That American bearded bloke what recorded his album in a log cabin, Bon Iver, has announced a super special one-off exclusive show in London later this year.

His debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago was met with widespread critical adoration, including here at DiS (review), after its release earlier this year.

The show takes place on December 7th at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre.
Tickets are priced at £18.50 and are available from 0844 576 5483 or to buy online at Live Nation.

DiScuss: anyone caught him on his current jaunt? 'Skinny Love' one of your songs of the year?

  • What makes it 'super special'

    or even 'exclusive'.

Considering he played Shepherd's Bush Empire last night, it's not like it's a rare show or anything.

  • shepherds bush last night

was a bit of a let down. unnecessarily over-extended songs due to lack of material, some really clumsy instrumentation and cringe-worthy audience participation. someone who you appreciate because of the beauty, simplicity and refined-nature of their songs encouraging the crowd to sing and clap along is really not where it's at. felt awfully gospel..

only highlights were re:stacks and the talk talk cover...

    rant over

  • I'm the entirely the opposite

I wasn't at yesterday's show but seen him twice before- the album does little for me, but I think his live show is brilliant. To me, "felt awfully gospel" is as good as live music gets.

  • i was at yesterday's show and think you're silly

i don't think there was much clumsy instrumentation (maybe too much drum in skinny love), but most importantly i didn't want the album played verbatim. sure, stuff like re: stacks and flume is fantastic just as sparse as it was on the album, but beefing it up in places really worked, and getting the crowd to join is was just tapping into the euphoria and good feeling in the crowd, it was fantastically uplifting

i didn't pay £14 to hear the album played as was, that'd just be silly. what i got was the upsides of the album with unexpected surprises, i'm sorry you seemed to have a closed mind about the whole boiling

  • I'm with brusma

I thought it was a beautiful and well executed set! I'm totally not one for audience participation but I thought after such a beautiful set (that Talk Talk cover was amazingly well done, I thought Mark Hollis was up there!) it was a perfect euphoric finish. Lovely in fact.

I was in a bad mood and standing in an odd spot and yet i still managed to get swept into it. Good work Justin!

And thats great news about the date - when i spoke to him yesterday he didn't think he was playing any london dates for ages so between here and Bristol someone must have sorted it!

  • i take your point

but i just think that the extended, beefed up versions detract massively from what makes those songs so good in the first place - ie how restrained and heart-breakingly sincere they are. its not about wanting to hear the songs exactly as they are on the album, its about (in my opinion) not taking away from them their very essence. i guess it depends what you want out of that sort of thing - hearing the very excitable, tone-deaf woman in front howling and clapping along personally doesn't do it for me.

in what way does that equate to me having a closed mind? surely we just don't agree on what makes Bon Iver good

  • for example

if you hear the myspace sessions that he did, he varies the songs instrumentally and vocally, yet still retains their essence of what i refer to above. last night for me failed to do that.

  • i hate the log cabin reference

so he recorded his album in a log cabin, big deal.

If my daddy was rich and had a nice log cabin in the woods, and an endless pit of money to throw at me, enabling me to have a few months off living in this delightful holiday home, I might be able to record some plodding drivel too.

  • I hate the Log Cabin reference too...

but the album is not drivel.

  • lol irony?

  • Guys? Guys?.....

I just got tickets and i'm not bothered if it is a rare showing or not. I'm just pleased that i'll be able to see him as i think it (the album)was one of my musical highlights of the year. And i'd like it as much if it were recorded in a studio in hawaii.

Will suit a cold wet December evening.
