p-rock TV goes off air

Punk music channel p-rock, the digitial TV channel setup in Nov 2002 by two south London businessmen, has been taken off air.

It disappeared on Thursday. They blame lack of advertising as the problem.

"Far and away the biggest obstacle to our cash flow was the slowness in which the advertising came in," says founder Mark Shipman, adding, "by the time we finally had the agencies interested, time was running out, hence our decision to come off air."

"We thought it better to take p-rock TV off air to re-group and re-launch with the correct amount of financial backing. We have proved the concept is strong but you can't run a channel on a shoestring budget."

The p-rock founders started the business with no previous TV experience, on a budget of £2,500. By the end of its life, it was averaging 600,000 viewers per week.

Full details of the closure are on their site: www.p-rock.tv (UPDATE FROM THE FUTURE: their website has been taken offline!)

DiScuss: Were you a viewer? Are you unhappy? Did you prefer Kerrang! TV anyway? Do you care?

I don't care. One less 'alternative' music channel pretending Ms. Lavigne is cutting edge.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Did you ever watch it? I don't remember them ever playing Avril Lavigne..

to give it it's dues, it did attempt to be different to all the rest and did play a lot of bands that don't get much exposure [King Prawn were on it constantly, for instance], as well as some of the more commercial stuff. but its not really my type of music, but at least it tried to dig a little deeper ::shrugs::
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

it's qualities were also it's problems, with the cheapness of the videos it mostly played came the entry level for bands to get on, you didn't need to have a massive budget to make a video, mates with video cameras and a college editing suite were all you needed to get on

problem was, most of it looked so poor as a result that the MTV generation couldn't be bothered to get past the slightly shoddy look of a great deal of it and actualy *watch* it

I'm pretty sur eit was one of the first channels to run The Transplants vid before every other place grabbed it tho, so it wasn't all bargin bin stuff...

    ollie
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

oh yeah, low budget punk vids were a large portion of what it played, but hell, if what it was saying about viewing figures were true it was getting nearly 50% of kerrang's audience figures recently, so someone out there must care, which is a good boost for new music I think :)

they say on the website they're going to relaunch in the autumn with two more specialist channels, hopefully something thats more to my tastes will be there ;)
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Nooooo! They can't get rid of it. It's the best music channel around for finding out about new bands. I believe the core audience were students, who wouldn't always have subscribed to it after the free view was over, so that may be why it was pulled.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

"so that may be why it was pulled."

Er, no. Did you actually read the news story?
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

The main thing I liked about it was it played old school NOFX, Rancid & Pennywise, acts that MTV very rarely gave coverage to and are defining acts in the genre.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

"King Prawn were on it constantly, for instance"

thats a good enough reason to axe any television channel in my opinion.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

The problem is, too few bands actually make videos and the more left of centre you get, bands don't even release singles... it would be great to have a channel that had video's by Godspeed, Bright Eyes, Sigur Ros, etc, interlaced with Flaming Lips, Elliot Smith and say, live footage of bands playing and wot not, but I can't see it happening. Mean Fiddler would want too much to film the bands, all the small labels can't afford to make videos and there's probably not the audience out there to make it cost-effective. chickens and eggs.

    sean
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

valid point, buuut.. a lot of small bands / labels DO make videos. Integrity Records seems to make a lot, I know the last 2 Miss Black America singles had videos, as did the last Million Dead single, and I think the last Antihero one. The Dawn Parade also made a video for their last EP, as did Jetplane Landing, and all Rebeun's DIY singles have been supported by videos, and it looks like singles being released by Fierce Panda are starting to get videos [the last Capdown and Coin-Op ones both had videos produced], and it'd be nice if there was a channel that would actually take the risk of putting them into rotation, thus lessening the risks for bands..

thats why i respected P-Rock, it actually took risks and stepped out of the mold that Kerrang / MTV2 seem to be stuck in. the mention of several new channels is a good one, hopefully there'll be something there to appeal to me ;-)
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Maybe all the Dissers can chip in a tenner each and we can get on American Public Access TV ($65 a week for an hour) lol
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

whenever i'm at someone's house with digital i always take the time to check out what's on p-rock. or i used to anyway. yeah it played a whole lot of crappy UK and international bands, but every now and again there were little gems that i'd never before seen. like the new hot water music video or whatever.

