Foo Fighters were formed in 1995 by ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl in 1995. The band is named after the World War II term 'foo fighter', used to refer to mysterious aerial phenomena. UFOs, and the like, then.
With the exception some guitar from Greg Dulli (of the Afghan Whigs) on the fuzz-soaked 'X-Static' Grohl played every instrument and sang every vocal on the tracks that made up the band's self-titled debut album. Fellow ex-Nirvana man Krist Novoselic was originally in line to be in the Foo Fighters. Since the release of 1997's The Color And The Shape, the Foo Fighters have been a commercially successful band capable of headlining festivals the world over.
