Electrelane: The Power Out

Some bands proudly exist outside of the boundaries of the ‘mainstream’. Free of the eternal rat race to break the Top 40, Electrelane instead spent their energies creating a record that is at once both hypnotic and demanding.

‘The Power Out’ is the band’s second album and a marked progression from their debut of almost three years ago. Swapping the winding soundscapes of ‘Rock It To The Moon’ for punchier, vocal-led pieces, Electrelane have struck creative gold. Many of the tracks retain their trademark looping riffs – there is a remarkably effective interplay at work between guitarists Verity Susman and Mia Clarke – but it is the intuitively simple rhythm section that binds the whole shebang together, supplying tension (the intro of ‘Love Builds Up’) and cacophony (the excellent ‘Take The Bit Between Your Teeth’) as needed. More than ever the influence of Stereolab and Th’ Faith Healers is apparent, yet Electrelane always manage to create something distinctly their own.

The record’s charms are certainly of the subtle variety, but that’s not to say it doesn’t contain moments of immediacy. The swirling harmonies of ‘This Deed’ are particularly dizzying, whilst the opening couplet ‘Gone Under Sea’ and ‘On Parade’ ooze melodic suss. These moments of focus are intertwined with the surreal; magnificent choral flourishes, distorted blasts of saxophone and moody instrumentals all come and go with an overwhelming sense of purpose.

Altogether, ‘The Power Out’ is a highly convincing statement of intent for Electrelane. Whether they will ever be able to top it remains to be seen, but it will certainly be fascinating to watch them try.

Electrelane - The Power Out

The first tme i heard this album i was walking to uni, and although the walk only takes 30 minutes and i was already late, i had to sit down and listen to the whole album. Although there are strong wafts of Stereolab running through some of the songs, the album is much more diverse and stimulating than that, while still creating a throughly enjoyable listening experience. (did that last bit sound a bit too like John Peel?...sorry!)
Any way good work all round ladies

Electrelane - The Power Out

Yes, I adore this album too... so simple at times, yet so beautiful. I rather like the last track actually 'You Make Me Weak at the Knees' altho perhaps it isn't a very effective album closer, its so pretty!

Electrelane - The Power Out

Fantastic, initially quite good but takes a few listens to really appreciate it. I think anywhere else the drumming would be considered a little too samey, but here with this type of music it works perfectly. I also like the addition of vocals to the music. It's definitely got an atmosphere, one that's quite different to Rock it to the Moon but interesting none the less and the vocals are a big part of it. Don't really have any problems with it apart from the odd song, namely On Parade being too short. I'm not talking the 7-8 minutes songs of the last album, but they could have done with an extra minute here and there. But a small thing that's easily forgotten with the quality of the music.

Some suprising mixing from Steve Albini though, sounds quite clean for him and the choral section in The Valleys is unexpected, but oddly great.

Electrelane - The Power Out

Wicked album. i would advise any fans of stereolab/pavement/royal trux to go out and buy it. Now.

this really is an amazing album- i cannot stop listening to it. my favourite track is birds...the lyrics make me feel like crying, and the guitar compliments it perfectly. the more i hear this record, the more i can see how special it is, and how they are.

Re: Electrelane - The Power Out

I heard a track on 6Music yesterday. I was thinking at the time, 'This sounds quite strange', not realising it was Electrleane... Certainly worth looking out for>.
