Canada's scene continues to bulge with talent and exceptional songwriting and whilst the bulk of the media fawns over the Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, longer-standing bastions The New Pornographers have been honing their sound and show, culminating in tonight's exceptional performance.
Tonight support come from Immaculate Machine, replete with a few catchy tunes and solid performing ethics, the band's question toward the crowd "Which Canadian bands do you know" was met with the predictable reply of "Arcade Fire!" - it could have been Bryan Adams though, eh?
The New Pornographers take the stage with something more of a swagger in comparison to their performance earlier in the week at London's 100 Club. Their combined experience was a joy to behold - a band so tightly-rehearsed and yet oozing the sort of finesse that makes shows like these so enjoyable. A packed 93ft. East, whilst receptive, seem hell-bent on standing still to a set comprised on the whole with material from their new LP Twin Cinema, with select highlights of their previous two studio efforts.
You could go into a New Pornographers show with the thought at the back of your mind that an hour of power-pop could be almost daunting, draining in fact, but the band's grasp of melody and spot-on harmonies keeps things interesting, especially when combined with their handful of standout, killer songs. A return to the stage is heralded for what they claim to be their first ever encore and they seem a little lost; playing two requests after technical difficulties and then leaving the stage after forgetting how to play any others. It's the humanity of moments like this that make the band even more likeable.
roberts, you plum.
i was there. we could have had a really awkward social experience. oh well.
this show was just 100% solid gold joycore. the nonono ending of 'testament to youth..' was so heavenly. they killed with 'jackie, dressed in cobras' too. mmmmm.
LOL
Ace review, I shouted Bryan Adams, but alas, it went unheard. And I have no idea why they didn't play tuff ghost.
i want
to see the New Pornographers !
NP, what pop should sound like
I saw them a couple months ago and it was stellar show. I was particularly impressed with the drummer's ability to open a beer with his stick and not miss a beat. Alcoholism only becomes a problem when the person can't function any longer. This dude is a *functioning* alcoholic. :-)
