why do people wear band t-shirts?

Is it because we're incapable of getting across our feelings for bands to people by using the tried and tested method of speech? Is it to make people think we're interesting? Is it no different to wearing any normal brand of clothes? Is it just because they look pretty sometimes? I think i do it to cut out smalltalk. I certainly don't think most are good value or particularly well made. They makes me approachable to people with similar interests and eliminate the need for everyday conversation when meeting them. I'm reading too much into this aren't i?

I do it because

I got really drunk and bought a shirt at a gig where the band was playing, and I want to get some worth out of my purchase.

is that where we went wrong?

giving you a free t-shirt meant a lack of respect for the t-shirt so you went and lost the t-shirt? :(

Haha :)

I didn't lose it. It was stolen. Honest.

dunno

I don't know what to think. I've got a xiu xiu one and a mars volta one, but thats cuz they've got freddie mercury's head and a golden head on them, respectively. I like head.

oh and it's good if you've got no dress sense

then your attire is at least grounded in some semblance of relevance.

who knows why anybody does anything

we live in a strange world.

they make finding people with similar tastes easier

they're often printed on lovely american apparel.
they look cool.

I do it because

-it's a potential way of making friends.
-the designs are often pretty.
-i don't like most other t-shirt 'styles' I guess.

ps. I have about 150 band tees.

I have a lot of shit personality to make up for.

my god

i have 2!

HAI STRANGER

I LIEK THIS BAND, IF YOU DO TOO, YOU MIGHT LIEK ME

also, it can be a step up from a random mish-mash of patterns, or nothing, and thus is visually appealing.

i only buy band shirts

if they're actually nice shirts... you knowz it.

In the hope someone will talk to me

and say 'You have good taste in music. Let us be best friends forever'

This will never happen the other way round though.

you probably have a good point

it is used as a way of expressing one's identity and all that bollocks. i think i wear them because if i love a band a lot i will just treasure whatever merch/effects i've got and want to wear it all the time.

I really really wanted to wear

my Half Man Half Biscuit T-shirt to Z3.5

but for some reason didn't.

*sigh*

I rarely buy band tshitrs

but if I do it's generaly because I like the design as well as the band. I want a 'goo' t-shirt because I love Raymond Pettibons drawings.

i do because

i like the designs on them. like, i won't wear a t shirt that just has the band name or whatever, i like interesting drawings and artwork on them.

Yup

I hate shirts with just the band name on, they have to have nice artwork.

I suppose they're good at weeding out cunts

If I spotted someone wearing a 'Boris' t-shirt for example, I'd know instantly that they weren't my type of person, and thus I wouldn't have to bother with them at all.

I don't think I could be friends

with someone who liked that sort of music. Anything else is acceptable - liking heavy metal, being a Col U fan, thinking Catherine Tate was funny, wearing coloured jeans etc, but only two things would stop me from being friends with someone - liking music like Boris, and having any of your personality traits.

erm what????

(forgive me if this is a joke post - irony doesn't always cut it on the internets)

Why are you singling Boris out for this bile? Eh? I'm especially baffled as they have two distinct modes of music - stoner rock style and drone style. Do you have a particular problem with one of these or both or what???

i'm sure you'll cover his up as being a joke

but clearly you meant nothing by your appology the oter week, and you are just as big an utter fucking cock sucking naive self absorbed wanker as you ever were.

It can be good for small talk

I once got a girl's number after she liked my white sonic youth 'goo' tshirt. Girls seem to like that one.

Coincidentally

I pulled in a club once because I was wearing that same SY t-shirt and we got talking about Raymond Pettibon. So thanks blowjob and fairly brief clumsy sex, Raymond.

* for the

fucking hell I can't form sentences today

all I got from that was that

you gave some bloke called Ray a blowjob.

to make me look reasonably interesting

(at least to a certain type of person, I guess) so they might feel compelled to come and talk to me. Although I do like the look of the ones I wear and they're reasonably cheap, which helps.

because a lot of time

they have cool designs on. I'm wearing a rolo tomassi one just now that has a drawing of a cat with loads of birds coming out of a hole on the cats back. pretty awesome.

i also wear them in the hope that someone might be all liek: HAI OMG U LIKE ____ ME TOO LETS BE FRIENDS

I think I have that same Rolo Tomassi shirt

I'm a bit too tubby for it though

red and black on white, yeah?

mine is way too big for me, but it's too awesome not to wear :)

that's the one

I have about three of their shirts, yet none of them fit me quite right. I'm not into displaying my midriff in public so they're confined to the wardrobe. They do look really good though which is irritating.

that is the problem with band tshirts

they look good, but they never fit right. It's probably cause all the 'girls' sizes are actually 'youth' sizes, which means they are all the wrong shape.
Which is why i've resorted to just buying ones that are massively too big, they still manage to look OK.

