Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
Posted:
It really was a great weekend, lil bit of rain, a lot of sun and a full (and we mean FULL) review's due any day now. It wasn't without a bit of chaos tho.
Firstly, you may have heard that Ben, singer of the Cooper Temple Clause, cut himself. Don't be alarmed, he's not gone all Papa Roach fan on us, basically, his tamborine, that he likes to smash into himself, cut into his hand and after their set he was rushed to Accident and Emergency. He was spotted lastnight holding a drink in one hand, Kerrang Best New British Band award in the other, so we take it he's fine and dandy. We'd like to thank the band for taking part in our getting Drowned in Sound mentioned on every stage at Reading challenge, by changing the name of 'See This Through and Leave' to Drowned in Sound. We asked a few other bands too, but either they weren't speaking clearly enough or we missed them saying it.
Now, was anyone watching Ikara Colt at Reading? If you were, you will have seen the headline set on the new bands tent finish with a stage invasion and various destruction. A mini riot if you will. The band then, didn't play Leeds the following day as planned. There's an official statement to come later today...
Once again, the media-hype about last years riots at Leeds and the council's umming and aahing about whether there would be a festival this year, cus of said riots, meant that come sunday, the kidz did as expected. Dis members camping at Leeds (not involved in this badness we'd like to add!) reported seeing "Exploding toilets! Burger vans!". There was also a report a death of a 19-year-old lad from Derbyshire, but this was not related to the 'troubles'.
Apart from that, a bit of a scrap between drunk dis-writers in the guest area, a bit of rain (well, a thunder storm as Muse kicked into set-opener 'Newborn'), anything else YOU outthere saw/heard/did to report?

Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
I was the first one on the stage for Ikara Colt. The fat guy in grey. One of the security guards tore off my wristband cos of it. Asshole. Great show. Managed to get another wristband. If anyone' got any pictures of that set, especially me dancing with Vic from the Parkinsons i'd love to see them. -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
The security seemed well heavy handed. at one point a roadie was crawling across the stage to plug something back in and a bouncer jumped on him! eventually he managed to show his pass but I saw one guy had a wrestling move pulled on him by a bouncer even tho he was already off the stage and on his way out. Does Mean Fiddler (or just plain "mean"?) only employ security who have never been to a gig before? -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
Yeah
They were well lame.
Paul was shouting at the security guys while they were climbing over my mate to pull some crowd surfer over the barrier -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
isn't it funny how the nme managed to "miss" both a stage invasion (ikara colt) and the weekend's best set - spiritualised's feedback and good vibes explosion in their report. Also they failed to mention that whilst The Strokes played a good set the crowd everywhere except the very front didn't really get into it, and that headlining was clearly above them after one LP. Pulp - who were another highlight - should have headined, maybe then we'd have heard some more tunes off This Is Hardcore and His N Hers - see, her is another error - pulp did not play a greatest hits set, no disco 2000, mis -shapes, help the aged etc. but did play a great set. jarvis cocker rules!
jon spencer also was really good, as were midtown, new found glory, the vines, the icarus line, sparta, alec empire, incubus (but they were not quite as good as at wembley in jan). the only really shit band i saw was The Libertines. -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
yes, you were the man.
I've got a few (pre-invasion) pictures just developed and scanned, 2 photos and 2 digital shaky shots, all adds to th atmosphere.

Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
The NME's prime job seems to be changing reality, and pretending things exsist and are good when they quite obviously aren't. Like last year's "public demand for strokes on main stage" whole load of bollocks. To hell with them. -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
Whilst I love the Strokes and enjoyed their set at Reading (I was at the front), I have to agree that it is utterly criminal that they got to headline this year. They just weren't ready for it and don't have either the back catalogue nor enough new stuff to pull off a headline spot. -
Re: Carling Weekender: News, Gossip and STUFF
You guys are all right, security were only hired because their company is cheap. I was a steward on the the final night at reading (and all the other nights) and we couldnt work because security kept fighting among themselves.
