The Lost Beck Masterpieces

Just a shout out for some overlooked greatness.

I was shocked to find that "Stereopathetic Soul Manure" and "One Foot In The Grave" are not even listed in Beck's wikipage dicography. SSM is a delightful mash-up of punk, rock, electronic, antropological blurbs and delta blues. It has been largely either ignored or panned over the years but I think it is a prize collection of lo-fi nuggets, including the blustery punk smasher "Pink Noise (rock me Amedeus), "Row Boat", "Today Has Been A Fucked Up Day", "Aephid Manure Hiest", "Cut In Half Blues", "Satan Gave Me A Taco", "Ozzy" and a fifteen + minute hidden track of annoying electronic called "Bonus Noise" -utter brilliance

"One Foot In The Grave" = the best Delta Blues record since Robert Johnson died but as written by a little white dude w/ his weird white buddies sitting in. - a classic must have for any Beck fan.

"Mellow Gold" = "Pure Gold" and I still don't think he's topped this in my mind although most subsequent releases are masterful. Mellow Gold is like the most amazing bowl of musical chile imaginable- it's all in there.

Yo, Beck fans!

these three=Buy Or Die!

: )

  • Mellow Gold is deffinatly not forgotten

Loser is his most played song by far

    • Loser yes but what about "Beercan"

or "Pay No Mind (snoozer)" , "Truck Drivin Nieghbours Downstairs (yellow sweat)" and "Nightmare Hippiegirl" and my fav:

      "Blackhole"!?

      • when i get access to a proper studio

I'm gonna do a cover of Blackhole with a childrens choir.

        • 'Soul Sucking Jerk' and 'Mutherfucker' make that LP for me

Mellow Gold is up there for me with Odelay for Beck's finest work

          • love the vocal effects on "soul sucking jerk"

            : )

        • man, that sounds perfect

are you going for angelic (vienna boys choir) or snotty schoolbrat (the wall) sound?

you could go either way on blackhole

  • looks as though they are gonna stay lost

    : (

    idiots rule!

  • one foot in the grave is the best beck album

    true story!

    • ^5

      sweet innit

      • I absolutely adore

        One Foot in the Grave

Every song on there = winner

        esp "Asshole"

        • what's the one where "cigarette were smokin by themselves"?

I love the halloweeness of that.

Yeah, "asshole" is my favorite too.

          • sorry, gotta go to work now

I'm in a family biz but my Sisters are not above firing my ass.

            • One Foot in the Grave...

Every song is not a winner...its got some god awful shit on there. but i do agree with Asshole. That is an amazing tune! hes got plenty good b-sides.
anyone here heard MEXICO, FUME or BOYZ. all fukin brilliant.

          • That's Asshole

Haven't listened to One Foot In The Grave but it has got some brilliant tracks on there. Burnt Orange Peel is my favourite.

            • I used to no the chords to asshole

damn, I just tried to work em out but can't- it's fun to play and sing tho.

              • this

                C - E - A

Your brains went black ... etc

                F

                She'll do anything...

                E

                She'll do anything

                A

She'll do anything to make you

                C

                Feel like an asshole

                repeat

                • try em for e

and the c shape where low e is fretted at 3rd fret.

that's it- and your chorus is rrright.

  • I've

got a signed copy of his 'Western Harvest Field By Moonlight' 10" only album. It's second pressing though so I don't have the Beck finger painting sadly. The collabs with That Dog are ace.

I also really love the 'Banjo Story' demo tape that you can pick up fairly easily online. It's incredibly raw and recorded predominately in his kitchen when be was 17 but it's got some great tracks on it. I particularly like the track where he goes to the other side of the room to get some hollow sounding foot stamps on the record but then forgets he needs to sing the next verse and you can hear him running back to the microphone to sing, slightly out of breath. Musically they're very similar to the early Daniel Johnson recordings.

    • cool stuff

      now we're talkin lost masterpieces!

      I'll look out for them

      • You can PM me if you

like and I'll shoot you some over. I've got quite a back catalouge of rare beck stuff. You can't buy those tapes so I don't mind uploading you them.

        • I'll take you up on that

Have you got the single that's got "Corvette Bummer" on it? At that "birthday" gig as we were walking to the venue, discussing the songs we hoped he'd play; I said "Corvette Bummer" and Bam- First Song!

          • yeah

I'll try and put a list of all the stuff I have together for you.

  • I had "Stereo pathetic soul manure"

I can't remember much about it though.

I had it on tape and then lost it.

  • Midnite Vultures is his best album imo.

    • get Soul Manure on cd- it's the wonderkind uncorked

midnite vulters my fav since mellow gold.

  • you'll find

that they're even less well known in the UK because they've always been import-only releases so hideously expensive to buy here.

    • bummer hank

if you need a stateside buyer let me know.

    • Na-ahhh

I got them from caiman and they were so cheap (through being undersold) i thought they were singles. <3 Beck

  • didn't johnny cash do a cover of rowboat

on one of those later albums of his?

i totally agree with you that manure and grave are massively underappreciated, but it at least shows you someone was paying attention.

love 'i get lonesome', was for ages the only song i could play on guitar. not really saying much, i know..

    • Beck and Johnny Cash went on tour together once

Johnny thought Beck was kind of weird when they first met and then became a fan after watching Beck perform from the wings "Hey, he's pretty good'".

  • oh yeah

bin trying to get a hold of
One foot in The Grave for years

hmm, although now that i of course have internet, I could probably solve that...
