DiS gave two Muse albums a 10, and one a 9. This seems a bit ridiculous, does everyone here think they're THAT good? I surely don't, if you do tell me why maybe you can enlighten me. If you don't maybe you can further support my argument and make me feel good. :D
DiS Muse Reviews

it's the complete lack of soul that makes them so utterly shite
"lack of soul"
good way of putting it - an intelligent band with just absoloutley nothing to say.
I wouldn't say...
they're even particularly intelligent. It's like Queen if Queen were fronted by the human charisma vacuum that is Brian May, rather than a flamboyant homosexual.
But Brian May makes astronomy FUN
and he's not sexist or homophobic like Patrick Moore is.
He'd make a shit...
frontman of a stadium rock band, though, much like Matt "I'm going to replace charisma with WhAcKy stories about UFOs" Bellamy makes a shit frontman for a stadium rock band.
How many times have you made that joke?
I've Heard
people say Radiohead has no soul, so please define "soul. "
Well DiS reviews...
aren't a democracy, are they ?
It's not what the general consensus says, it's what the reviewer thinks.
errm, except for the review of Kid A.
Well
in a way a review has to say what everyone would say.
but in another way
it doesn't
well
it has be a good balance not a total bias.
Which albums got what score?
Origin of Symmetry was the album that got me into good music, so that's always getting a 10 from me. But I doubt they're gonna top that ever again. I've gone of them a bit recently anyways, mainly due to their over-exposure... cos I'm fickle like that.
*off
dammit
Muse are amazing
end of story
+1
...
I don't listen to them much now, if at all.
...but yeah, I reckon those scores still hold.
I think they're awful.
I appreciate their talent in terms of how well they can play their instruments, but the songs they write make me feel sick.
i dont really listen to muse much anymore
much like wrightylew i think theyre ridiculously talented for a 3 piece (yes yes sometimes a 4 peice but really a 3 piece) i just found that black holes and revelations got boring quickly from the amount of airtime its singles were given.also, he will never write a better riff or song than stockholm syndrome
4 piece? 3 piece?
nah, they're a one piece. it's the Matt Bellamy Show (tm).
Still love them. Black Holes...less so, but they have written some really excellent music in their time, and what they lack in personality when playing live, they more than make up for in musicianship and just general sheer awesomeness.
Weren't Muse
the first band that DiS really went for in a big way?
i hope this is true
i wasn't around back then
yep
actually pre-DiS, i reviewed their first demo and interviewed them just before the muscle museum ep came out, sat in the back room of the cavern in exeter.
dis launched in october 2000 and we were indeed championing them as one of our first debut album/new bands, we all really liked.
i really like muse
I can't decide with Muse
One minute I love them, next I think they are a pile of shite.
I think it may just be because they are so popular I have these feelings as I have stupidly become a twat.
To Me
I can compare Muse to a movie with alot of violence and special effects but in the end it has no plot, sorta like Dragon Ball Z. Or maybe a huge explosion, it's massive, beautiful and destructive at the same time but over in seconds leaving debris . Well, that's my personal opinion.
That makes sense
to me anyway, good analogy.
they'd be amongst the five worst bands i've ever heard.
^haha.
Pete Doherty: 9
but, its true
there not THAT good. but, maybe they don't take enough drugs.
they're
ergh. i'm a terrible person
From a reviewer point of view
I'd probably rate each album highly after a couple of listens as well.
But then that's it, can't say I've perservered with a Muse album longer than a 1-2 weeks. Just enjoyable musically then disposed of.
i thought Origin of Symmetry was great
The other albums are quite weak.
They are amazing live though. One of the best live bands i've ever seen infact.
I hoped they would have gone quite weird by now, be writing albums full of strange and dark songs like Megalomania and Screenager. Instead they're writing modern stadium rock albums, which i guess makes sense seeing as they can sell out Wembley. Maybe the next album, eh?
great band
Probably in hindsight yes they will be seen as "that good."
Much of their early character was brought out with mental live shows that you had to see to appreciate. Matt with stupid hair and runnig round like a div will always stick in my mind. They added a crazy heaviness to their wee indie sound that was quite hard to suss. Origin is a classic and Absolution isn't far behind. BH&R is good, but I think the dangerous element from them is going.
