Sobered-up troubadour Ryan Adams is to release a book and tour the UK.

DiS was surprised this morning to dip into our RSS reader and discover that Ryan Adams, has posted a blog about his first book.

One wonders whether this book will just be one long scathing attack on Courtney Love (which could probably run for three hundred pages...). However, we suspect it'll be a little like Bukowski's 'Post Office', but about a guy who plays guitar, gets drunk, and falls off of stages.

Anyway, here's the blog he posted:

"here’s something - it’s selfish, but inter-cardinal related so……

i woke up today to a great email from my bosses at AKASHIC BOOKS……

INFINITY BLUES- (“domestic-release” working cover)….wow….i guess this dream is coming true…..my grandparents, who taught me to write, and type and dream, i am so proud of all your hard work today, even if this is a long long sad book but some funny too, just like those black and white movies in the heat of the eastern seaboard- rolling through the windows of our home…..i am so humbled and so PROUD to be an AKASHIC BOOKS author……

man, this is just crazy, like when i saw the first test pressing of the first 7inch record i was on…..

i feel like i will be able to say i left a little of my heart here, for when i am gone, maybe there will be comfort or safety in there, for people i will never know, for our generations never passing...

i have to maybe go take a nap now. bye. xx"

Also if you didn't know he's on tour in the UK in November with The Cardinals:

8 Dublin, Ambassador Theatre
10 Manchester Academy
11 Newcastle Academy
13 Leeds Academy
14 Edinburgh, Picture House
16 Cambridge, Corn Exchange
17 Birmingham Academy
19 Brighton Dome
20 Brixton Academy
22 Southampton Guildhall

DiScuss: what do you reckon the book will be like? Will he now start releasing six books a year and one good album every two? Can anyone make out whether the third paragraph is from the publishers? Do you think the whole book will suffer from a lack of capitalization and end each chapter with two x's? Ever had that buzz of your first 7inch being pressed? Might giving an album away with a book be a good way to ensure his fans buy it?

  • Unreadable

I love this guy. But can hardly be bothered to read the ramblings he occasionally posts as they are so incomprehensible.

A full length book? No thanks.

  • i imagine

    this will be very entertaining.

He can be extremely articulate when he wants to be. and he's a witty fucker .

    hopefully it's not coke-fuelled amblings about cheeto's..

  • he's just copying

    Adam Gnade

  • Yeah, i completely agree...

    ...wh

  • Yeah, i completely agree...

    ...wh

  • If it's anything like his blog...

    I'll be staying well away.

As for the shows...£32.30 for London tix with fees and crap, is it really worth it? I've seen him live 5 or 6 times, the last few were pretty hit or miss, I just don't know if I can face parting with money I can't really afford right now to see him, admittedly my favourite artist but with a patchy tour record of late...meh :(

  • Christ this guy never stops

Unfortunately I'll almost certainly be buying this because he fascinates me. I agree, though scatterbrained, his blog contains the odd amazing idea that you can't believe he just throws away on a form like that.

Been re-listening to loadsa his stuff lately and been blown away by Jacksonville City Nights after thinking it was well 'meh'.

Easy Tiger though, the odd track aside just sounds so tired - he seems insanely revitalised at the mo, so hoping his work is too.

  • So professional

i love how you judge the book before even reading it. very professional of you folks. guess i'll look elsewhere for my music "news". AND, if the book is anywhere near the brilliance of Post Office, then a congratulations is in order for Mr. Adams. In case you weren't aware, or have had Earplugs stuck in your ears for the last 10 years; Ryan Adams is a prolific genius. Sure he's had some troubles in the past but that doesn't give you the right to pass judgment on a national level of his FIRST book before even reading page one. Shame on you DiS, shame.

  • Ryan's response:

    (Stick with it)

    p.s.
the cover is a fraction of a piece of my art.

    i made BOTH covers

    yes, BOTH

the one everyone will have access to later

    but not the SPECIAL ONE

the one i can’t even begin to tell you about.

    either way,

I just wanted to contribute to my culture. Don’t buy it if you don’t want to.

    But it’s no tell all

it’s not “i was wasted, blah blah blah”

it’s five long fucking chapters about how one person found himself

    by losing himself

    maybe

    and also

    about beauty

    and

    endless endless fascinations

    because

    i side with the dreamers

    for

    they have the best questions.

what book did you write “Drowned In Sound” employee.

    what charities do you champion.

when was the last time you did something brave

    something sweet

    something open

    ON THIS SIDE

    is sharing

    so

go tear down the fucking world

    us dreamers,

    we’re invisible to you

    for your ignorant rage

    and

    we will rebuild it

as you lean exhausted against the wall of time

    for it broke your face

    as you forgot

    the way through a thing

    is a gesture of kindness

    and

    a listening and a please

    or thank you

    otherwise

    you are a metal door

    loud

with hollow projections playing to no one

    in an empty space

    take the walk

    Drowned in Sound.....
    hey,

thanks for the pre-coverage of my first book.

no. sorry. there is not one entry that has anything to do with substance abuse.