my idyllic music channel would be .. well there's this guy who's at all the good hardcore/whatever shows in London - mostly at the verge and the swan, i'm not sure if they let him in stinkin' mean fiddler anymore, but anyway, he must have hundreds of live footage of AMAZING bands. i'd love to see them. mmm.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Okay, it was only a TV channel, but (and you may not like these bands, but why does your opinion HAVE to be right) I discovered Something Corporate and Home Grown through the channel, and got to hear cool music. It's was better than MTV2. Here's hoping it'll return. I'll miss it in the summer when I'm back home from uni.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

    What no p-rock....AGAIN!!!
Dude this suxx ass big time.Yeah you could say i am a little pissed off that your off air.Now the only Rancid vid I get to see is the ONE video showing on kerrang. Now i dont get the chance to see any Distillers,Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards vids that p-rock only seemed to show.Yeah i love Kerrang but I also had a new found love for p-rock.Cos of p-rock I got into a shit load of different bands and music I have not listened to before such as my band of the moment RANCID,shit these guys kick ass, distillers, lars frederiksen and the bastards.

  • p-rock TV goes off air

DAMN! p-rock tv was brilliant. It introduced me to bands like The Ataris and Finch.
There was no other channel playing songs of this nature and most times had to fight with members of my family so i could just watch it!

Well done p-rock, you introduced some brilliant artists to a wider audience, can't wait for your comeback
  • p-rock TV goes off air

  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

p-rock was full of crud. just boring 'funny' punk bands. punk shouldn't be funny!!!!
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

I loved p-rock! It had better cum back before flicking between Kerrang! and Scuzz drives me insane!
  • p-rock TV goes off air

p-rock was the only good music channel on sky and now its gone all thats left is Kerrang! that plays some ok stuff but alot of crap and scuzz which yeah well isnt the best.come back P-ROCK!!!!!!
  • p-rock TV goes off air

I thought P-rock was great! i don't think Kerrang or Scuzz match up 2 it, it has so many good punk rock bands which i would never have seen on kerrang. Pleeez bring it back soon!!!!!!
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

What a calamity, P-Rock was the most legendary channel, was it not for them, I would have never heard of most of the music i'm into now such as Rancid, King Prawn, transplants, The Distillers, NOFX + Whitmore e.t.c e.t.c
BRING IT BACK TO BRITISH TV!!!!
(+flicking between Kerrang and Scuzz is slowly rotting my brain)
    Sam
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

It went off before, and there was a news article on it. This time it seems to have been forgotten though.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

561 is the key number and is the only number that i type into my sky remote. now it is 454(kerrang) and 571(scuzz). p-rock stands for punk rock and punk is not dead so why should p-rock be. i hate metal. bring back the channel that i watch most. from adam

  • fish

    fish
  • Re: p-rock off air

p-rock was definately the best channel, but we've still got mtv2 as well as kerrang and scuzz. i suppose kerrang is gettin more pop every day, but its better than some other channels. p-rock showed real punk, not goood charlotte etc.
  • Re: p-rock off air

Aaarrgghhh!!!!!! Want p-rock back big time, it was the only reason to have Sky. Have cable now does any one know if it was on NTL?
  • ...

i really fucking miss p-rock. it was the only place where you could get fucking decent punk music. but it also now seems that its gone off line permanently. they could have least told us before doing this. kerrang! and scuzz are ok. but they play lots of different types of rock music. (and does anyone remember kerrang! saying avril was a punk rock princess?) if they knew they wouldn't be able to afford to keep a channel up. why fucking start.
  • Re: ...

probably just bad planning or a bad business plan.
  • :-(

I used to leave this channel on 24/7, was a great source of finding new bands, new music, and old school punk tunes.

I used to watch it when i went to my g/f's, used to watch it when mates were round, this damn channel was my life!

