If you like Sonic Youth-esque screeching, off-key madness, go for the early albums.
If you like more polished, solid, synthy stuff, go for 23 or Misery Is A Butterfly.
Personally I'd recommend 23, I think it's a masterpiece. I do like the early stuff too though, I'd recommend either La Mia or Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons.
Don't be put off if you don't like the early or late stuff, give both a chance, they've changed quite a lot.
depeche mode/portishead phase. i'd say the intersection of their old and new style was around the time of the damaged lemons album, so you may want to start with that one.
Well, except I think I have an ep in a foreign language (though I might be confusing with Yo La Tengo) but otherwise every BR album I have is solid. Also, good live band.
of a certain damaged lemon is rad... so are all the ones before, really like the s/t and "fake can be just as good". not of fan of 23 though, it's polished and quite boring actually, saw them live for the 23 tour and was really disappointed...
album ?
My favourite is 'la mia vita violenta'.
Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons
Misery Is A Butterfly
Depends what you like

That's true
Damaged Lemons is a bit of a mix, would be a good place to start and then choose which way you want to go depending on which tracks you prefer.
totally agree
with ye there pal
23 or Misery Is A Butterfly
for me.

Not enough appreciation for this
I don't think there's a "wrong" way to start

foreign ep
that's probably 'melodie citronique' - mostly remakes of damaged lemons tracks with foreign lyrics.
misery is a butterfly is probably my favourite, though any of their last 4 are strong contenders.
I really like 23
but La Mia Vita Violenta has its moments too.
Most of their albums are actually very good.
