. I think you two would have some stories to trade.
cool
i'll come if someone could ensure i don't get lost in finsbury park.
also,
your band's not playing this anymore?
no :(
it would have been a bit hectic playing my first gig and setting up my first event. Plus jenny's been away for a coupla weeks. WHERE'S THE DEDICATION EH? we have a new song up though, as of last night.
It's easy peasy to find from finsury park, just walk straight up north (past Rowans bowling) from the tube station and keep going (past tescos (booooo) past woodies express (hoorayyyy) and it's on the corner at the end of the road). It has dark red walls. Alternatively it's next to Crouch hill station.
I am going to this
I love My Sad Captains
even more than I love refugees. I had planned to see Arnocorps, but as I don't have a ticket and it's sold out I might come to this instead.
Arnocorps :(
Some final info
it's gonna be a fiver in (£5), band times will be approximately
Jess - 8.30
WUTMT - 9.30
My Sad Captains - 10.30
or thereabouts, DJs the rest of the time except when I do the PRIZE RAFFLE and bar's open till 1am. It'll be great.
x
can i do the raffle?
i'm not going but can i?
GET BENT
the raffle is MINE.
you can have the reef if you want.
Whay aren't you coming eh?
i have business
to attend to.
hooray!
^bump
im not sure if we're going to make it anymore :(
but i really want to come!
You chumps.
Is it just going to be me on my own? SCREW YOU ALL.
i'm coming!
never fear. will try and be there for 8:30.
Supersmashinggreat.
Why would you not be there for 8.30? What could POSSIBLY stop you from being there earlier?
i think a few folks'll be there
Gaz (Drnovocal) said he probably will, bleak said she will (if she's not DYING), olegrich said he will.
Plus lots of sarah's friends are pretty hot.
I'll discuss your last sentence with you later.
I can't talk now, the Feds are watching me.
my new housemate called me a dark horse
in reference to my attractive female friends.
It's actually quite annoying :(
I'll be your wing man.
Get Sparky in
he'll do a much better job.
I might just follow you around
and try and catch some of the collateral
You will do no such thing Jacob
"Excuse me miss? Are you OK?"
"I...I don't know. One minute I was having a nice spritzer with my friends, the next there was a whirr of hair and cardigan, my friends are gone and I feel quite overcome..."
"I understand. Would you like a kebab?"
Oooh, this is near where i live
Big Red first then a quick 'yomp' to Finsbury Park?
we could even discuss the DiS cricket team
On that subject
I played cricket last night. My shoulder really hurts today.
how'd you do?
It was only nets
not a match or anything. After the post zonino cricket idea fell through I had to get my fix so persuaded my mate to go down the nets with me. He plays every Saturday for a team so he's getting a lot better while I'm still rubbish.
i know THAT feeling
but believe me, it's better than playing a random game, getting carted for 19 off your 2 overs, fielding at 3rd man and not getting a bat/ getting a 3 ball duck
i need some nets too. we should talk on this later.
I fear this will be me, two weeks today.
I'm not looking forward to it.
ach, a works do'll be fine
it's when your 'mate' asks if you want to 'play' for his 'regular' team.
' '
i'm coming
I like My Sad Captains.
Apparently I'm being taken to 'the nicest pub in the world' first, so I may be a while.
no worries
10.30 should give you loadsa leeway
It has a sign that says it and everything
the Richard Browne Nicest Pub Award
lucky folk.
You haven't explained to me why it is the nicest pub in the world at all! I do trust you, but what could make a drink establishment stand out that much, free booze aside? Obviously I will find out later :)
ha ha ha
I've just seen this.
See, I wasn't lying.
hi
i want to go to this, but for a reason that doesn't need to be gone into, i'm not sure i'm really up for it tonight. if i don't make it, i really hope it goes well :)
no problems man
a shame, but you do have a way to travel, even before other considerations. Hope everything's OK, see you at the next event!
*UPDATE*
Thanks tremendouslly to those who made it, we did better than I was expecting, but according to my maths we made more money than the (very drunken) count up at the end of the evening. Or maybe not. it was hard to tell due to the amount of locals who were allowed in for free.
Anyway. The count up came to £900, which was from entry fee and the raffle, for which we sold about 1200 tickets. We got ourselves a 4th band which was cool, and all the bands were excellent.
