Of course MBV are the pioneers of shoegaze and are pretty fucking great, but Slowdive just took it to another level. They got the pedals and made something much more ethereal much more dreamy and floaty. I just feel that whenever it comes to shoegaze and the like people start whipping their cocks out and spurt all over MBV as if they're the be all and end all. All you have to do is listen to 'Richard' or 'Machinegun' and that's it thats perfection. I don't think MBV ever got there.

anyway DiScuss!

I haven't heard much Slowdive so can't comment

but I'd be surprised if I liked them as much as a like MBV

if you decide to get off your ass!

don't head for Alison and shit. Listen to 'machine gun' then download the Souvlaki demo's - that's where the beef is. In fact just get it all and give it a good listen with an open mind.

I've never been more serious in my life

and I'm prepared to be gunned down with hate, but I ain't giving up easily!

yep

we can do this all night but it isn't going to change anything. Care to tell me why you think MBV's music is better than Slowdives?

i just think it's better than most bands

i'm not going to argue. just a brave statement to make. i don't mind slowdive at all, they're great

hmm

I love both. While I think that 'Machine Gun' is one of the most 'dreamy and floaty' songs I know, I also think it's easily matched by the likes of 'To Here Knows When' or 'Summer Wine'.

Likewise, while watching them play the extended version of Souvlaki Space Station for the thousandth time on YouTube makes me think "yeah, pretty good then", it's still matched by a load of MBV songs.

So, yeah... I lean towards disagreeing, but I definitely don't think it's incredibly crazy statement to make.

*an

the thing is when it comes to slowdive most

people have only heard souvlaki. Whereas with MBV people talk about the EP's and stuff. Such as you mentioning 'summer wine' (I think you ment 'strawberry wine'?). I think slowdives true genius lies in their demo's and if more people sought them out and heard them they'd *know*.

ffs

*mean

as much as i love MBV

i prefer Slowdive. I'm so with you on this one. Machine Gun is just beautiful, though i think i prefer the album Just For A Day more...i listened to it after an awfully heavy weekend a few months ago and really fell in love with it. Spanish Air, Catch the Breeze, Ballad of Sister Sue...ahh...gorgeous

^5

I'm with you on Just for a day topping Souvlaki aswell. Oh God I'm listening to 'Blue Skied an' Clear' (Pygmalion) and fucking hell THIS is why I love them! I could die happy listening to this song.

catch the breeze is amazing.

possibly the best slowdive song, but souvlaki is deffo their best album. the just for a day reissue is worth getting for the extra cd with all the early eps on it.

i really enjoyed the morr music tribute album also. the version of crazy for you by ulrich schnauss is great.

better than mbv? i couldn't say, i like both of them. one was the innovator but the other had some equally fantastic tunes.

Blue Skied An' Clear

Is one of my favourite songs ever.

As much as I adore MBV, I could simply never see them creating the aching, gentle beauty of that particular track.

I'm sorry

But My Bloody Valentine still takes the cake for me.

I just like the twangy-er sound that MBV has, plus Belinda's vocals.

Slowdive certainly comes close though.

agree w/the apple

i respect MBV, but Slowdive is a more enjoyable listen...Pygmalion being my favourite

as much as i love

Slowdive, Ride et al, they dont beat MBV for pure pop songs coats in walls of guitar.

This was a good one to bring up

I only know MBV, but thanks to this thread I am going to get hold of some Slowdive.

I got the souvlaki deluxe cd....

I didnt bother listening to the demo tracks, but thought the album was a bit shite.....especially 'souvlaki space station' which i read 'sees the band experimenting with ambient dub'

i agree

also, Ride>MBV?

RIDE

It's all about Ride, trust me. Ride could do both ends of 'shoegaze' - the dreamy and ethereal along with the noisey and psychedelic.

Having seen MBV at the Roundhouse though, I'd rate them above Ride.

Slowdive were underrated though, and the sounds they produced were quite beautiful.

pfff

MBV's rhythm section shits all over Slowdive's, making them on a different level entirely.

I have

the Slowdive "Catch The Breeze" 2cd anthology and love it; what should I check out next that isn't on this collection?

Even though they and MBV are both labelled as "shoegaze" I still find it very difficult to compare the two side-by-side. MBV are definitely more visceral that's for sure though.

Definitely not

While MBV's earliest recordings aren't great up to the 'A New Record By...' EP, everything they made thereafter was pretty much peerless.
Slowdive also made some exceptional records but not none of their albums share the same overall consistency throughout as either 'Isn't Anything' or 'Loveless' IMO.
As for Ride, again their first four EPs and 'Nowhere' are untouchable, but 'Going Blank Again' is patchy while 'Tarantula' and 'Carnival Light' are largely forgettable.

Hang on;

I normally agree with everything you say re:shoegaze but I disagree about Going Blank Again - for me, it's a brilliant record, not as good as Nowhere but then again, very few things are.

Also, MBV were excellent from the very beginning - This Is Your Bloody Valentine is stupidly criticised for copying stuff like The Cramps, even though it's better than The Cramps....

I thought GBA

was great at the time but for me it sounds dated nowadays whereas Nowhere is just timeless. I know many who disagree though so I guess I'm in the minority there!

I didn't think 'This Is....' copied anyone. I just don't think it's a very good record, from the production down to the actual quality of the songs themselves. 'No Place To Go' and 'The Sandman Never Sleeps' off 'Geek' are possible exceptions though from that era.