    Guys, bring it back :-(
  • p-rock TV goes off air

what a deprived bunch of heavy metal i dont like it if its not old or heavy cos im a min people. who gives a hairy flying shit if you dont like p-rock, us and i say us as in the thousands of us are now deprived of good tv. us punk skankers are loyal fans, o.k we dont dress like you. ok we dont speak like you, fuck it, we dont even dance like you (or"mosh" sorry) but we deserve our own say, im proud to see the likes of mixtwitch, graveltrap, rancid, the distillers, farse, uncle brian, whitmore, not katies, 4ft fingers and even nofx be praised altogether at the same time, i mean do you really think that rancid, the distillers not katies, uncle brian or farse would be on scuzz or kerrang if it wasnt for p-rock? that channel started a revolution, focusing on the genres of music that all you freaks see and think what the hell...? i mean what the hell is up with farse, what genre? well rounds about where i am they are classed as mexican rap ska and thats what i love about it, you see these arent a bunch of guys who think they can make money buy starting a new style, all this punk ska stuff is a new born stlye that has evolvedright from the start of the most influential type of music this earth has ever been blessed with.Less than jake, spunge, you see the ska beats in here? well ska was a little jamaican type of music that as accidentally brought to britian, from jamaican folk, whic developed to reggea, then to a few others then to things like the clash, who influenced all these now old style big bands, so if you are taking the piss out os punk ska and especially punk rock, you probobly either wear burberry or listen to oh yeah muthafucka rape ya mom emerican bitch ass heavy metal like korn slipknot, machine head or some utter dog crap like that.

thank you and donate so that p-rock can be put back on

    clarke

  • Re: 2£$%"$$

it did come back in the Autumn.
    then it went away again.

the news story was written the first time it went off air, not the second (and last)...
  • Gahh! Music is poor now!

I was watching p-rock from day 1(ish), and i didnt need to change the channel once...
If it was on TV for as long as it was with no money, surely it wouldnt take too much to get it back on...?
  • p-rock TV goes off air

PLEASE bring back p-rock! If not we are just stuck with pure bollocks! I can watch it for hours on end without changing the channel! please bring it back, I NEED it!!
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Me and my mate Josh nearly died when P-rock disapeared again.
I can't bear Kerrang! its so cheesy and Scuzz is just metal shit...
I've grown very accostumed to the Old's cool indie on The amp and MTV2 however...

    Bring back P-rock...
My taste for punk needs wetting... there is no punk on kerrang and scuzz only shitty punk... no decent underground stufff.....

  • p-rock TV goes off air

I spent many a very happy summers day lazily slumped on the settee with the patio doors open watching p-rock for hours, and although that seems kinda sad, p-rock was truely kick ass, they always had the vids b4 anyone else, (home grown and transplants to name two), and slavation by rancid!! I will mourn its passing, tho my moms getting rid of sky in a few days, so i guess it doesnt matter anyway. They should bring it back on digital freeview.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

bah, the one channel you could ever watch and not change.. all good music, unlike the shit on kerrang and scuzz and mtv2 half the time..

their site is on a default creation page atm so maybe theyre building a website??? we can only hope
  • p-rock TV goes off air

anyone help me with naming some songs from p-rock?

the one in particular was by something like At The Drive In....scene from a drive in american restaurant thing....
there were loads of speech bubbles round people heads etc....

maybe someone has got a playlist from p-rock?

p-rock was so cool, not least because they played bad religion stuff...which scuzz does too now..
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

heya!the song u mean is by HOME GROWN and the song is called YOU'RE NOT ALONE. it was a kewl song wasnt it! p-rock shud b back on tv, kerrang isnt THAT bad this week but it doesnt play ne of the good stuff off p-rock.grrrr!!

there other stuff is good 2 spesh kiss me diss me!!

neway p-rock shud b brought back on air!!!!
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

I remember listening to this song on it once called:
    Franco Un-American by NOFX

It was cool cos it was about the time of the war in Iraq and they were playing this really cool song about not wanting to be an American and that. The video was great too.
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

yeh that was a well kewl song 2!it was jus on scuzz a few days ago! what about allister?did u hear ne of there songs on p-rock?
  • p-rock TV goes off air

i think we should organise a petition or something and all put it in like a tenner to help em put it back on air cos im sure a lot of people wouldnt mind parting with a couple quid for the mother of all music channels
  • p-rock TV goes off air

p-rock was mint man, someone jus get it bak on coz i need it.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

i know scuzz plays "taking back sunday" now but p-rock was where i first heard them. who agrees that they are the best. its a shame about jon nolan leaving though.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

    miss p-rock
  • p-rock TV goes off air

p-rock tv aws one of the best things to happen to music channels as it concentrated on many british bands as well as the american bands, and with bands like king prawn and not katies featuring and building on the british music industrie its just ashame that it had to go of the air. So what if it looked partly amature at times that was also part of the pull as it was done by people who took noticeof the industry and in what people wanted to hear!
  • p-rock TV goes off air

    yo yhe p-rock dudes

    that channel was my life.
please bring it back, i will donate, i will donate as much as possible!!

