Are Gogol Bordello for real?

I like the band, but there's just something a little bit pantomime about them. It's a long shot, but they could just be posh New York students doing this gypsy thing for a laugh...

Very much doubt it but...

I went seriously off them after they pulled a slot at T in the park so they could jump about like fucking monkeys during madonnas set a live 8.
They can go fuck themselves! Now thats selling out!

They are a

figment of your imagination.
Forget about them.
They don't exist.

I get your point

But this is the age of John Darwin ;)

there amazing

and genuine.
I saw a gogol bordello esque band playing in Cannes on holiday the other week - so much fun.

A bit of both

The lead singer may be an emigrant from Ukraine, but they clearly tailor their sound to meet Western stereotypes.

(Related side thread: to what extent are A Hawk & a Hacksaw and Beirut merely imitators of Eastern European music for an indie crowd unfamiliar with it?)

I love them

fake or not, they're fun live.

Depends what you mean

I was in Ukraine a few months ago and people love them over there. It's not traditional gypsy music, no, it's punk rock. How much of their show is pantomime? How much of any punk show is pantomime? Hell, how much of any performance is pantomime? What exactly is it you want from this band?
