What is the best album to start with the Dirty Three?

Someone recommended Ocean Songs. Is this the best starting point?

  • well its the best one, so maybe

or maybe not! but actually all of them are brilliant so you cant really make a wrong move.

  • ocean songs or 'she has no strings apolllo'

'Ocean Songs' hangs together more as a whole and is absolutely beautiful, genuinely evocative of the sea. But because it is so coherent it is also somewhat samey. 'she has no strings' is more varied, includes a real rock out as well as more traditional violin led semi improv stuff.

    But yeah, it's all good.

  • ...

Make sure you go see them play (if you haven't before) next time they come over.

Easily one of the best bands I've ever seen.

    • I'd sell my mother

      to see them live.

I have Ocean Songs and Cinder, they're both awesome so get one of those. Or a different one, who cares?

      • ocean songs

        or horse stories.

live they are amazing, one of the best live bands i have seen, google them and you should find some great radio sessions.

        • Cinder

or Horse Stories. As said though you really can't go wrong with this band.

Everyone who already likes Dirty Three - check out the Mick Turner / Tren Brothers albums. Especially Blue Trees which is absolutely essential but seems to have been criminally overlooked.

          • Get them all!

No, I don't think I'd start with 'Ocean Songs'. While I think it's the best it's the most conceptual and samey (although I hate to use the word - seems somehow degoratory doesn't it) I think 'Horse Stories' is the most representative of what they're about. That's a more varied album.

I think 'Sad and Dangerous' and 'She has no strings apollo' (save the title track) are the more dispensable albums (if any) but Dirty Three, Horse Stories, Ocean Songs, Whatever You Love, You Are and Cinder are all essentials IMO.

  • there's a quite nice 'guide' on here

    http://tinyurl.com/3fj89e

talks about it well, and i agree with how it advises buying the albums (dirty 3, horse stories, ocean songs, whatever you love you are) to get a good feel for how their sound developed. Those last three are the good uns though.

part 2 is in december, and 3 in january

  • Ocean Songs is their worst in my opinion

but fuck it, just dive in, you're either going to be into all of it or none of it
