The Music World Speaks Out Against WAR!

Fuck Bush
The music worlds been shouting the loudest about why we shouldn't be about to goto war. We've trawled the net to bring you the best reasoned 'dissent'…

Yesterday you will have noticed Damon Albarn and Massive Attack on the 6 o'clock news throwing soundbites in the air against what looks very likely to be about to begin (seeing as big boats full of soldiers and billion pounds worth of arms are sailing off to Iraq). We wondered what sensible things have been said…

Quite possibly the most indepth quote comes from Fugazi man Ian Macaye in this week's Kerrang: "What are my feelings? Well I am of course completely opposed to all wars so this war would be one of those. I think it’s interesting for me as an American or someone born in America to experience what I imagine most totalitarian governments have done in the past. The salesmanship of this particular act is so intense and so almost unmitigated it feels almost. It feels like it’s being shoved down our throats. I sort of think about it in terms of, you know, when there’s a new movie coming out from Hollywood the stars suddenly start appearing in various news pieces. Weird little pieces in the personality sections of the papers and then suddenly it happens they’re in town to talk about this movie. Basically the major media tends to revolve around issues that somehow feed into this movie. If it’s a movie about orphans suddenly there’s pieces on orphans. I don’t know how deliberate it is but it seems incredibly orchestrated. So this particular situation with Iraq it’s in the fine tradition of salesmanship of brutality….
…There’s been a continuous war against Iraq for the last few years. British and American planes have been throwing bombs on people over there for the last twelve years. It’s never stopped. I don’t know what people think a war is but it’s never stopped."

Chuck D, Ani DiFranco, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ozomatli and amazing-poet-actor Saul Williams will perform at the Not in Our Name anti-war concert in Berkeley, California on January 31st. There's more info on the event @ artistsnetwork.org. Saul Williams recently released a song entitled 'September 12th' with the chorus "No, not in my name, not in my life, not by my hands, that ain't my fight, not in my name". To hear the track and find out Mre about this goto notinournamemusic.com

And dis' favourite new band, The Koreans, put it best in song, apparently penned on the morning of 9/11: "This ain't freedom, you don't have a voice to say we're wrong". Download a MP3 demo of 'Land of the Free'.

The Next National Demo: Saturday 15th February 2003, 12 Noon, Embankment, London. More info @ stopwar.org.uk

DiScuss: Why? Should we be going to war? Is it right that the dumbest, most impatient man in the world - whose country just wants to colonise the world by putting its brands and businesses in every town - have the most weapons? Why? Is it all about petrol? Should we be spending so much on a war, which will fuel and ignite further hatred, rather than sorting out world debt, poverty, famine, evil corporate empires, our disenchanted'n'disruptive generation..? Why is everyone so politically apathetic?

    answer:

people are so politically apathetic because it's easier than ever not to care. it's easy to not turn up to demos supporting a cause that, on a theoretical level [of course] you agree with, because it would take up too much of your lunch hour. it's easy to ignore the larger problems of the world because people are more caught up than they've ever been in their day-to-day problems. it's shit and we're all guilty of it but there's your reason. the world is apparently now a 'global village', but people have become more disconnected than ever, because they can hide behind emails and memos and deadlines and cars that need polishing etc - we don't live our lives, we watch them happen on television instead.

to be honest, that being the case, for a lot of us [and i do include myself in this] it's pretty hypocritical behaviour to rail against dubya and his advisers/yes men when how many of us exactly have done anything, or indeed will ever do anything, do register our dissatisfaction and anger in actions??

Well, it seems that the word apathy is being thrown at people who are not out on the streets protesting. It is surely as much a consciousness raising thing to contribute in the press (well done Damon/3d, and Sean) or to sign the various peace petitions that are ciculating, and as a musician, to perform at benefits and contribute to ant war compilations when they come around. Why don't you get something like that together and put the proceeds to an anti war fund. you have the power. If the Koreans have a track, we have a track specifically anti war, and a number of the collective that I belong to would be happy to donate a track for free to this cause

I don't particularly want to be complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, just so fat US rednecks can drive their ridiculous SUVs at 10mpg

If You're Happy And You Know It Bomb Iraq by John Robbins

If you cannot find Osama, bomb Iraq.
If the markets are a drama, bomb Iraq.
    If the terrorists are frisky,
    Pakistan is looking shifty,
    North Korea is too risky,
    Bomb Iraq.

If we have no allies with us, bomb Iraq.
If we think that someone's dissed us, bomb Iraq.
So to hell with the inspections,
Let's look tough for the elections,
Close your mind and take directions,
    Bomb Iraq.

    It's pre-emptive non-aggression, bomb Iraq.
To prevent this mass destruction, bomb Iraq.
They've got weapons we can't see,
And that's all the proof we need,
If they're not there, they must be there,
    Bomb Iraq.

If you never were elected, bomb Iraq.
If your mood is quite dejected, bomb Iraq.
If you think Saddam's gone mad,
With the weapons that he had,
And he tried to kill your dad,
    Bomb Iraq.

If corporate fraud is growin', bomb Iraq.
If your ties to it are showin', bomb Iraq.
    If your politics are sleazy,
    And hiding that ain't easy,
    And your manhood's getting queasy,
    Bomb Iraq.

Fall in line and follow orders, bomb Iraq.
For our might knows not our borders, bomb Iraq.
    Disagree? We'll call it treason,
Let's make war not love this season,
Even if we have no reason,
    Bomb Iraq.
