  • No Wild Beasts

gash. Burial or Radiohead it is then.

    • crap

odds - laura marling or burial

    • Stainless Style ftw

  • Neon Neon

just because its Gruff based. Otherwise Do You Like Rock Music? Ta.

    • Ladbrokes

      Gonna stick £10 on Burial

  • Wow, BSP make their worst album and it gets nominated

    for a Mercury. Figures

    • Exaclty.

How did it end up on this list I'll never know - hollow and overproduced shite.

    • no no no, I disagree, as is my right.

      • WTF?

Totally disagree with this. Think DYLRM? is a great album. Career high point so far. I'm surprised it made the list but I think it's well deserved.

    • WHAT?!

Do You Like Rock Music? is a great album!

In Rainbows pips it for me though.

  • Elbow FTW!!!

  • Burial, surely?

Boo to Last Shadow Puppets. >:(

    • or Radiohead

as they will give the money to a good cause!

  • is it radiohead who have never won the mercury one?

either them or elbow really.the rest i havent really heard

    • They've been robbed

They've been nominated 4 times, but never won it. Then again, they don't really need to.

  • gotta be burial

how much is the entrance fee for trying to get into this anyway?

  • No Portishead, but Neon Neon?

    Shit.

    • Maybe Gruff's work ethic is being rewarded..

      portishead are lazy fucks.

      • Quality, not quantity.

Stainless Style promised so much, but it's so bad really.

    • yeah thats what i thought!

to be fair i do really dig stainless style (bar the first two hip-hop songs).

Third should really, really, really be on that list

Elbow for the win. Its about time. Richard Hawley should have won with Coles Corner. Last year was just a joke. I don't have high hopes that they will actually win but they deserve to. Although In Rainbows is the strongest record on that list

  • Short Odds?

    Where's the 50-1 outsider?

It's all a bit meh, realy. I'd quite like Elbow or BSP to win, even though I'm not that keen on the new albums.

  • Burial, by far

Althoguh I'd be happy to see Neon Neon win it too.

  • hmmm

would love it to be neon neon. but..

  • Better line-up than last year

    Burial MUST win it.

  • Gotta be Radiohead

    Suuuuurely

    • I'd vote for..

Rachel Unthank. has anyone heard this? it's brilliant.

      • ^ Yes.

        It's stunning.
Surprisingly close odds for all of them, really. But I might have a wee flutter on the Unthanks just to show support.

      • No I haven't but...

... I reviewed them briefly for last year's Green Man Festival for DiS:

"A little later, sounds of traditional folk melodies with percussive clog dancing drifts from the main stage as DiS rests on the banking, watching clouds and flying ducks as we let the Green Man vibe reset our stress meters. Rachel Unthank and the Winterset are the source."

  • Meh

    .

  • do Radiohead hold the record for biggest Mercury losers?

they seem to get nominated for the sake of it every time with never any real expectation that they'll win. even The Eraser did!

  • Neon Neon

It really isn't very good is it?

Good to see the Lara Marling LP recognised, my fave of the year so far.

    • i am surprised

      at the lack of Portishead

      Third is a masterpiece

  • wow

    that list is bad

some ok albums on there, but best british album of the year? hmmm

radiohead for me, best album on the list by far

    no portishead?

good on the portico quartet, they always used to busk on the southbank with their strange hang drums

    • Saw PQ down there for the Southbank Festival last summer...

and they were pretty good, but they don't deserve to be anywhere near this list. Good luck to them, though.

I'd give it to Burial or Laura Marling off that list.

  • Last Shadow Puppets!?!?!?11

    WHY!!!!!111

    • It's a good album.

      Well, I like it anyway...

  • FRIGHTENED RABBIT ?

why are they not on the list ? some good albums there but quite a few duds too.

    • No

      Portishead or Wild Beasts.
Yet the poor Neon Neon album gets in, and a very average BSP album gets the nod.
Very weak. Betting odds aren't that hot either.

