It's out in a few weeks, any suggestions for what should and/or what will get shortlisted this year? Has to be better than last year's shortlist with any luck...

Last Shadow Puppets

i reckon.

they'll win

enough discussion

Please no,

If they win, I'll have lost all faith in music (well, almost. Actually, I won't have, I'd just think "that's fucked".)

fuck buttons!

yeah?

Are they even british?

Even if they are it seems unlikely.

My bets are on:

Mystery Jets
Radiohead
Last Shadow Puppets
Duffy
Foals
Random Jazz Act
Random World Music Act
Guillemots
Elbow

If Guillemots get on

I'll be really surprised, their second album is nowhere near as good as their debut (and I loved Through the Windowpane)

Red isn't as good sure.

But it's pop with avant garde and world music influences which the judges for this kind of thing will love.

foals i'd imagine

duffy as well I bet

I wonder which 'token world music' album they'll include

t'Futureheads

Calvin Harris? Or was that the year before?
Viva the shitting Vida

Brett Anderson.

Not that it matters in the grand scheme of anything

But if Coldplay get nominated, I'm going to stab somebody

Make it a member of coldplay

or at a push the Mercury committee, otherwise this is crushingly unfair.

I'm hoping Elbow

get shortlisted, but they probably won't. Frightened Rabbit would be a good one too.

I imagine MIA is a good bet for the shortlist.

In Rainbows

Maybe?

^^

5 they love all that innovation shit.

frightened rabbit i hope

foals and british sea power will definitely be on.

frightened rabbit...

...can't see it myself. HOpeful though.

frightened rabbit

are incredible. they deserve it!

Kate fucking Nash no doubt

Not that it matters, she'll just join the other shit on the shortlist.

Fuck Buttons haven't got a hope, they're not major label affiliated!

never used to make a difference

re major labels. not sure 100% if it still does? find me a completely major list.

Whether FB get nominated or not kinda depends on whether ATP stumped up for nominating them! And then if the panel like it...

Oh god

yeah Kate Nash's album could get in, what a horrible thought.

Never a only major label list

because they have to include the token jazz. folk and classical acts, but the a majority of the list is major label fun times!

Foals will be a good bet.

Oh god

If that pile of horseshit masquerading as music gets on the shortlist I'll explode!

British Sea Power

totes. Bet they pick both Duffy and Adele too.

I think one of them

for definite, but not both.

I'd say Duffy

is more likely at the moment.

Los Campesinos might get in.

I wondered about LC!

but I suspect they divide highbrow critical opinion a little too much.

Lightspeed Champion?

Youthmovies

If we're talking about originality and brilliance, then it should be a shoe in. Nothing else comes close this year.

This:

1. Charlottefield - What Are Friends For
2. Aidan John Moffat - I Can Hear You Heart
3. D_Rradio - S/T
4. Last Harbour - Dead Fires And The Lonely Spark
5. Sian Alice Group - 59.59
6. The Shortwave Set - Replica Sun Machine
7. Errors - It's Not Something But It Is Like Whatever
8. The Sleeping Years - We're Becoming Islands One By One
9. The Accidental - There Were Wolves
10. Ruth Theodore - Worm Food
11. Cowtown - Pine Cone Express
12. Keyboard Choir - Mizen Head To Gascanane Sound

should be the shortlist, but it probably isn't

D_Rradio would be great

as would Errors. Dream world though unfortunately.

charlottefield is definately a long, long shot!

but that would make me hapy.

vampire weekend comes to mind, dont you think? even though i despise them

Vampire Weekend winning a best UK album award

would be quite something.

Vampire Weekend are british?

That's news to me!

i must admit to assuming that

im not sure either

Nope

NYC I think, they all came from some Ivy League university apparently.

the sleeping years

would be a really good one to be on it, again probably wont get on it due to it not being on a massive label

when was that plant/krause thing

released?

That'll be in.

Yeah

I was about to say would it be eligible but they shortlisted the first Isobel Campbell/Mark Lanegan record, so I guess it's feasible.

would be nice....

if any of thse made it onto the list, especially Edwyn:

The Accidental - There Were Wolves
Kevin Ayers - The Unfairground
Edwyn Collins - Home Again
Richard Hawley - Ladys Bridge

Edwyns not a bad bet I reckon

They seem to usually have a token "lder statesman" of British rock on there as wellas the obvious token 'urban'/world ones. See: Scritti Politti last year.

...

Some bullshit. And Radiohead.

so...

some bullshit then....

What about the Plant and Krauss record

if that was this year then it's a dead cert I'd say. Everyone loves that album (apart from me).

It's eligible for this year

and it's awful.

my prediction:

Foals
Ting Tings
Burial
Duffy
Radiohead
Last Shadow Puppets
Adele
Laura Marling
Mystery Jets
Benga
Elbow
Lightspeed Champion

Burial or Radiohead to win.

^ This

makes me want to vomit

Ugh, please not the Ting Tings

or any of that aside from Radiohead and Elbow, but the Ting Tings are so horrifically stupendously awful and trashynotinagoodway. Did I hear right that they're number 1? Urgh.

