Sometimes it is better if a show proves not to be perfect, not delivering every ounce of expectation you held for it. Sometimes it is better if a favourite artist leaves you not completely satisfied, slightly disappointed despite their obvious brilliance. After all, if they’d made one of the albums of the year and performed a set to top the end-of-year list you make in your mind every December, where would they be then? At an impossible-to-top peak in the individual’s book, gazing over a precipice – might as well throw themselves off ‘cause the only way is down.

Why? battle muddled sound – the Oakland outfit, formed around the central core of songwriter and former solo artist (under the band’s name) Yoni Wolf, have to resoundcheck on stage, before a packed-tight audience – and Cargo’s stench of sweat to play for longer than expected, bringing much of their acclaimed Alopecia album of earlier this year (review) alongside a decent selection of tracks from its long-play predecessor, Elephant Eyelash. An appreciative but sweltering crowd sing many a word right back at the live quartet, while rapper Sole (is it Sole? It certainly looks like him from here) acts as a sort of half-hearted hype man stage left as we look at it, mouthing lyrics and throwing his arm around. The atmosphere is good, the setlist great. Yet…

Yet something doesn’t completely click. Perhaps the band are a little weary – there’re smiles on faces, and banter’s free-flowing, but there’s the tiniest pause before every one-liner, the odd glance that suggests they’re not having it all their own way up there. Perhaps the mix isn’t in their favour, even after last-minute monitor adjustments. Whatever the reason, something inside this critic, and fan, cries nearly but not quite. But still: when Why? are not absolutely on song, they’re nevertheless amazing in the grand scheme of show-going experiences.

We get ‘Gemini (Birthday Song)’ early, establishing the evening as something of a sing-along as all around your correspondent – and me, too – at least whispers in unison “if I don’t get to 2-0-0-5 / my deadline Gemini”. Later, ‘Crushed Bones’ – featuring lyrics about London’s Underground network, which has long ceased operating at 100 per cent by the time the band finishes at around midnight – and ‘Rubber Traits’ sell Elephant Eyelash to attendees here only on the back of Alopecia. Not that anyone is disappointed with selections from the band’s latest, either: ‘Simeon’s Dilemma’ with its lovely “you’re the only proper noun I need” lyric is an obvious crowd favourite, ‘Fatalist Palmistry’ ups the set’s tempo during its jinglingly jolly four minutes, and ‘The Hollows’ incites the closest thing to a mosh-pit anyone’s ever going to see at a Why? show.

Throughout Yoni and company are visually engaging, and endearing of spirit. They tell us that they’re surprised with how great their two support acts – Yeborobo and Munch Munch – were, apparently a rarity at their British shows, and Yoni gets the name of tonight’s promoters, Upset The Rhythm, wrong despite those three words being printed on a massive sheet right behind him. A few cheap laughs help the flow, which does occasionally stutter but never stall. But as it’s not exactly slick, either, you can’t leave come the final fade of chatter from the PA without feeling they had more in reserve, and that the band was coasting for much of their set.

No bad thing when you’ve the songs Why? have got – amazingly affecting, deeply emotional pieces of genre-defying modern pop that can cut straight to the heartstrings and snap them in a blink of an eye – but tonight could definitely have been a straight-up ten from ten. Next time, DiS is expecting to be picking its jaw from the floor come closing time, rather than pointing it straight towards takeaway junk food with nary an initial second thought for what its eyes and ears have just soaked up.

Excited

about the Manchester show on Friday now, though unfortunately the Roadhouse is a sweatbox of a venue too.

Bring on the pedants...

I'm pretty certain Yoni's comments about Munch Munch and Yeborobo coincided with him saying that the bands they play with in the UK are BETTER than other countries generally. Rather than saying it was unusual.

and

to say they had to 'resoundcheck' onstage is a little dramatic. They just had to flip monitor mixes.

BUTBUTBUT

I like the review, and really enjoyed the show.

I was going to say that about the

first point. Despite it being a backhanded compliment they were very praising of British bands.

that was never sole!

it was just a guy with a ginger beard.

hee hee...