Radiohead FTW this time, I think.

    • No one other than the people on this board

have ever heard of Frightened Rabbit. Get over yourselves.

  • I hope Radiohead win it

In Rainbows is a great album.

  • Pointless, pointless award

What's the point in the token acts not many of heard of, they're never going to win.

What's the point of rewarding record sales and hype over musical originality and craft?

    • pointless ?

i always thought the point of this award was to showcase the best albums regardless of how many people have bought them ?

      • Yes, but it doesn't do that does it

, every year they go for a majority of safe bets that have iether sold really well, garnered loads of hype, or both.

Unless you think Adele album is better than Future of the Left or Youthmovies of course..

  • Small point, but...

It's actually just the "Mercury Prize" now, rather than "Mercury Music Prize".

    Carry on...

(Laura Marling or Elbow for me.)

  • bURIAL OWNS IT METHINKS

    • Oops, caps was on

      • You could get yourself a good little collection...

        ...of Mercury nominated records inc.

        Simply Red – Stars
        Sting – Ten Summoner's Tales
        Take That – Everything Changes
        M People – Elegant Slumming
Mark Morrison – Return of the Mack
        The Spice Girls – Spice
Robbie Williams – Life Thru a Lens
        Stereophonics – Performance and Cocktails
Richard Ashcroft – Alone with Everybody
The Thrills – So Much for the City
The Darkness – Permission to Land
Joss Stone – The Soul Sessions
        Keane – Hopes and Fears
KT Tunstall – Eye to the Telescope
        Hard-Fi – Stars of CCTV

      • No love for Robert Plant & Alison Krauss?

Raising Sands is a beautiful album IMO.

Burial, Elbow, Radiohead I'd like to see win too.

  • lastshadowpuppets

    deserve

  • I knew Rachel Unthank would be nominated

I think it's a good list, apart from the glaring omission of Portishead.

    • My friend Steph plays piano

in Rachel Unthank. Mercury Nominated -Crazy!

  • Burial = Crap

    IMHO.

Sounds like a dodgy dance LP from Bristol from 1995.

I really think this is a case of people believing the media created hype. As if Thom Yorke knows anything about Dubstep!

    • agree

Really think the Burial album is overrated.

    • ..

      QUIET.

      • Very true

It sounds like someone putting a cloth over a UK garage track from 99.

        • whilst i agree it's over-rated, i still thoroughly enjoy it

        • ^^^^^^

Nail hit squarely on it's head!

    • thats why I like it

cos it sounds like a dodgey dance LP from Bristol from 1995.

It sounds like he has killed UK Garage and brought it back to life as some kinda ghost. Hell its better than all the stuff on that list and some.

Not everyones gona like it of course.

  • Very happy...

...that BSP are nominated - OK, it isn't their finest album, but they deserve it, no question.

I hope they or Radiohead do it to be honest.

  • BSP FTW

maybe not their best, but still pretty great.
    the decline of>dylrm>open season

wild beats should be on there though.

  • "MIA, Foals, Burial, Portishead I reckon are all dead certs"

Oh well, shows what I know. Quite surprised at the lack of MIA and Portishead, surely they are two of the best UK records of the past year.

Bit surprised at those odds, surely Portico Quartet and Rachel Unthank & The Winterset are real outsiders.

I'd go for Radiohead out of those, great album although they don't exactly need the publicity.

  • .

i thought estelle and adele were the same person

    • Terrible list

      Adele
      Estelle
      Radiohead
      Last Shadow Puppets

      Don't make me larf.

  • Burial

    Without a doubt!!!

Wonder how he's gonna collect his award?

  • Burial

    methinks.

  • Betfair odds

    Adele 8.2
    British Sea Power 9.2
    Burial 5
    Elbow 7
    Estelle 8.6
    Laura Marling 7.6
    Neon Neon 11.5
    Portico Quartet 11.5
    Rachel Unthank 11.5
    Radiohead 3.6
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss 6.8
    The Last Shadow Puppets 6

Think that Elbow at 7's there are worth a plump.