I was glad to see that reef go to a good home.
The funniest DiS related moment was probably the raffle, where the 3rd ticket came out with the name 'Bambos' scrawled on the back. I called out for Bambos, with bamos (of DiS) in the front row looking semi expectant. He inquires.
It's not his ticket, although the winning ticket is only 3 numbers away from Tom_from_spark's tickets, so it could be that Bamos has lost his. Meanwhile, a middle aged spanish guy has pushed his way through the crowd, 'I'm Mr Bambos' he cries, he has the correct ticket.
He chooes his prize, I pull the next ticket. the name scrawled on the back is.... bamos. Unbelievable. Cue more confusion and laughter, until bamos picks his prize of A1 racing tickets at silverstone.
Mr Bambos.
But yeah, thanks for helping contribute to undoubtedly one of my favourite nights in one of my favourite weekends ever. I'll give a final score on the money front when i know it.
xx
I just accidentally abandoned a massive reply. Balls.
Anyway. Congratulations man, nearly a grand is a decent amount, isn't it? Great stuff.
My highlights:
Obviously Mr Bambos. My favourite moment of ever, I think.
Those shots of two year-old compost-like Reef.
Sparky's impromptu toplessness.
My Sad Captains being ace.
Introducing myself to a Spanish man as 'bamos'. The look of utter confusion on his face was incredible. 'Did you just say you're called...go?'
Boring JohnM to death on the bus on the way home.
I think it's a good amount
it's just that I did a quick tot up (raffle tickets at 5 for £2 should about £500, which leaves only 80 people through the door at £5, and then we had donations on top, which I'm sure was about £100 judging by coins and notes in the jar...)
anyway. I thought we'd make 6-700, so i'm very pleased. And it was a brilliant night too, and hopefully a few more folks know about what they do at the Refugee Council. They need the support at the moment :(
Oh yeah, the other highlight was Peter (18 yeard old from Eritrea, lovely guy, but dresses a bit rude boyish) winning the days racing in the VIP part of Cheltenham race court. Man is he gonna get some looks...
*course
Cheltenham race COURSE. Talk about freudian.
I remember you telling me about him.
I hope he drips himself in chains and brings some much-needed ghetto glamour to the place. It's about time Cheltenham hit the 21st century.
he's going with sarah's dad
who is also lovely, but from the complete oppostie end of the social spectrum. he said he'll take as many as want to go, I am so trying to get onto that gravy train. I might even go in fancy dress.
big congrats jake
so glad to hear it went well & sorry again that i couldn't make it.
good to see you saturday though, and apologies for disappearing!
no worries!
twas indeed good to say hello again, it was a good chilled gathering. I really couldn't have taken much more than that on saturday.
Enjoy supersonic. ATPeeeeeeeeeee!
I was wondering where you were
I was going to shout at you about how good my teeth are.
you lost.
and i'm usually about.
how's the costume? i may make the effort to go find your thread about it...
oh wait
you meant on saturday.
i was sick :(
Well done!!!
Thats a great amount.
Highlights:
Sparkys shirt
Sliding on my knees
the 'bambos' incident
2 year old reef
Sarah telling me 'I'm really glad you didn't put that tequila in your eye'
my sad captains were ACE
i had a fun evening. well done! x
I was a bit worried by the amount of chat when MSC played
and the sound wasn't the best, but they didn't seem to mind too much. I couldn't watch the whole set, but if it sounded good to you lot it was probably good. That's a relief.
also
I will find out cricket stuff this week, hopefully this afternoon. A nets session will be awesome. probably be norf lahndon thouhg, sorry bambos.
Misser Bambos don't mind norf lahndan.
Happy memories of raffle win for me, my friend.
are you going to touch base?
I hate myself
Cool
Make sure you 'touch base' with me about this.
seriously, i've got piano wire in my pocket
MINOR UPDATE
I have just found out the £900 was after we paid the sound guy and a couple of band taxi fares, so we actually took....
£1150 total! (leading to £900 profit, of which £100 went to Esther's charity, who was the girl who organised the last Social 4 Social 3 years ago but died very soon afterwards)
Thanks once again. Blown away.