if you would just put up a valid site and let us know how to donate, thousands of us will!!!

    we need it.
it is not resting in peace, it is just losin the battle of ignorance forced on it by all of the selfish, inbred metalheads.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

Kerrang and scuzz both suck.. they play mainstream teeny bopper pop punk wank. P-rock had loads of proper music (NOFX, Rancid and Transplants to name a few) on it and ok a lot of it was moon ska europe stuff but that was a nice change from fucking losers like good charlotte who pollute our airwaves.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

p rock was a really good channel and it is bul **** that it as been taken off air and its should be put back on cos it add loads of good music unlike kerrang where most of it is just metal shit i loved p rock ocs mos of it was punk music like afi
  • p-rock TV goes off air

P-rock was so awesome i miss it so much

gimmie an address i will donate!!!
  • p-rock TV goes off air

i didnt particuarly like it, it was to crappy quality for my liking (alot of the bands and the interface :p)
  • p-rock TV goes off air

i loved p-rock, all the tracks were good and its sad it went off air. they never onced played avril lavigne whicjh is good cuz shes a whore and i really hate people like her. pretending to be punk to be famous, it realy annoys me so much. but p-rock put descent music on which was great
  • p-rock TV goes off air

I loved p-rock. It was better than Kerrang. Kerrang just plays shit all.
I miss all the videos that you only saw on p-rock and not on Kerrang and MTV2 etc.

Although, P-rock did play Avril Lavigne once, they played 'Complicated' but they had put it under 'S8ter Boi' which was hilarious.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

Well, I much prefered P-rock to kerrang, have you seen whats on kerrang? 50 CENT!!!! what the hell are they doing there? get them bloody of! kerrangs gone way down hill
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

I am f'ing pissed off at what happened to p-rock, it was my fave chanel with all my fave bands playing all of the time. Like Gravel trap, whitmore etc. It was fucking great
  • Re: p-rock TV goes off air

Hey Adam, I know it's been a while since you posted this but i'm feeling really nostalgic. Do you know anything more about p-rock it was supposed to be coming back after a break, used to watch it at the local pub. would be great to get involved with a decent side project like that. Cheers, D
  • p-rock TV goes off air

Shed a tear for P-rock, Totalrock and Xfm(before capital bought it, whores) if only there were enough of us to start a riot, he he.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

P-Rock Was One Of The Greatest Music Channels On Sky Without A Doubt, Its Broadcasting Has Gotten Me Into Tonnes Of Bands I Would Never Of Heard Of On Kerrang!, Scuzz Or MTV2 eg Home Grown, Whitmore, Rancid, Simple Plan, The Ataris and so on.
I Spent A Hell Of A Lot Of Time During My School Time Watching P-Rock And Watching That Got Me Through School When It Comes To Kerrang! And Scuzz They Just Cant Compete To P-Rock, I Really Really Miss The Channel And Hope It Gets It's Ass Back On Air Soon
    Peace, Mike.
  • p-rock TV goes off air

P-rock was an amzing channel. cheap videos and it's crap interface where part of it's charm and it gave me a chance to listen to bands not pandering to new school punk or metal ideals. Kerrang tv simply plays music which is too afraid to break boundries and scuzz is a sinkhole for old school metal. HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU PLAY IRON MAIDEN IN ONE DAY!!!?

Without p-rock tv the british ska and punk scene isn't really catered for by any other channel. We need some sort of gateway to new ska and punk or the genre will stagnate and die.

    Support your scene!
  • Thank You

It's 3 years on in March 2006, and I still feel empty and deppresed flicking between Kerrang, which is descending into a cascade of blink 182 sum 41 avril lavigne greenday shite, and scuzz, which is climbing further up the arse of ridiculous metal like slayer and bloodwish.
I loved p-rock, I was 9 years old when it was first played, and had it not been around I would be listening to the crap above instead of pennywise, millencolin, farse, whitmore, spunge, King Prawn, NOFX, the distillers, finch and rancid, mostly bands that didn't have a pot to piss in and were played only on P-rock.
P-ROCK WAS THE FUCKING BOLLOCKS, if you are reading this, then thank you for good taste!!!
