i want to buy a present for a guy who is a serious jazz afficionado and will probably own everything in this particular genre that he could possibly want.
i was hoping to buy something he's not heard before and would like. i know he likes the aforementionned artists and i was considering getting him Battles 'mirrored' but i'm not sure.
any suggestions will be grrreatly appreciated.
Calculating Infinity by Dillinger Escape Plan
It has a fair amount of jazz influence in there.
And if he doesn't like it, fuck him right?
Good attitude!
do this.
you're saying i should fuck someone
if they don't like DEP?
Yeah, but tenderly
to make up for hurting his ears.
Hold him afterwards.
DEP were the first band that sprung to mind
when I saw the thread title
Professor long hair
- Or John mCLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, He may have this but would surely appreciate the gesture - Its kinda like late 70's jazz dillinger with strings
/
Faraquet - The View From This Tower
or
Dirty Projectors - Rise Above
A Starbucks gift card
and hope he uses it to buy coffee and pastries.
as opposed to hoping he uses it for what?
high class hookers and crack?
They sell those at Starbucks now!?
Well I know what I'M doing after work.
Yeah
but it gets confusing though. You ask for a tall hooker and you end up with a midget.
In the US
Starbucks are the new record stores, eh. Amy Winehouse and the like...y'know, the the beard stroking latte crowd.
Whenever I go inside I feel so bad for the chick listening to Paul McCartney all day I tip them even though I just paid $4 for a freakin coffee. I mean, how much am I supposed to tip somebody for handing me a cup of coffee? But PM?, poor girl deserves a buck.
.
"beard stroking latte crowd" ! lol, that's a great categorization :)
Try Flat Earth Society
I saw them supporting Fantomas a few years back and they really blew me away. Big band/jazz/Mr Bungle/avant garde/Acoustic Ladyland all spring to mind. Try 'Psycho Scout', it's brilliant.
the first thing that sprung to mind was a solid steel mix by dj food (i think)
it's got a four tet song on it as well as some herbie hancock, loads of other stuff mixed in. it's a few years old now so mot sure if you can still get it, but it's definitely got plenty of jazz / electronica influences on it.
Yeah "Now Listen"
by DJ Food and DK. It's class, could be appreciated by a jazz afficionado.

Prefuse 73

Squarepusher?
try...diagonal!
jazzy, bit proggy and generally fucking gooooood!

A hooker
epehl duath!
jazzy heavyness of the first order

I love the censorship
On the front page. Herbie Hanc**k has cheered me right up.
What about Ghost Rock by Nomo? It's more like new Afrobeat but reminds me of 70s Herbie in places. Or maybe Bodily Functions by Herbert. That's pretty jazz without actually being jazz and an absolute classic. My final suggestion would be Robert Wyatt, preferably the last one, Comicopera. So good I can't even talk about it right now.
censorship is great!

What about
one of the Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid albums?
^this
may well be your best bet if he jazznt got it already.
The new
Polar Bear album is out in a few days isn't it? That would probably work well.
Also, this album is amazing and may have fallen under his radar as it's not really by "jazz" musicians - http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=28609
Yeah, it's really good that.
Features members of Nomo too, which i didn't know until I just read that review.
You can't go wrong with any Seb Roachford projects either.
Tortoise
Caribou
Pere Ubu
Yeasayer (?)
Wildbirds And Peacedrums
Kayodot
Eric Chenaux
Do Make Say Think
CHROME
HOOF
how about the last Earth record
it's not as lively sounding as a lot of jazz records but the guitar sounds are perfect and by having Steve Moore guesting on a lot of the tracks it could provide a tenuous connection to your friends love of jazz.
...
You can get the Polar Bear record now direct from the record company - www.tinangelrecords.co.uk I think. Battles is probably a good shout too though, I reckon.
I'd recommend
"Out There" by the Heliocentrics, a Malcolm Catto project. From your description of what he likes, it may well be up his street.