...well, I was a little too far back to be sure (but he has just been here, so I figure it coulda been...)

Ginger beards are where it's at, no?

Great stuff... Although the 'resouncheck' somewhat dampened their entry (for it was my first time in Yoni et al's company), when this got going it was intermittently inspired. Yes.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't

Since Sole in Bristol the other day looked quite different.
But then I was pretty near the back so couldn't entirely tell...

<3

out of 10 i'd give him 1. (sorry)

i would say it was totes a 9/10. but nice review. i enjoyed the show tremendously.

To quote Why? backstage

they said to us (Yeborobo) and Munch Munch "it's rare we get support bands we actually like" I think they were talking in general rather than just in Britain. How come only Why? got mentioned in this review rather than the whole show? Were we and Munch Munch not any good? if so, sorry. I thought Munch Munch were ace. Can't really speak for us though.

Seen both supports very recently...

...and even put them on myself this year. Plus (most notably) I was late leaving work, late meeting my friends and late getting to the venue. So I arrived, had a sit down and a drink and heard barely anything of either act; certainly not enough to base a review on. Know this, though: I like both bands, or else I would not have booked them. They = good.

I saw Why? at...

Madame Jojo's the night before and they were super. Worth missing the 2nd half of the Euro final for anyway.

Why - has everyone got a hard on for this band?

They are truly fucking awful! Far worse than They Might Be Giants, who should have been strangled at birth!

lol!

oh dear

oh dear dear dear

fair enough

maybe next time we'll get a review. I'll send you our album when it's done... if it's ever done!
Good to know other people enjoyed it too, so thanks everyone

wah

yeh, why no mention of the supports, seems a lot of words to go without comment, Munch Munch and Yeborobo were both excellent.

It wasn't Sole.

I'd say a monitor switch and a floor tom check for a setup up as epic as theirs wasn't too problematic especially as they worked it into their banter.

The band meant it was rare to play with interesting support bands, they said they'd only played with 3 or 4 on the whole tour so having two bands they rated open was a novelty.

Yoni mispronouncing UTR was a joke seeing we'd done three shows for him prior and like you said their was a sheet behind him.

The show ended at 11.45pm, the last tube from Old St is at 12.35am.

FACTS STYLE
x

i would of stayed later

for more.

i would of stayed till 1am, or two.

or six.

they should of wigged out on post rock outros for hours.

tubes home are for weirdoes

my watch must be broken

as I distinctly remember it saying 12:05 when I left the venue. I didn't care though N8 FTW!

I remember the days when I could get the N8

Oh, no... that was my postcode.

I can't get any bus home from Old St.

That's unfortunate

I can get 3 different buses home from there, choices choices.

Yeah it was pretty late

and to add to the chinese whispers Yoni not only said how great both the support acts were but also said that the calibre of support they get in the UK seems to be better than anywhere else .... YAY us!

As for the UTR slip up - i think it was just that, a slip of the tongue but he apologised - it was bloody hot on that stage!

I'm with Diver on this one I've seen Why? a lot better - not to say i didn't enjoy it because how could you not? But they did seem a little weary.... (and they did have to do a little mini soundcheck before, not only did they have to swap mixes wasn't it that the vocals were too loud on some of the monitors so had to mess about with that too? took a good ten/fifteen mins)

Overall a good gig but next time i see them I know i'll be blown away (like i have been before!)

shabba

word.

amazing gig.
was up the front. sounded infinitely better than Primavera and their set was more varied as Yoni's hand wasn't in a cast any longer so he could play better percussion and bass too.

kicked the ass out Primavera performance-wise too.

brutal review mate.

ended up having to get 2 busses home co missed tube but i would have gotten 10 buses home if it meant i saw more.

second support band were great, if a little contrived but still, reminded me of a psychedelic Giddy Motors. still enjoyable and not bad at all

got talking to these canadians that decided to end their European trip in London JUST to catch Why?. they were flying home the next day after a month of traveling. pretty admirable!

such a great gig.

I think I heard those same Canadians...

...sat outside at one point, saying just that.