I don;t think many people would have thought that a band with a song like Stockholm Syndrome would end up as a daytime band.
Listen to some of the live songs before BH&R came out and you'll see what I mean. It was dark, broody and heavy. I think they knew they'd get big sales with the likes of Starlight, so they went for that.
Overrated
The best thing they ever recorded was the original 4-track demo on Dangerous Records. That version of 'Cave' is brilliant. Their studio albums suffer from Butch Vig-like knob twiddling jinx. I like to see them live in a smallish venue to see how they do - I don't reckon they warrant Wembley.
^indiest post of the day^
^second most unnecessary post of the day^
^ whatever
Nope
black_rooster's post is second most unecessary, my retort being the most unecessary.
^ whatever
^
There is a feature about them being the biggest band in the UK
but I can't find it. But it goes to show that DiS as a collective had probably already decided that they were going to heap the praise.
I like Muse a lot. They were one of the first bands that I truly loved that broke through. I am not so sure of their last one but the preceding 3 are all excellent.
I would give Origin of Symmetry 9
Absolution 7
Black Holes 4 or 5
Showbiz 5
So no, i don't agree with DiS
Showbiz 5?
:|
and not a mark more.
:(
Muse are like junk food
It tastes absolutely delicious at first, but after a while, it really starts to make you sick.
That's the best I can put it.
I used to adore their music a few years ago, but I got sick of it at some point between then and now.
they got me into good music
when showbiz came out. I absolutely love that record, and origin was brilliant, really good. I think they did go downhill after that, but if you were to make a muse best of then it would be amazing.
They were also great live when ive seen them
Muse
Origin of Symmetry and Absolution 10/10
Black Holes & Revelations 8/10
Showbiz 7/10
the band that got me into music properly and which most of my music taste has progressed from either directly or indirectly.
Matt Bellamy is one very talented musician and can write some great catchy songs aswell (T.I.R.O, Plug In Baby, Supermassive Black Hole). they dare to write what other bands wish they could, not worried about being stupidly over the top, they're unashamedly epic and this is why i love them.
the progressive riffs of OoS has stood the test of time, i can still play the album now and fall in love with many of the tracks all over again. i stand by my opinion that Absolution is one of the most inovative albums i've ever heard, it opened my eyes to what music can sound like, if i hadn't of bought Absolution i don't know if i'd love music as i do, i probably wouldn't even be posting on this website, simply life changing. probably the greatest concept album i've ever heard, it sends you on a journey to another world, sticks to it's bombastic space extravaganza yet still sounds so varied and skillfully performed.
Butterflies & Hurricanes sounds like the end of the world, if you close your eyes whilst listening to it you can almost convince yourself it's true, a truly astonishing track that deserves to go down in history as one of the best ever.
Showbiz had some great ideas but wasn't the as complete and Black Holes & Revelations doesn't quite capture the imagination of the "middle 2" but definitely had it's moments and at least they never try and make the same album twice. although if they ever make a song that sounds like Starlight again, i think i'll probably cry.
^ that was a bit of a mish-mash of random points
but i think you get the general idea.
and i also think they've done amazingly well to be so popular
considering the type of music they play isn't exactly geared towards the mainstream. it's not just BH&R either (obviously the most mainstream album they've written) they already had a huge fan base before that got released.
??
They are loud, dramatic, and use alot of distortion, sounds mainstream to me to some extent, even if they don't want to be.
there's probably a good reason
why anyone can do a pretty convincing impression of matt bellamy and why kids buy bad zoom and boss effects pedals for their guitars.
I have never considered Muse progressive, there really doesn't seem to be anything genuinely interesting going on. Yes, wow, you can play some amazingly fast arpeggios on your piano and you obviously learnt some Rachmaninov at some point. He's like the guy at your old school band practices who constantly widdles away shred solos while you're trying to write something.
Muse is just dirty riff, big chorus, more dirty riff. I would maybe like them if they did't take themselves seriously (seem to). Not to mention the horrible horrible mega compression on their albums. Whatever happened to peaks and troughs?!
they don't take themselves seriously
this seems to be a misconception of many people who aren't big Muse followers.
and from what you've written i would asume that you think Muse can't really write songs that well, which is definitely not true. it's not all self important wankfest that many people believe.
