Hello all!

I'm in a band and we're gonna release our first single on vinyl in October but we also really want it to be available on itunes, we wanna bite of the apple aye!

Having nil experience of the process is there anyone out there that can advise on how you get your music on itunes when you are unsigned and doing it all off ya own back. I've read loads on the net all going on about UPC codes, ISRC Codes, needing a distribution company to work on our behalf as Apple won't deal direct etc. It's proving a bigger task than I thought but we still wanna do it.

Has anyone done this? any horror stories or stories of joy would be appreciated cheers!!!

A friend's band recently got on iTunes,

from what I gathered, it isn't easy and isn't a case of being in a band, making some songs and putting them on iTune. They (friend's band) needed a distribution company and also had to prove that they had selling potential! (don't ask, I'm not sure myself) but they had to prove they would sell their music etc.

I'll get in contact with them and up-date you with how they did it. I'm a bit sketchy with the details at the mo!

Go here...

www.tunecore.com

You pay 99 cents and they do it all for you.

Fizzy

it really isn't that difficult...see my post below.

i'm in a similar position

there are some big places like the orchard an that but, having spoken to them in the last two weeks, they've grown quite a lot over the last year and aren't taking on as many smaller acts.

two places i've been recommended are:

http://awal.com/
http://cdbaby.net/

so far the latter have been really good with emails and answering questions etc. awal, at this point haven't replied to anything i've said over the course of two weeks.

either way, they're at least worth looking at and seeing if they fit your needs etc.

hope this helps in some way.

CDbaby

I've heard these are good, will look into nice one!

.

you only need IRSC codes etc if you are registered with PRS/MCPS - i.e. you are hoping to get royalties from your recordings from Radio play etc.

There are basically 2 options.

Submit your tracks to a company whom you pay a one off fee per track and they will put it on iTunes: e.g. http://www.tunecore.com

OR

Submit your music to a company like AWAL and they get your music in the iTunes store, and they take a percentage of each sale/download. http://awal.com/

I choose the latter.

Nice one

I'll look into all these recommendations cheers!

I Think...

I've just been sorting out digital reissues of some music I had released a while ago. I've been doing it this week so it's all still fresh in my mind.

Everyone recommended AWAL to me. Everything seems very straightforward with them. I have ISRC codes already (as these releases originally came out on CD) but I also needed to get some for self-releasing new music.

This involved a phone call to the PPL who provided me with the numbers which will allow me to generate my own ISRC codes.

I hope that is of some help.

I was told that ITunes needed ISRC codes to 'stock' your music. And I had to put them in the AWAL delivery form.

So, I'm unsure if you need them for AWAL, or not.

I hope this is of some help.

Cheers

Sounds promising, ta!
