The end for London venue The End

Influential London club-cum-venue to close in January
The people behind influential club The End, have announced that they'll be closing their doors on January 24th but that they plan to go out with a month long party - details of which will be announced soon.
The venue will be better known to DiS readers as the home of legendary club Trash and its reincarnation as Durr. The likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peaches, Phoenix, Har Mar Superstar, Jonathan Richmond and Soulwax have all graced the venue's stage.
Talking to Music Week the club’s directors Layo and Zoe Paskin explained that the decision to sell the club was not purely financial, with several key members of staff already planning to move on.
Zoe Paskin explains:
“It was about beginning again for us. We felt that we’d done what we could do here, and we wouldn’t want to be in a position where we’re just repeating ourselves. So the choice we were faced with was either how to develop The End, or how to let go.”
Layo Paskin adds:
“We’ve had offers for the club before, and yes, this was the best one but I wouldn’t say that it’s so good that it makes this a purely financial issue – it’s a circumstantial issue, coupled with financial. If it was seven or eight years ago, an offer like this wouldn’t have been accepted. It’s a lot to do with the timing. One of the great things about The End & AKA is that the same team has remained in essence - Liam has been the manager of the club since The End opened, likewise Ty who now manages AKA.
There are other members of staff who have been here for ten or eleven years, and we’ve got to the point where some of the key people are ready to move on. The End won’t feel the same if we aren’t doing it together. This has never been solely a business, it’s a labour of love, and a great part of the charm is the team, and running it with that team.”
So what now? The club will be open as normal until its 13th birthday on December 6th, will kickstart the farewell celebrations. There will then be a series of closing parties leading up to a closing weekend on January 23rd and 24th.
DiScuss: will you miss The End? Was anyone else there the night Yeah Yeah Yeahs blew the roof off? Best night you've had out there? Where will the small indie club-kidz go next?

Do you know I lived opposite the End for a year
but I've never been
-
Opposite?
In the hotel?
-
Overpriced drinks
and a wanky door polciy but any venue of that size is not good news.
-
Jonathon Richmond?
PEDANTS...ATTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!
-
or maybe the high holborn ncp?
it's spacious
-
went there twice
was alright, bit rubbish - plenty of crap people there. Drink prices took the piss.
-
any venue closing
rather
-
In the High Holbron LSE residences
The big orangey building
-
only been once
to see Erol Alkan in.... December last year? I think.
It's a wierd place. Drinks are pricey. Tickets were expensive (but that's probably to be expected). The layout's a bit odd. But I had a great night there. Shame to see it go. -
huge shame
many many a good night has been spent at the end. erol nights in particular. a sad loss - all the clubs are closing!
fabric are setting up a new on in the o2 though so that should be welcome. hopefully.
-
Next to the bike shop then.
And handy for the Angel. Nice.
-
wow
more people will start coming to white heat then. fucking yay.
-
surely
durrr will move elsewhere?

First Turnmills and now the end!
Fucking hell. Where is there left to go to a good club night? Fabric is still awesome, East Village has definitely got the right formula and the line-ups are getting better.
I actually never enjoyed dancing at the End as much as Turnmills (dance floor to open, loads of pillars), but, it was a clubbers night club run by clubbers. Once you got past the notorious bouncers, who did generally manage to keep out the tourists/piss heads, you generally felt really looked after at the End.
The Bugged Out and Underwater nights always delivered and I’ll never forget the great sets I’ve seen there from Sneak, Derick Carter, Felix, Tiga, Steve Lawler and Layo and Bushwaka.
Best night ever was Wall of Sounds night of 1000 stars (fancy dress bash) at Christmas 2000. Les Rythms Digatales doing a live set dressed as Ronald Mcdonald (with Hamburglar on drums) is something I’ll never forget.
Happy, happy memories. Much respect to Mr C and Layo for doing such great job.
Good luck to London’s club scene!
Ps. Those of you complaining about drink prices. Most people who went to the End didn’t buy that much alcohol. Maybe it was just the music that energized us?

aww man, this sucks
Why's every club closing down? I'm going to the End in a few weeks for Boys Noize at Bugged Out. I hate goodbyes :'(
-
My Favourite
London venue - great DJ booth positioning, loved the Lounge, enough room to dance, I could go on - will be missed.

^ Heavenly Social
at Turnmills as well. I agree about the bouncers at The End keeping out the knobs. All a while back now..Psshh
-
I'm gutted.
The site of my teenage introduction to clubs- turning up with no idea what was on but loving every minute of it! Can't go on forever though I suppose. Pretty sure I've never bought a beverage in their either!

I just got your name
I thought it was something to do with mona all this time.
-
used to go
there years ago to drum and bass nights with a quid fifty for a can of coke and dance from 11 til 6 non stop. And no drugs neever. Not been for years but it's cool. Shame. Hope there'll be more to come. London can't be short of non twatty clubbers surely
I thought your name was roast the mona spit too. Funny.

I echo this comment
What a place, Trash with Erol was the best night in town for a good while. Not been there for ages though (I refuse to attend a club night called 'Durr') so I guess it's mainly wistful nostalgia tugging at the regret strings.
-
its called 'durrr'
as in "Erol Alkan's Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr re-edit" of Justice's Waters of Nazareth. So as an Erol fan its odd that you don't like the name.
-
A memory of 'The End':
being introduced to it as the first club in London worth noting that I really went to and hearing Adam Freeland play some fucking incredible breaks. That was probably 2000 sometime... and being told at the time 'it's got the best sound system in London'.
RIP. All the clubs are closing. End of an era, eh?
-
RIP
I saw Mr C outside the End 1 day and shouted 'E's are good',which he strangely took great disapproval to. The End is a sad loss although I have not been for many yrs.
-
it's the end of the world as we know it and I feel very fine
Thank God this shithole is taking its place in history. never liked it. It's where Trash turned from an amazing nite at their previous two venues to a fashonista hangout.
The other clubs attracked townies, yobsters or primates anyway.
Do we need superclubs in thsi day and age? Seems like a concept from a gone-by era. -
How is The End a 'super club'?
It's fucking tiny compared to Fabric, Turnmills etc. You penis
