Pop-grungers Alice In Chains, whose Dirt album remains one of the highest-selling and most-loved records of its ilk, are to reform for an Austrian music festival, according to the website of AiC guitarist Jerry Cantrell.
The administrator for Cantrell's site posted the following on its messageboard:
"I hate to keep on saying this, but as most of you have heard Alice will be performing at Nova Rock in Austria. This is true. Alice is back.
"Europe is a long way to go for just one show, so I feel that we are going to have a lot more to do.
"Because this is Europe, and a big festival, don't count on any special Alice tickets but you never know what the future brings...
"...Jerry, Mike, Sean and the managment team are doing our best to keep you guys informed. You mean a lot to the guys and they want you to know that. Rock On! And Hello Europe.
"I feel the rumblings of more stuff coming down the road."
Of course, the band will be without former frontman Layne Staley, who died in April 2002, almost exactly eight years after Kurt Cobain committed suicide (bizarre grunge death fact, there).
DiScuss: Gonna end up a big ol' pile o' them bones?
sheeeooot!
I love AIC, but without Layne there is just no point. Layne's voice was integral to AIC and this will just be poo.
Too right
Let sleeping excellent grunge bands lie. By the time the released their 3rd self titled album, they were already a bit shit.
But Facelift till Jar of Flies is AMAZING.
But no Layne = no point.
They upset me rather
Layne Staley was on suicide watch for years wasn't he - god they were depressing
Yeah,
it's dangerous enough reforming when all the members are still alive.
'Dirt' is a fucking amazing record, couldn't they just play it over the PA really really loud? They could borrow Orbital's headsets and dance around behind the decks, in a bizarre grunge/rave crossover.
Interesting grunge/rave fact: as rave culture was developing in the UK between 86 and 89, the Seattle scene was also coming together, and the drug of choice for both scenes was Ecstacy (heroin came later, with the money). Shame no-one turned Kurt on to E, really. IMAGINE how different things could have been...
whose gonna sing ?
jerry just gonna take over...hmm
To be honest
It's not like Nirvana getting back together without Kurt - Cantrell was the primary songwriter, and he did sing a lot of leads, too.
But, as expressed above, I can't see this really working without the presence of Layne. His voice made AiC, to be honest. Cantrell's okay, and a skilled composer, but Layne made the songs, completely.
I agree stupid decision...
Jerry Cantrell's
solo album, Degradation Trip, was pretty good in a 'nostalgic for AiC' kinda way, but I agree, leave it alone. What next? Pearl Jam reforming*??
*joke
stuff
As previously reported, COMES WITH THE FALL vocalist/guitarist and member of Jerry Cantrell's touring band William DuVall has been tapped to sing lead vocals with ALICE IN CHAINS at the taping of an episode of VH1 Classic's "Decades Rock Live!", a tribute to HEART that will take place March 10 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It is not presently clear if DuVall will be joining the group on any of the other dates that are currently being scheduled.
me no care bout aic.
look up Alice In Chains on wikipedia
looks like their last attempt at this was pretty successful.
these guys are SO much better than nirvana. hope it goes well for them.
I don't own a copy of Dirt
Going to have to sort that one out.
The riff to the title track, absolute classic.
shame on you...
... it's one of my favourite albums, don't play it much any more and wouldn't really like to see them reform without Layne. But fond memories, particularly the first two records.
I really
don't believe this is a good idea.
I really loved AIC. Am I being reactionary?
well
they did it before and it sounded really great, plus jerry has played alice stuff live for years and its always amazing. i doubt they're gonna record anything, i think they just like to play together every now and then, so it's not really a real comeback.
still
it is good news though, alice in chains were awesome, here comes the rooster!!
ohh nd put a swift tenner on them headlining the free night at download!!! other headliners though are shite!!
Live
This is obviously all about the "live show". I don't think they could record, but live, I think they'll be great. Especially for people that didn't get the chance to see them when they were first around. Jerry sang most of the time towards the end anyway. Layne hardly sang at all on the Unplugged show. And as somebody said before, Jerry plays AiC songs live. At a Camber sands thing (kerrang I think) he played pretty much only AiC songs. It was good.