  • In Rainbows is probably my favourite there

But I think BSP or Burial ought to get it - both amazing albums, and it's not like Radiohead exactly need more publicity. Also, it'll be fun to see how Burial accepts the prize if he (?) wins...

Like everyone else, I'm a bit stunned that they found room for Neon Neon and Last Shadow Puppets but not for Portishead (quite surprised at the lack of Foals as well actually).

  • Burial

He won't win it cos he won't turn up, even though he probably should.

I could see it going to Radiohead like, especially with the internet release situation.

  • Alex Turner

could go a whole year without making any music at all and he'd still get on the list.

  • Surely Radiohead have to win it this year!

Burial or Robert Plant & Alison Kraus if not.

Where is M.I.A. and Portishead?! Silly silly people.

  • Burial

    To win!

He is the best on that list by a long long way.

He wouldn't turn up to collect the award I wouldn't think. But his label boss Kode9 might along with a pose.

No one turning up to get it is still alot better than Klaxons speach last year.

  • what a load of shit

not one decent LP on there

    • Apart from

British Sea Power, Burial, Elbow, Neon Neon and Radiohead

  • I don't feel strongly about any of those bands

  • no fuck buttons?

    completely bottled it, the cunts.

    • Sorry....what?

      ESTELLE

  • a good list

some of the pillocks here need to remember that if it were all "critically acclaimed" bands, with maybe Radiohead the only top 10 singles band to get nominated...no-one'd give a shit! the award would be rendered pointless and benefits to people like Rachel Unthank or Portico Quarter would disappear. as always, some people need some perspective.

btw, anyone saying Youthmovies or Fuck Buttons really should just stop. right now. just stop. they're shit. very shit. please. stop. stop. stop.

  • I thought you only got nominated

if you sold under a certain amount of records?

    • Hehe

I saw a band jam on the South Bank about 2 years ago and was absolutely mesmerised. Never did find out their name. Until i looked on the Portico Quartet website just now...awesome.

    • That's the Shortlist prize

which they have in the USA

  • Radiohead for the win

because all of a sudden the British press seems to have forgiven them for making difficult yet brilliant albums, and are suddenly trying very hard to be nice to them, and to explain just what jolly blokes they are.
But seriously, In Rainbows, Untrue, or Do You Like Rock Music? would be very worthy winners.
However, like everyone else is saying, where are MIA and Portishead?

  • No Roisin Murphy??

    VERY NOT HAPPY.

    grrr.

    • ?

I like Moloko and I like some of her stuff. Other than overpowered and you know me better - which songs do you actually like off that album?

      • Sorry

        didn't check thread...

I love the whole album, it's a massive grower.
Along with YKMB, Primitive probably my favourite, and by far the best live if you ever see her (do!).

Scarlet Ribbons is beautiful, as is Tell Everybody.

        What's not to love?
Songwriting, production and even lyrics are all excellent.

  • problem wit burial winning

is... that he's not very likely to perform at the show, and therefore not very likely to win, because that's how it works apparently. which is sort of a shame but mostly not a shame at all as he's better than the whole list put together (er, minus radiohead). xx

  • RADIOHEAD

    All over it.. Estelle?

  • quite shocked

    no Mystery Jets or Portishead?

It's so hard to predict with this award though, some years it will go to a complete outsider, and other times it goes to something like the Klaxons or Franz with lots of commercial success.

I'll go with the masses and say Burial though.

  • If Radiohead don't win this it will be a farce

but I'm really disappointed that Portishead aren't on the list. Honorable mentions: Burial and Laura Marling. Elbow record is prett solid too. If Adele wins I'm going to kill myself.

  • radiohead

    or shadow puppets will win.

    defo should be laura marling.

    • Rachel Unthank & The Winterset The Bairns

will win obviously as it is the mercury prize

      • 00

foals should win this surely - where r they
