Glasvegas: Glasvegas
by Dom GourlayGlasvegas aren't exactly the newest kids on the block. They'd been playing shows in and around their home city for a while before the hype began this time last year. The buzz was kick-started when Alan McGee posted a blog, coyly declaring them "THE BEST BAND SINCE THE MARY CHAIN!". Time passed and then these ears heard The Home Tapes, - my excitement levels started to boil over. The subsequent furore on DiS and across the media upon the release of limited edition singles 'Go Square Go' and 'Daddy's Gone' (review) left us gagging for more.
Beyond the off-putting tabloid hysteria, there's a lot for your average indie kid to question. There are the tales which gnaw at the band's credibility; the I-saw-them-two-years-ago-and-they-sounded-like-the-Libertines ne'ersayers (sounded more like a Clash-meets-Johnny-Cash tribute band to me - **Ed**), but who cares? Radiohead laid their foundations with 'Pop Is Dead'. Even perennial DiS favourites Foals have changed direction more times than a paralytic JCB driver - and they're only one album old. No, credit should be given where it's due, and the fact that Glasvegas appear to have stumbled upon much of their sound by accident makes their achievements all the more startling.
Unfortunately, on first listen, those 'album of the year' tags we've been hearing from elsewhere in the media seem a little premature. Glasvegas seems to have lost all the rawness and magic of those beloved early demos. Recent single 'Geraldine' has been sheered of its rough edges for radio programmers, leaving it sounding almost too polished, polite even. 'Stabbed' has been robbed of the I'm Gonna Get..._ prefix and has also been stripped down to reveal itself a completely different beast.
However, then along come 'Daddy's Gone'and 'It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry', which both sound superb, and 'Go Square Go', which sounds like a terrace anthem in waiting. In the end, Glasvegas maybe won't change lives but with its rich indie wall-of-sound nostalgia trip, it should get a few kids delving through their influences and forming space-rock bands. Inevitably the early spike of hype should leave the band flying high and gain the freedom to follow this up with the heart-melting, ear-stabbing, era-defining opus, which we had been promised that this would be.

but after listening to demos for the past 6 months or so the album sounds terribly over-produced.

It's a strange collection
of songs that sound by turns like wham, barry manilow, jon bon jovi and some mash up of the dirty dancing soundtrack.
The lyrics are the most disappointing.
We need a better scottish band.

Unlike everyone else, I don't have any real objection to the production on the album
It's much cleaner than the early singles, sure, but I think it buffs up their sound quite nicely without removing too much of the fuzz: one of the things I'm really liking at the moment is the distortion that links the whole of the first half together (just wish they'd done it for the whole thing really). A 7's probably about right - it's mostly pretty great, but Ice Cream Van is a bit anticlimactic, and the Moonlight Sonata-nicking Stabbed is franly terrible (fuck knows why they didn't just record the actually pretty-decent I'm Gonna Get Stabbed from the demoes). Rest of the album's great though, and as long as they don't let the hype go to their heads they could go on to some pretty great things.

the version of 'Stabbed' is pish!! 'Ice Cream Van' seems pretty pointless too. Aside from that the rest of the songs are excellent.

there isnt much fucking bite to it is there?
it just seems like a bland collection of steady paced stadium lullabies with a tickle of benign distortion constantly lurking in the background. i thought above all there would be a completely visceral quality but it just doesnt seem to be there. everything feels quite staid and cloying
mary chain+ spector+ 60's girl group+ thick scottish brogue+ lyrics with a social conscious= somehow, a massive fucking dissapointment.
maybe a bit harsh. but after giving it a few spins i'm pretty dissapointed.

you should maybe try
new records by The Kills or The Raveonettes if you wanna hear this done with more bite and grace. speaking of which, am thinking of doing a piece about the indie-wall-of-sound.

lust lust lust was fucking brilliant....listening to Dead Sound and Blush now, there isn't anything that even touches that on Glasvegas. different bands i know, but i don't think it's completely unfair to compare the two.

