Beck's live performance...

I remember going to see beck a few years back and it was one of the most animated stage shows i'd ever seen. It was almost like you would have to pay him to keep him still. A truly amazing performance.

Lately every time i see him on the TV or like on Friday when i saw him at wireless he just kinda stands there looking moody and doesnt do much anymore. I don't know if it's because he has nothing to prove now, but i was just a little dissappointed.

Anyone else agree/see what i'm saying?

Musically i still think he is ace.

  • He's a Scientlogist.

    Does that answer your question?

    • Manchester...

.was so disapointing. I completely agree, first time was immense!

Second time was turgid garage rock, ESPECIALLY Lost Cause which was the worst thing ever, it doesnt work as some wack rock anthem at all!

  • I seen him support Radiohead in Dublin

about 2 years ago, and his performance was superb. He even had a puppet show going.

I'd definitely go see him again.

  • Maybe he's getting old and feeling it

When i saw him live, Brainiac supported. It was amazing.

  • completely agree

it was depressing - i've seen him so great so many times that it made me sad to see him so lacklustre. i thought he actually looked genuinely unhappy. Really sad.

  • Shoegazing now it seems.

I agree it is lacking but he still has the presence somehow.

  • at wireless on friday

he was so traumatically bad. i had to walk away. so lacklustre dull and boring. tragic really when you compare to hwta a performer he has been in past.

  • I mean, his songs are awesome, but years ago he used to OWN the stage, diving around and putting on

Now i agree he still has a presence because he is a cool guy, but just not what he used to be... :(

    • Maybe he saw Prince

last summer and realises there's no longer any point trying to out do the purple one.

And he's a Scientologist. Maybe they have some rule about having fun.

  • It was really strange at Wireless

I've seen him twice- 2006 at V and he was as animated as any frontman, the puppets were hilarious, the whole band seemed to be having a good time.

At Wireless last week he was stationary, his guitar and bass player looked like they'd been brought in especially from the 1990's and every song sounded the same.

  • do you think

he's doing that thing that Ryan Adams does where he's purposefully terrible live (after such triumphant past performances) so his label/management will stop making him tour for fear of more shitty reviews?

Please could somebody invent a time machine so Ryan Adams remains in January 2002 forever more? Thank you.

And the best live era for Beck would be....?

    • I saw him at Rock City in about 1995

he was absolutely incredible, not seen him since but can't imagine he could top that performance

  • He went down at Wireless...

As well as the Four Tops would at a BNP rally.

  • He's 39, he's probably knackered.

I saw him recently and it sounded great- more of a raw rock sound, and some of the re-worked versions of 'Sea Change' songs were wonderful.

I do miss the Beck who used to maniacally leap around the stage a few years back though.
