Monkey boy "mega honoured": Ian Brown is a Godlike Genius
Posted:
Former Stone Roses 'singer' Ian Brown will be awarded the Godlike Genius award at the forthcoming NME bash, for services to, um, monkeying about and doing time, we guess.
Brown, pictured celebrating the fact that his clothes are co-ordinated, joins a list that reads thus: New Order, The Clash, John Peel, U2, et cetera.
"It's a mega honour," said Brown. "Did you know the word genius comes from the Arabic word jinn which means spirit? So I'll take that. It's a mega honour that."Whatever this man is on, I want some, and I want some right now. The NME have cited Brown's lasting influence on today's indie rock scene as the reason for the award. Apparently his touch can be felt "everywhere from the baggy beats of Kasabian through to the Arctic Monkeys' northern soul". Eeeerrrgh.

Ian Brown
made some of the best and most influential pop music ever, as well as a successful solo career when the sniffy critics all thought John Squire was the one to watch (snigger).
He is clearly doing something right.
-
harsh..
he looks like professional smoker maybe!
Have they run out of people that will accept this award, like when they were forced to award it to sting at the brits, cos no one else wanted the 'gold watch' as it were.
-
He's made a big difference to popular music
but the NME is silly.
-
he looks like
he's taken an awful amount of cocaine maybe?
-
Yes
they're seriously running low. Next year: Ronan Keating is the favourite.
-
you know when
those peoples' faces melt at the end of raiders of the lost ark? that's ian broan that is.
-
He's made a big difference to popular music
unfortunately.
They even gave the same gong to Shaun fookin' Ryder, so it figures.
-
poor John Squire
he's probably on the verge of a nervous breakdown at the moment.
-
What
Was succesful about his solo career?
I agree taht the Roses were good mind.
But judging that all solo Roses projects were crap and that the second coming was less than good, can't we just surmise that they were just very lucky in making that first Roses album.
-
I hate the Stone Roses
But their influence is undeniable.
-
He
deserves it more than New Fucking Order.
Or anyone else for that matter. Apart from me, of course.

Ian Brown
is the fucking don. The original swaggering manc. Liam is the poor man's Ian. His music is fucking excellent and his band produced one of the best albums evah! Can't see a reason why he shouldn't have this award.
IN YOUR FACE JOHN SQUIRE.

The Greatest
Ian Brown is the don, most of the fakers around at the moment would give their right arm to have done some of the tunes he's done. Look at how many wannabes he has spawned...that tells you something!

.
not trying to be contrary, but I've always felt the stone roses were a bit shit, whilst I've enjoyed ian browns solo stuff...

2nd coming
Think if you give the second coming a few listens you'll be able to make out that the bones of a great album are actually there. Not saying you should think it is briliant at all cos it's not- and i'm a massive roses fan admittedly. The thing with the roses is- the sum of it's parts was a lot greater than any of it's individual parts. 2nd coming was basically Squire on his own- at that point they were a band without direction (well documented- drugs, no manager, kids and a bucket of other stuff to boot). Ian Brown's contribution to the SONGS of the roses is often overlooked. He came up with most of the lyrics and melodies- an integral part of the debut L.P. On 2nd coming u can't really hear the bass and drums either, just Squire being too indulgent with his guitar. It's a shame it turned out like this- could've been another great album.

until Ian I was never happy- he gave me so much more.
Totally agree. Whenever i feel a bit down, i just listen to the Roses. They let me escape, take me somewhere else. Look at the Arctic Monkeys- singing about Riot Vans, Mardy girlfriends and other everyday stuff. Why would i want to listen to that? I put up with it everyday, every weekend. Sing to me about something I don't know. Sally Cinnamon- who is she? Sugar Spun Sister- what's one of them? Waterfall- etc etc