...

Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial Burial

They'll be looking for

a token Reggae, Folk and Rap album of course ...

i reckon

Richard Hawley
Foals
Duffy
Last Shadow Puppets
Wiley
Elbow
Radiohead
Lightspeed Champion

Portishead

Hot Chip
Kate Nash
Radiohead?

^^

Hot Chip.
good call.

More I listen to Made in the Dark

the more I love it.

did they play

Out At The Pictures at Glastonbury? anyone? I saw them play it at Coachella but missed the start of their Glasto set, an amazing tune.

Right

I'd say any (or most) of the following are very likely:

Radiohead
Duffy
Portishead (why did I not think of this to start with, they're probably the most inevitable)
Burial
Foals
Robert Plant/Alison Krauss

If The Tings Tings or Kate Nash get anywhere near the award I'll weep copiously.

Maybe...

Johnny Flynn (as the folksie entry)

fingers crossed for this

listening to it right now

Foals

Johnny Flynn
Skream or Benga
Radiohead
Portishead
Adele or Duffy
Last Shadow Puppets (unfortunately)
Mystery Jets
Can't think of a heavier rock entry, possibly Biffy? Maaaaaaybe FOTL?

I reckon

Burial
Portishead
Mystery Jets
Foals
Radiohead

django bates

for the token jazzz choice.
i really wouldnt be that surprised if someone quite dull - duffy - might win....

can we all agree

this last year's been a much better 12 month spell for British music than the 12 months previously?

Radiohead or Burial will win it IMO. They'll either give it to Radiohead for the whole shakin'-up-the-industry thing ("and that's not all they did, they also released a great record!". Or Burial for being a dubstep breakthrough (much like Boy In Da Corner was for Dizzee and grime, and that also won the MMP)

If Burial gets nominated,

will he finally reveal his identity?

Benga's a good shout

Vampire Weekend maybe?

Vampire Weekend...

I would love them to win!

VAMPIRE WEEKEND ARE NOT BRITISH!

Not even in a vague Anthony and the Johnsons style!

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend

I suspect that

The Imagined Village will fill the folk spot. And might even win.

Santogold?

is she not english?

Philadelphia

Ooh, good shout

I do think BSP are fairly nailed on for a nomination - critically acclaimed, huge production job, album chart success but not enough to take them into the media mainstream.

i was gonna say that too

i doubt it'll win but it's worthy of recognition

I'll agree

that if they have half a brain in picking the shortlist it'll be miles better than last year's - there's certainly a lot more to choose from since last July than there was between July 2006-July 2007. Last year the only two UK albums I could think of in that period that I liked a lot were Patrick Wolf and The Twilight Sad, and sure enough both were ignored by the Mercury.

Pete & the Pirates..

..debut might sneak onto the list and I wouldn't mind that at all..

Guessing

Last Shadow Puppets
Foals
Radiohead
Elbow
*Token Jazz ft. Seb Rochford*
Burial
Frightened Rabbit
Jonquil
Santogold

I actually have more British cds I've liked this time

Misophone
Sons Of Noel And Adrian
Adem
Chris T-T
Elbow
Jonquil
Paris Motel
Misty's Big Adventure

Although, of those, probably only Elbow have a chance of being mentioned.

If I was a small band/label, I'm not sure I'd even bother stumping up the money to be in with a chance for the Mercury Prize though. It'd be a great boost for sales obviously, but it's been ages since there's really been anything on the list I've liked.

Robert Wyatt?

or was that last year? Better than Cuckooland and that got nominated. Is he a bit too 'token eccentric' (see also. Antony and the Johnsons) to be up twice?

School Of Language.

Please.

^^

Seconded

pulse

Radiohead
Duffy
Foals
Sigur Ros
Elbow
...Holy Fuck? haha.

Burial would be awesome

and thoroughly deserved.
But I doubt they'll pick him because of the anonymity issue.

I guess

they'd shortlist him and then just not pick him as the winner.

In Rainbows or Burial to win!!!

Portishead
Mystery Jets
Radioehad
Elbow
Burial
M.I.A
Hot Chip
Coldplay
Laura Marling
Holy Fuck
Simian Mobile Disco was that too early 2007?
long blondes maybe
futureheads maybe

Hopefully,

In Rainbows will get nominated and triumph, though I fear that the judges will go with the art school kids like last year and hand it to band such as Foals.

You

do realise Foals are art school kids, and you can't really good much 'arty' in music than Radiohead. Douche.

*are not

*cough* I'm saying this because Foals are so easily be people just because they are popular, when this in no way represents there music.

Yeahhhh, anyways.

^^

argh I can't type, *embarrassed*, I meant to say:

I'm saying this because Foals are so criticised easily by people just because they are popular, when this in no way represents there music.

^^

what an idiot this guy is.

Wild Beasts

I reckon they're definitely in their in the slot that was filled by Bat For Lashes last year.

^^

yes, definitely, there album is wonderful :)

James Blackshaw?

Litany of Echoes is so good.