YOUR JOB is to make people like me, just a guy who makes shit, be a train-wreck, or others….it sells your paper, brings people to your blog.

    but guess what,

i have been painting, and writing fiction and poetry since i was a child.

and for the record; do you know what- i didn’t have to dignify your pre-write up with a response but I am. Wanna know why?

because, you have NO IDEA….no clue what you are talking about. or what kind of handle i have on my own idea’s, my own language flow.

    and yours….

yours…is to imply I would waste my time writing about being drunk ( i find it funny when i am belittled to a “drunk”, i drank sure, but was I like attending the only bar on Earth…..did the person who wrote this pre-ramble, did they get smashed this week or last? I don’t know- it’s not my business….

but i did grow up, so to speak, in public….

and my lessons were unfortunate at times and my job had a stage on the end of it- that or a plumber…..a plumber, a job i enjoyed. but i loved music.

i hardly think i took or did anything other people tried in their twenties.

but a book about drinking, and some woman i don’t even know….

    sorry charlie.

    and by the way,

    be careful

i am a quick and sharp study

and those words you don’t know about yet

    they might burn your eyes

for your hands will be shaking

if you have a heart left

seemingly your soul is stuffed into blurbs

where you off handedly judge people you do not know.

    i am all about kindness

    but, with all due respect-

whoever you are at that awful ridiculous faction of yours,

there is a pier….you should go for a walk

    water can be very healing,

    buckle-up kids

  • Lazy Journalism

I agree with Nic75. This kind of preemptive holier than thou criticism just cheapens the sites/ magazines it appears on. With so many artists playing safe, seemingly scared to step out of their artistic comfort zone, surely it is refreshing to see someone so eager to work in different mediums and experiment. It is also very unfair to imply he would use a book opportunity to mud sling against someone. From what I have seen on his blog and read in his interviews he very rarely bad mouths other artists/ people, prefering to maintain a dignified silence on contentious topics. More often then not he appears disarming in his enthusiasm for others. Ryan Adams has been one of the most prolific and gifted artists of the last ten years, and as a seriously gifted lyricist, he obviously has a talent for prose so I for one look forward to its publication.

  • is this why you signed up?

I'm judging on the fact that all the writings of his that I've seen have been pretty much drivel. The man can write a song like there's no tomorrow, but his blogs make my head spin, and the bits of his "novel" that appeared on the old .com were pretty awful.

You may also have noticed that most of the above posters expressed admiration for him in some way or other. I think Adams is an amazing musician and songwriter, I am a huge fan of his, and as far as I'm aware that doesn't mean just spouting unconsidered and unconditional praise about everything he does. And let's face it, he sure doesn't make life easy for himself - he's a ridiculously easy target for press derision, sprawling his private life all over the internet. I love the guy as a musician, but as a writer I have severe (and based on perfectly good reason) doubts.

  • I believe he was being facetious re: Courtney Love...

Also, um, "prefering to maintain a dignified silence on contentious topics"? Really? Which is why he freely talks about his failed relationships, takes issue so often with his fans, etc, all over the internet?

  • Yes

This is exactly why I signed up. No true "huge" fan of his would ever write what you did. Falling off of stages? Really? And even if he did write about getting drunk, so freakin what? All Bukowski did was drink and write, and you know what? He'll forever be a bigger and better writer than you can ever hope to be. Best of luck in all your future writing endeavors. I hope we get to read a glimpse of your first book so we can trash it before anyone's ever read it...

  • Good points, and

In fairness he does broadcast heavily about his private life, but I always thought his posts regarding failed relationships were mainly sad and introspective. I would not really call them contentious. Most of his web output seems outwardly beneign to me. My opinion of him is he, is like an eager puppy, constantly looking for different ways to use up his energy. Some people may think he sometimes requires editing, and I am not a blind fan of everything he does, but I would rather have an artist who puts it all out, rather than one who is restricted by fear of a negative press reception or how cool he is perceived by the press. By the way yes, I did sign up for this and I am glad i did. Its seems a good forum for healthy musical debate.

  • This is one of the most hillarious things

i've ever read on here. Thank you to everyone involved.

  • wow you guys

    know a lot about journalism.
    what, you're not journalists?
then what do you know about writing content that's readable and entertaining and informative in a small amount of space?
oh, proclamations of "shame" really make you come across as some finger waggling malcontent.

  • ^

    hello ryan!

  • I'd love to let this lie but I just can't (I freely admit I have too much time on my hands)

You say "no true "huge" fan would ever write what you did". I don't recall writing anything about his falling off stages or writing about being drunk...in case you failed to notice, I didn't write the article. Also, he did fall of a stage and break his arm, just, y'know, so you know.

I haven't ever tried to compare myself to Ryan Adams as a writer. What, so now you can't pass judgements on things you can't do as well as others? Don't tell me you've never, say, gone to see a movie and said after "wow, that was shit"? Jeez, grow up. Being a fan isn't about being blind to all an artist's faults and loving them unconditionally. I love Ryan's music. I don't "love" Ryan. God...