A crackin debut with more to come I'm sure (as long as they dont follow the Oasis 'churn out the same Status Quo/Beatles/Slade covers for umpteen albums' route.) All the components of a great band - good sound, good lyrics, dress in black, non mid Atlantic accent and a girlie stand up drummer.

it's all about the 'street poetry' - sing a song about a broken heart but put in a few references to drugs or fighting.
And the people that are into them are too young to remember JAMC or too old to investigate anything else.
It's bland, by the numbers lad rock dressed up as something else.

the usual kneekjerk Dis review, knee-kerk reaction to hype, oh, and they're scottish, well given the fact that Dis only gives good reviews to American alt-rock, what can you expect but a lukewarm response!
Overproduced!, well they'd probably have more respect for Glasvegas if they had made the album themselves like The Thermals( I actually like the Thermals), but then only people like Dis would care about it, whats wrong with producing an album well to make the music more appreciable to more people. not every band aspires to be an underground snob like seemingly every writer for Dis!
incidentally i have seen Glasvegas live as well, they were really good, eveybody loved them! -

James Allen of Glasvegas reminds me more and more of Pat Kane from Hue and Cry every day. He is cloyingly serious and earnest in an unpleasant way. The Guardianistas who champion this lot are just wallowing in the whole "Isnt Glasgow a hard city?" cliche which does the city no favours.
I saw this band 2 years ago and they sounded like Showaddywaddy with a drum machine. At least they were different unlike nowadays. They also played the same songs as are on this album so I wouldnt hold my breath for the next one being along soon which suits me.
Now they sound like Big Country jamming with U2 in some hellish rehearsal room in the sky.
I really wanted to like this but I've got it up on e bay already.
Please no more wee neds writing "Here we f**king go" etetera up here anymore. It's boring and we're not going anywhere guys, not with Glasvegas anyway.

I think that the record has that one tone feel to it in places (like someone mentioned). But there are some really good moments on it, I like the production too, i think i perfer it to the demos ive heard.
still cant get enough of Geraldine! heard it a few months ago and its a such a great song! although, Stabbed shouldnt be on there...
apart from that, a cool debut! -

And 'Geraldine' is one of the best singles of the year, but I don't think their appeal streches very far judging by the album. But then I would say that if the Smiths debut came out now, so who knows what they can achieve on future albums if they get the right producer etc.

"Watered Down"
is perhaps a little strong, but i've been quite amazed that no-one else seems to have noticed the similarity it's true...
i know i'm the slowest kid on the block, and only heard them for the first time today when i bothered putting Daddy's Gone in me CD player, but it's made me cry several times already, and there aint that many bands that have done that for me recently...

I only heard about this band and the hype connected with them yesterday and have listened to the album today. How did I miss that - from what I've read the drum roll for Glasvegas has been nothing short of obscene with expectations far exceeding that of the first test at CERN today. Nonsense.
After two listens (and a bit) I thinks its actually rather good. It's big and atmospheric in production and despite the protests of some I've read, I love the drumming. I'm suspicious the quality of this album has a lot to do with how noisy they are. It's a bit like Psychocandy in that it doesn't really work as a set of individual songs because they all sound rather similar - and I think that's intended. It's the sheer aplified experience of the whole album which is what Glasvegas/ Mary Chain have succeeded in creating. The comparisons with regard to this album shouldn't be taken too far. For a start off the recording on my CD of Psychocandy is dismal where as this is clean and the volume is nice and high. I agree with the suggestion that it is more alike to stadium U2 in effectiveness.
It's not a masterpiece, but then neither is Psychocandy or for that matter any album U2 have ever written. The 'Ice Cream Van' finale is disappointing and Stabbed is overindulgent s**t - frankly that is all I can say about it.
The lyrics are perhaps going to be the albums most sustaining feature if anything at all. There is the feeling that although the songs are really catchy and enjoyable, they're just too facile to be taken seriously but they're actually decent (Flowers & Football Tops is apparently influenced by the brutal murder of Kris Donald). The tragedy is you can't easily pick out what is being sung as the accent (which I really admire and like) is a little impenetrable for me.
Still, this album is neither the Second Coming nor a premature ejaculation. It's good and in a way kind of reminds me of how I used to feel listening to bands when I was 15. I DO agree with the comparisons with the Raveonettes and especially Lust, Lust, Lust which is a deeply underrated album and superior to this if we are to truly accept that Glasvegas are the Mary Chain-resurrection.
S**t name for a band name though. I'm sorry, but it's risible - end of story.