^ this!

you have photos from glasdis?

where from? :O

there's only a few

one of them is you!

do you want to see it?

:S

i'm not sure, do i? :D

haha

well, it was that moment where you downed a bottle of whiskey then danced on the table topless.

so i dunno, do you? :D

in that case:

definitely ;)

:D

you might've changed your t-shirt :)

well

i only buy band t-shirts with really nice, interesting designs, not just something with the name written across the middle.

and i like to show off my amazing music tastes, and on dress down friday at work people in the office go "who the fuck are Pissed Jeans/Copy Haho/Johnny Foreigner" etc

most of the band txshirts i have you wouldn't be able to tell are band tshirts

I buy them because of the designs and if i'm particularly obsessive about a band just to support them.

I only have about 4 that I wear though

stripey and block colours forevers

because i like explaining to my grandparents who 65daysofstatic are

every time i see them.

Also its a good way of supporting a band you like as its a) free advertising for them, and a lot of the time people will ask you what your tshirt is about so you can tell them about this awesome band... and b) bands make some money from merch sales, right? i have no idea what kind of mark-up is involved but again, i like to make sure bands i like can eat and stuff!

i only buy them if i like the design

but i have a lot. i wear them so that people can identify me as someone who is part of their SUBCULTURE. and to make boys talk to me.

uh cos i like them?

cos i want to support the band by buying their merch?

i don't

but only because t-shirts do not suit me, at all. i wish band t-shirts came in more styles than just 't-shirt'. like, i don't know, band dresses. or something.

no waaaay

my new why? t-shirt looks totally swell with a high waisted skirt. work it in with your style!

Is it the light blue one?

I have the light blue one, it's sexy.

it's the high necks

high necks don't work for me :(

get creative then

it is not physically impossible to change the appearance of a t-shirt.

but that involves

EFFORT.

because all my other clothes are in the wash.

and yes, i'm incapable of getting my feelings across using the tried and tested method of speach. you win.

they look pretty and they're usually good quality too, i'm wearing the same ¡forward, russia! tshirt i'm wearing in my profile picture, and that was taken over a year ago.

other tshirts just don't compare.

It's either the band tee

Or naked. I'm a lazy clothes buyer. They never fit right tho...

Is that Lawrence in the snow on your profile KssinKs? I miss Lawrence...

good point

moreover, why arent all clothes made by record companies?

they look nice/ feel nice

thats what it is for me.

also the obvious

duuuuhhhh

I used to wear

them before I discovered how rubbish music was (I still do if I have few clothes left). Largely because they required little thought.

Now, in a similar line of wearing stuff, I tend to just wear shirts and dark jeans. I really can't be arsed making any effort beyond that.

because if i buy a band t-shirt at a show i've paid to get into

it absolves me of the need to buy their records rather than just downloading them as i'm supporting the artists directly and not their evil record labels AM I RITE GUYZ?

yeah!

so much

People in band t-shirts tend to annoy me

It's sort of like saying it's the most interesting thing about you, and how you define yourself. I don't know, I suppose I always see it as being almost confrontational. I'm not so sure if that makes sense, mind.

I said I'm not so sure it makes sense

But I still feel that way most of the time. I just kind of think "...so what?" whenever I see them. In fact, I'm sure it doesn't make sense. But sense or no, it irritates me.

you're right

it doesn't make sense.

but you could say that people are defined by any item of clothing they wear..

i dont think that this is specific to band t shirts

Not really

Certainly not to the same extent with most other clothes. I wear lots of different things, none of which are 'making a statement' or defining me in any way. I always see it as a kind of stand-out / look-at-me attempt. I don't know...

your clothes dont have to stand out as a brash statement to define you

and in a way you have kind of proven the point i was making - you probably don't wear clothes that make a statement, command attention or could be percieved as 'look-at-me' or 'stand-out' because you are not an attention-seeking person who feels like they have to make a statement with clothes. so your clothes have defined you.

but thats just an assumption of course! :)

theyre good conversation starters

and most of mine are pretty.

I've got loads

apart from that plain t shirts....some bands have nice logos.

but I've realised that a lot of people are cynical about these things nowadays.

the only semi clean tee i had yesterday was a dk one...but i covered it up in a hoodie in case i looked liek aposer..but i hyperventilated.

Because i like the bands a lot

and i like the way they look, and i like supporting bands i like by buying their t shirts and stuff. And its nice when someone says nice t shirt and you can feel part of a smug little club, it also helps identify is someone has similar interests.
And i just like to show off that i like fairly obscure straightedge hardcore bands.

why do people wear football shirts?

same logic i guess.

you think too much

but for me there is two pieces of thinking beyond my purchase of a band t-shirt 1) do i like the band? 2) will the t-shirt suit me?
i take it for granted that i'll buy clothes that fit me
