4AD snare Deerhunter: new album Microcastle on way

deerhunter 200

Putting paid to speculation among psychedelic art-rock circles, legendary UK label 4AD have confirmed that they will release the third LP by Atlanta's Deerhunter.

Microcastle will be officially released on October 27th outside of North America. The album comes out a day later via Kranky in the US.

The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY over a week with producer Nicolas Verhes and features a guest appearance from Cole Alexander of The Black Lips.

The first single to be taken off the album will be a limited edition 7" of 'Nothing Ever Happened' backed with 'Little Kids (Demo)'. The release date is to be confirmed but we are told it will precede the album.

You can hear the track 'Nothing Ever Happened' right now, alongside another album track 'Never Stops' at the Deerhunter MySpace right here.

The rest of the record runs as follows:

‘Cover Me (Slowly)’
‘Agoraphobia’
‘Never Stops’
‘Little Kids’
‘Microcastle’
‘Calvary Scars’
‘Green Jacket’
‘Activa’
‘Nothing Ever Happened’
‘Saved by Old Times’
‘Neither of Us, Uncertainly’
‘Twilight at Carbon Lake’

In other news, Deerhunter have also been confirmed as the support to Nine Inch Nails on their forthcoming US arena tour.

DiScuss: Heard the leak already, got an opinion? Prefer Atlas Sound? Think they can top Cryptograms?

  • The

US import version it is then.

  • just curious

    why?

  • I'd

just much rather give my money to Kranky than 4AD. Kranky need all the support they can get as a truly independent label. They're one of the most innovative and continuously impressive labels on the planet.

  • thats very nice

    .

  • very excited :)

The leak is brilliant and who knows it might not even be the finished version. I can't wait to get my hands on this. I love all their stuff. It's diffrent to Atlas Sound, Cryptograms and Turn it up fagott and I like that alot.

  • ?

It has a different track listing than the leak, that's cool..

  • Fairplay

I'm pretty sure that Smallfish Records will stock the Kranky version. They're an official UK stockist.

  • wellllllll

odds of there being THAT many Kranky versions being around if the "usual" UK stockist (Southern/SRD) don't have it, then it may be tougher...

  • why..

does it matter which label puts it out? If you like the music, isn't that all that matters? Why insert useless politics into the equation?

  • yeah it looks like

they have named a few of them diffrent maybe?

  • i have a feeling there isn't anything different

i mean, "cover me (slowly)" makes sense in place of just "intro", as it's the same chords as agoraphobia but, y'know slower..

  • but

"They're one of the most innovative and continuously impressive labels on the planet." the same can and has been said about 4AD for decades.

Think of your CDs carbon footprint!

  • Probably the case

I doubt very much that they'll have changed the actual (i.e. not just some different titles) tracklisting since the leak. I've only listened to it so far, and it's still very good and well worth the money when it comes out for rea, but at the moment I still prefer Cryptograms and the Atlas Sound album - the middle section of Microcastle seems a little subpar to be honest. Nothing Ever Happened is an absolute beast of a tune though, one of the best I've heard this year.

  • ^

Yeah...think about YOUR PLANET maaaaaaannn! ;)

  • I'm

sure you can get it from the Kranky mailorder online store. Their CDs are $16 inc shipping which is like £8. It'll work out the same if not possibly cheaper than the UK version.

Yes I agree that 4AD has a solid current roster and back catalouge. However as part of the Beggards group 4AD just don't need my money as much as Kranky do. I personally much prefer the Kranky roster to the 4AD roster and would much rather give them my money to help continue the great work that they do.

  • .

fuck it I'll just download it then and not support anyone.

  • thats the spirit!

    what a self-righteous twit

  • in an age

where music is available for free at the push of a button, i think it's even more important to think about where your money goes than ever.

  • I

    was obviously being sarcastic.

My point is I personally choose to support labels I believe in. You're consuming a product, it's like saying why does it matter which petrol station you go to if you need the petrol isn't that all that matters. There's politics behind all consumer decisions.

I'm not in anyway trying to be 'self-righteous' in my decision to purchase this record from one source over another, it's purely my decision as a consumer as to who I'd rather financially support.

  • i did see

the "obvious" sarcasm but regardless on that matter I see both sides of the 4AD/Kranky argument and agree with your choice.

  • as in

    DIDN'T see. oops.

  • really?

    ...?

  • FAO sean

    not oib - i agree!

  • I've been listening to some of the leak

And it does sound awesome. I'm not that familiar with Atlas Sound and I know only selected bits of Cryptograms, but I'm particularly loving "Little Kids" and "Agoraphobia" at the moment.

  • Can someone explain to me why this happens?

Presumably 4ad can give improved euro distribution but do we think this is Deerhunter or Kranky's decision? And anyway, with about 14 brick and mortar record stores left in the world, why doesn't Kranky just mail a few copies out? UPS delivers, eh.

  • i think it's better

songwise than Cryptograms (more of an album), although there is one song on the above tracklisting not on the leak I heard. Anyways, as mentioned, it may eventually sound completely different.
And also, Deerhunter > Atlas Sound

  • .

you can get cavalry scars on the deerhunter blog thing, i think. can a brother get a reinforcement?

  • 4AD is still good

but it's lost its identity. Of course it has to expand and renew itself, but you don't buy a 4AD CD knowing what it's going to sound like now, which you might have done 20 years ago. So for that, I don't think your statement rings true.
