Is it?

it was mediocre live.

I fell asleep

when listening it on the headphones earlier. Don't know if that says anything about the album, it was probably that I was just tired?

he was apparently shit

playing live recently, but I agree - Modern Guilt is amazing.

Anyone else think that one about a soul sounds like QOTSA and that Replica one sounds like it could be on In Rainbows.

Beck remains ace, even if he is a bit rubbish live.

yeah he was always a bit sit live

and probably because by all accounts he is a bit of a cunt

but this new reocrd has got me like he has utterly failed to on ALL records since Midnite Vultures.

Just straight up psyche nugggets with exquisite shards (yes, shards)of all (yes, all) other forms of music from 60s onward intot he future, floating in and out in a deceptively simple but of course super clever way, so it gets more and more sexy and engaging on each listen

can't hear a single, mind

or, for those that like these things, a single mind

but the kitchen sink is dialled down so low, that is has the melodies of sad beck, allied to the whatdoesthisbuttondo of party beck, all tied up

in a fat free bow

word to your mother

Pretty surprised the album's not had a more positive reception than it's got:

I'm very much of the view that this is one of the best things he's ever done: admittedly this is largely because the short running time stops him from bulking the thing out with obnoxious filler as he so often does, but it's still a really tight, focused record. Like thebigmusic said, there's no single on here, which might account for the subdued reaction, but it's still a great album - Volcano especiallly might be one of his best tracks yet.

I really like it

I prefer Beck's folky side - Sea Change is my favourite album of his - but I like Modern Guilt because I can indulge in this on a few tracks but I'm getting to appreciate the more electronica-bleepy-wtf element too. Um, yeah, and that.

I really want to like it

but I find it deathly dull

wish he'd make another album with nigel godrich at the helm

I've given it 5 spins

and have only found brief moments of excellence. Give me Odelay or Sea Change anyday.

YOU MAY HAVE THEM

CONSIDER THEM YOURS

I THINK ANYONE WITH ANY RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AT ALL IS AN UTTER MADMAN

BUT
BEING UTTERLY MENTAL IS A PLUS IN POP MUSIC , NO?
OR CAN BE

agreed

i love beck. that is all.

Where has all this pap

come from about him being shit live.

I saw him at Rock Werchter and he was one of the highlights of the weekend.

I think he played 3 or 4 songs from his new album and they were pretty great.

"beck has always been a bit shit live"

You were obviously not at his solo acoustic show at the Royal Albert Hall in 2003 - which to this day remains the best thing I have ever seen.

His gig at Wembley Arena in early 2000 is also right up there with the best.

I saw him at Wireless

and I thought he was pretty good live, said absolutely nothing to the crowd though. Guess that's what Scientology does to you...
The new album's alright, listened to it a couple times now. It's better than The Information methinks, that was way too long.

he's meant to be better for his own shows

than at festivals as far as crowd interaction goes

he was awesome when i saw him support radiohead, much more awesome than radiohead even

South Park?

I thought that was appalling..definitely the worst time I've seen him, each to their own I suppose.

But yeah, whoever said the Royal Albert Hall show was fantastic is correct, out of the 6 times i've seen him that was easily the best.

it was in edinburgh, idk what south park is

i also saw one of that acoustic tour he did which was equally great

South Park

was when he supported Radiohead in 2001..I'd forgotten he did the Edinburgh/V Festival shows with them as well!

sweet

yeah, I saw him in 03 and 06 and at Werchter a couple of weeks ago.

'03 was awesome, Odelay and Sea Change basically. '06 was great, they put on a proper show and it was entertaining.

Werchter was good, but Beck was a wee bit too stoned and messed up some vocals at first. But it didn't matter because Sunday Sun and Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes back to back was amazing.

I'm still not sure about this record but it sounds bloody good through headphones. The songs just aren't classic enough. Although Chemtrails is turning into a hot psychedelic summer anthem

Good but not great

It's a bit of a grower, though I don't think anywhere near as good as 'The Information'. Best song by a mile is 'Walls', which has the most lovely melody in the world.

i actually quite enjoyed this record!

its actually really listenable!

I've just downloaded it

although I haven't listened to it yet.

Im not expecting too much from it, I was quite let down by 'Chemtrails' as a lead single, but it is Beck, so im sure there is some interesting stuff on it.

Alot better than I expected it would be

Ok on first listen and got better and better the more I listened to it.

He's not a Jehova's witness

He's one of Travolta / Cruise's lot.

Scientology. You know - the one about UFOs.