I've heard all of their albums apart from their latest one
and I'd say it was pretty much self important wankfest. They're by no means the worst band ever, but there is no joy in listening to them for me. Teen angsty in a bad way.
Lyrically I think they are really really poor, I find it almost embarassing. Maybe if they were an instrumental band they would be passable.
^ kind of agree.
I think on Absolution and Black Holes they reckon they're a far better band than they actually are.
And yes, i agree that they are not progressive, and i don't understand why folk hail them as such.
I also wouldn't say they take themselves seriously (at least until the last album when they seemed to go a bit left-at-the-traffic-lights)
i'm not really a lyrics person
although Bellamy's lyrics tend to be either hit or miss and he does recycle some of his lines a bit too often, to say they're embarassing however, is very harsh indeed. if their main focus was the lyrics i could understand a bit more critisism but essentially the music is the driving force behind Muse.
If I wanted an instrumental rock band
I'd listen to something like the Samuel Jackson Five. Godspeed but with only interesting bits basically. Muse are writing the kind of songs that seem to imply an important role for their lyrics but they just cram a bunch of melodramatic verbs into a big void of blergh! fallign, crushing, feeling, slipping, fighting, into turgid nothingness!
his voice is important and the lyrics are necessary
but i don't think the content of these lyrics is overly important, they're not exactly the most profound i've ever heard but i'm of the opinion that they don't need to be. his voice on the other hand is very important to how the music sounds.
i guess we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.
Yes
there's no sense baiting you since you're obviously just a sane minded person with a different opinion to me. Whatever is said and done on these forums I always believe that if you enjoy it it's right for you to listen to it. Just don't expect to see me at the next super stadium gig and whatnot.
i'm just glad someone responded to my original post
it's unlike me to make the effort to write something so long but it was Muse, so i had to really. ;)
Have you ever heard?
Kid A that's a whole different dimension, I can say How to Disappear Completely is better than Hurricanes & Butterflies.
...
showbiz - 8
origin - 10
absolution - 9
black holes - 6
^ acceptable evaluation
if not entirely my view.
indeed
i find it supremely acceptable
Close enough anyway
I hate
the way he breathes in at the end of every line and makes a noise like he's choking on a Jacobs cracker.
that made me laugh out loud in the office
oh dear!
I can't listen to more than
one Muse song in a row. I like quite a few of their songs, but on-mass it is painful.
Muse are such a
PUBLIC SCHOOL band.
My Evaluation
I'd give all their albums a 7, just because it's flashy, loud, dramatic, but pointless, & doesn't last long, Sorta like saying " WOW" at an explosion for ten seconds than losing any interest you had previous. But maybe I should relisten to OoS, but I can say this about their rest of their albums. Like most would put it just good Arena Rock, I would compare them to Coldplay, but I don't feel like thinking about it. I use to liked them alot and got all their albums and listen to them on repeat along with MCR, and even got a friend who never heard rock music before hooked on it, he now even comes to me for recommendations, but than I started listening to Radiohead & some indie bands, than 6 months later it juat didn't seem the same to me, I probably sound like a douche saying this, but I had the The Bends before any Muse songs & I didn't even touch it until a year later when Radiohead started to seem midly interesting.
I know
how much people hate talking about Radiohead.
First 2 albums are good
second 2 are not so good.
I preferred seeing them in Newport Arena to Glasto.
Matt Bellamy is rather hilarious with some funny ideas about space though.
They were one of the first bands I loved but don't we all hate it a little when everyone else loves our fave band?
Uno and Cave are some of my fave songs ever.
I can't see how people think Absolution is a better album than BH&R
As far as I can see, 'Blackout' is the only properly quality song on there.
My ratings;
Showbiz - 7
OoS - 10
Absolution - 7
BH&R - 8.5
'Take A Bow' is one of the best openers to an album I've heard.
Re: Lyrics.
Don't listen to them, just hear them and enjoy the voice :)
I'd say:
Showbiz: 7.5
OoS: 6.5
the one after that: 4
the last one: didn't bother
You'd say:
stop wasting my time with your posts about bands you don't really care about.
On reflection, I think we'd both be right.
nah
all muse albums 1/10
