Last year, the world lost the genius and joy and tragedy that is/was Elliott Smith. DiS has details of his final release...

It's with a mix of emotions with bring you news of the final Elliott Smith album. Elliott's family have been in charge of the 15-song album, 'From A Basement on the Hill' which they have found a for. It will be released on October 19th by Anti- Records, which is part of the Epitaph group and home to Tom Waits and Nick Cave. We can't think of a better indie to be releasing this record with the respect it deserves - and we're more hopeful all funds from the record will responsibly be spent for the good of music and future jagged-stars.

According to SweetAdeline.net, "the album brings together songs that Elliott worked on while on tour for the figure 8 tour in 2000 to the work he did in his own studio, New Monkey, in 2003, with the help of Rob Schnapf and Joanna Bolme, who mixed the album."

The final tracklisting for the record is as follows:

Coast To Coast
Let's Get Lost
Pretty (Ugly Before)
Don't Go Down
Strung Out Again
Fond Farewell
King's Crossing
Ostriches & Chirping
Twilight
A Passing Feeling
Last Hour
Shooting Star
Memory Lane
Little One
A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity To be Free

There's more info and a still very vibrant community over at SweetAdeline.net where you can also pledge donations to Elliott's memorial charity.

From A Basement. On the Hill

I was listening to Either/Or only last night. I'm really looking forward to the new stuff, but I get the feeling listening to it is going to hurt quite a bit.

Re: From A Basement. On the Hill

hopefully it'll bring some kind of closure to the whole messy ordeal.

Shooting Star, is going to be hard one to listen to

I have purposely stayed away from live recordings etc of these songs. And now I can't wait to hear them how they were intended, it'll be worth it.

This is the best possible news - I really thought it was going to drag on and on, but I'm so chuffed we've got an official date for it now. That's my winter sorted anyway!

I dunno. Was it ready for release when he died? I find these posthumous records a little unpleasant.

Re: Elliott Smith: 'From A Basement. On the Hill..' The Final Album - Full Details

he had been working on it for 3 years and it was 90%+ finished.

Re: Elliott Smith: 'From A Basement. On the Hill..' The Final Album - Full Details

yeah, it was finished off by the producer and his former band mates, under the careful supervision or his family and friends, all of whom wanted to ensure it'd be exactly how he'd have want it.

What a remarkable posthumous release. The first time you listen to this album, you will realize over and over again through each of the 15 tracks what a terrible loss we suffered when Elliott Smith passed away in 2003. The album begins with an unexpected guitar-heavy opener, "Coast To Coast," which is pleasing on its own level, but it's Elliott's sweetly sad vocals and idiosyncratic guitar picking that dominate this fantastic album, which is quite possibly his best. Highlights for me are "Pretty (Ugly Before)," which was released as a 7" a few months before Elliott died (his last release), the experimental "King's Crossing," "Let's Get Lost," which is sure to be an instant classic among his fans, and naturally "A Fond Farewell." Thank you, Elliott, for all of the beautiful music, and to everybody responsible for making this release possible.
