Jarvis Cocker returns... and this time he's angry

Former indie-king Jarvis Cocker has ended a long silence by posting new solo material on MySpace. The first new song, entitled 'Running The World' is a scathing attack on seemingly all Governments. With lyrics like "some say the cream rises to the top / I say shit floats", "the working classes are obsolete" and a central refrain of "cunts are still running the world", it seems Jarv still has plenty to say. Although not as much to do with skirt-lifting and girl-chasing as was previously the case.

DiScuss: Is this kind of generalised protest of any use? Is it great to have Jarvis back anyway? Do you wish he'd sing more about kitchen-sink sleaze and less about politics? Hmm?

he can't think it's gonna make a difference

he probably just wants to call them cunts. and amen to that.

Oh goodness Anschul you're so much more on the ball than the rest of us!

Thanks for ponting it out so prominently! We won't forget again.

it wasn't to JAG myself

that thread contains some relevant information on the subject...

If you want to.

I didn't hear about it from a PR firm though, I got an email from a friend.

it may be worth saying

that it's a very clever song - the opening piano refrain bears a nice resemblance to bitter sweet symphony and of course the 'running the world' is a reference a reference to sport aid and its subsequent re-release of Tears for Fears 'Everybody wants to rule(run) the world'

Jarvis still has it - this is just taking Misshapes from the estates of middle-england and dropping at the UN

respect

Jarvis Cocker is a rarity: A genuinely successful and talented popstar who still thinks like someone who has just formed his first band and wants to shout at everything and everybody.

^^this

first heard

this song about 3 days ago and can't stop playing it. after 2 minutes of the first play it got my vote for song of the year. so glad he's back, maybe a bit of time off has rekindled his passion and you can tell he means every word. who else can you say that for? fucking genius

hooray for Jarvis

anything he does is fine by me of course. It's not like he's just 'moved into' politics - there's always been a social awareness in his lyrics, obviously, and the B-side Cocaine Socialism was a direct attack on New Labour.

hmm yes

but his hotels still fucking suck though.

couldn't get the track to play, but those lyrics quoted above make me cringe a bit.

Fair play for 'dealing with issues', but couldn't he couch them in some sort of poetry?

he's gone for the singalong anthem approach

that chorus is great - it really want to make you sing out "cunts are still running the world!"

priceless

He's always been angry -

that wot drove him that way innit?

I have more time for Jarvis than I do for my children which I've not had yet - yeah.

I'm off to see...

...The Wedding Present on Sunday. It's not relevant to this article or anything but I'm excited and wanted to tell people.

i think

it would be really sad if jarvis cocker was straight-jacketed by his past.

i also think it would be sad if we all became too sour and jaded to be moved by a good, direct protest song that articulates how many of us feel.

so good on you mr. cocker! that's what i say.

i love jarvis

yay!!!

My friend

...lived next door to Jarvis Cocker. I came outside one Saturday morning and saw him on his way back from the corner shop in his dressing gown and slippers with a paper under his arm. Twas quite amusing.

It's not too bad

I mean I wish he would be a bit smarter with his lyrics - there's no subtlety to them at all.

What's that URL doing there?

Are you one of those people who is going advertise your web address on every post?
*frown*

'Common People'

was surely the best protest song of the 90s bar none? I love 'Running The World' and it's nothing new from the Cock.

yes, he is

and it's getting a little tiresome.

it is.....

....actually a bit shit really

I think..

Jarvis Cocker is a legend. And the new song is smashing! Got the views of many person down to a T.
It would be good to hear some more work reminiscent of Different Class, but as ever, politics are an interesting subject coming from the Jarv.
Love it.

yeah

i entirely endorse or disagree with this topic/news piece

Jarvis for the win.

Spiffy song - a bit dull, but the lyrics are amusing.
