MTV Thinks Pink

Posted:
MTV had announced plans to do such a thing back in 2002, but they were scrapped. Logo, the name of the new venture, will go live in February 2005.
The Traditional Values Coalition have branded MTV's move as bad news for American families, and have called on religious groups to join them in a boycotting of any companies that chose to advertise on the new channel. Well, when in America...
Tom Freston, head of MTV Networks, stated that he doesn't expect any substantial backlash to the channel. Considering the estimated $400bn spending power of America's gay society, DiS reckons he's within his rights to offer a smirk and watch the advertising money roll in.
DiScuss: What are they going to play? Wall-to-wall Kylie?

Guns are bad news for American families. Why doesn't the Traditional Values Coalition get to work on that? -

i think its ace that the world is finally opening its arms to people of all race, gender and sexual orientation...but isn't giving gay people their own channel alienating them still by seperating them from "normal" mtv? a courageous move would be to have gay and straight tv integrated...i sppose the gay mtv will be all pink and frilly and nicce (the 'c' pronoinced with a lisp). i aint gay myself but i suppose if thats what gay people want its coo'...just seems a bit daft, in a non-bigot way you understand! -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Nah, it's not alienating them. Gay pop culture is different in the same way that rock culture is different to dance culture. No one would say that having a metal-oriented music TV channel is alienating metalheads. What MTV are doing is creating a channel not aimed at a certain demographic simply because of their sexual orientation, but because of their (stereotypically) different cultural tastes. -

Being gay, but not 'scene' (ie I don't have an ironic squint mullet or own a t-shirt with no arms) I can only shudder to imagine what lame stuff will be punted out to the gay/lesbian/etc community. The likes of the gossip will be ignored in favour of flashy, fun, shallow pop and dance guff. Probably.
The comment about MTV not aiming demographically at people of sexual orientation but then mentions stereotyped tastes is a fair contradiction. The stereotypes can't easily be extricated from the lifestyle or orientation as one begets the other, the gay scene is fairly one dimensional and the mtv pink channel will only reflect this.
Anyway, MTV are just creaming the green from the pink. -

Personally I think the marginalisation of any social group is a bad thing. If you go into Borders or Waterstones, you can look along the sections and find French Literature, German Literature, Spanish Literature... Gay Literature. I hate the way the media constantly blasts the message that all gay men are lisping, wimpish fops with good taste. They're not. I've seen some of my friends' clothes. -
MTV Thinks Pink
nah surely they would play right said fred, bros, 80's pop (eg wham). most pet shop boys, scissor sisters - any videos with men kissing e.g. christina aguilera... -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
America is bad news for Iraqi families. And Palestinian families. And, a bit scary for most families in the world. Well, the American government is.
So...they're on fairly shaky ground as it is. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Don't forget the Hidden Cameras! -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Are they a band or are you just being paranoid? -
MTV Thinks Pink
God this could be truly awful, but there must be a market for a gay scene tv channel.
But it seems that "gay" music is inextricably linked to the clubbing experience, so it might be akin to watching the dance channels on a saturday night whilst your friends are off getting pissed. -
MTV Thinks Pink
Why does DiS have to resort to lame stereotypes like 'What are they going to play? Wall-to-wall Kylie?'?? Purleeeaase. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
The idea of that 'lame stereotype' was to provoke some suggestions.
Please... -
MTV Thinks Pink
I think this is great and here is why, first off im not gay, not at all but the way i see it is that this will make it more accetable which may mean more gays and less compotision for getting girls for me, and i need all the help i can get -
MTV Thinks Pink
Another dis exclusive from tuesday nights five live... -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Oh please.
What, exactly, is biting your ass? -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Frankly, Americans are bad for American families. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Oh come on. DiS didn't exactly try and break it as an exclusive, did they?!? it's NEWS (albeit pretty dull news) no matter where they got it from. No less significant (although i don't think 'significant' suits this particular story) just cos you heard it somewhere else first. If you're really interested in hearing stuff first, 'exclusives' etc, then fucking well pay for it. freeloaders cant be choosers -
MTV Thinks Pink
Frankly, if I was gay i'd be pretty pissed off by this. Not exactly incensed, outraged, insulted etc....but it's pretty lame and would irritate me.
the worst thing is they'll almost certainly try and spin it as liberating, promoting equality and understanding, etc, etc....when its OBVIOUSLY NOTHING MORE THAN A MONEYSPINNER!!!
Having said that, my old boss was gay and had a verrry particular, stereotypical (read: crap) music taste...maybe if they shoved all his stuff on a separate channel the others wouldn't have to suffer it :) -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
''If you're really interested in hearing stuff first, 'exclusives' etc, then fucking well pay for it''
or watch TOTP! -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
Don't be silly... guns are a constitutional right, but homosexuality "just isn't natural."
I am being sarcastic. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
In fairness, the entire TV channel is based on stereotyping gay people anyway. It was quite obviously sarcasm.
It would be Diver without sarcasm at the end anyway! -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
lol~im amused that you all care so much~ Still iv seen or read most of your "news" on other networks. As i say its not a criticism just a pointer lol -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
oh yeah the hidden cameras! lovely openly gay band! (not that it even matters.. but i guess with their lyrics it does) -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
this will make it more accetable
No it won't! It's further marginalisation of a subculture! -
MTV Thinks Pink
I like some cheesy pop music, but I'd probably hate this channel; in the same way i can't stand the company of overly-camp overtly-gay men. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
here here/hear hear -
MTV Thinks Pink
yeh, mtv are doing this for gay rights....not to make a fat wad of cash -
MTV Thinks Pink
MTVs reasons for doing it are obvious, its money. but i dont think it will marginalise gay people at all. Its a channel that reflects the 'gay scene' rather than gay people, just a like a rock channel reflects the 'rock scene' or an indie channel the 'indie scene'. What you see on rock channels is not all there is to liking rock music, the same is true for a gay channel. If gay people feel marginalised by this new channel they won't watch it, and itll be gone, simple as that.
btw, most of the gay people i know complain about the music thats played at gay clubs, its really not theyre fault! -
MTV Thinks Pink
does this mean there is going to be a lesbian channel? -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
I'm with the lesbian idea! -
MTV Thinks Pink
Why dont they focus on making great musical tv before moving onto other sexual preferences? -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
If we follow that through there'll also be bestiality, necrophilia and paedophilia channels before long.
I for one support that!!! :P -
MTV Thinks Pink
Does your sexuality/gender have a knock-on effect with your musical tastes? I don't think so. I may be wrong, tho. -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
if stereotypes are to be believed, then yes, and stereotypes are sterotypes for a reason - because it is a good indicator toward the general activity of a social group
all shirtlifters love Kylie and Steps
young girls like Busted and InMe -
MTV Thinks Pink
I don't know if this makes any difference, but im a lesbian, and even though I hate stereotypes, I look lesbian. I have short spiky hair, and am into rock and punk and the like. I dont THINK about LOOKING lesbian, but you can definetly see when you look at me that I am. Its not like I put it on, its just... me, if you catch my drift. Saying that, I would be VERY offended if a lesbian channel came out. It would make us stand out in society more than we already do. I dont think the bestiality, necrophilia and paedophilia channel idea is very good. I mean, the internet has enough stuff like that, and lets face it. Paedophiles just have to turn to ANY pop channel to get what THEY'RE looking for, dont they? -
Re: MTV Thinks Pink
My mate's gay but is into metal, does that mean they'll play metallica et al?
Also, i am a young girl and HATEHATEHATEHATEHATE Busted.
thankyou
