Bikini Atoll: Liar's Exit
This is a subtle piece of work. Just spin on to ‘The Conversation’, a Yo La Tengo-style waif of a song, or the pretty, disquietening ‘Silver Moon’ for proof. It’s perhaps in these moments that ‘Liar’s Exit’ fully comes to life. Sure, ‘Nervous Wreck’ is pleasantly wirey and measurably anthemic (“No one cares anymore/They broke your back, they broke your balls”), but it’s essentially a facsimile of Alec Empire’s ‘Addicted To You’ minus the electronics.
Fans of any of the bands mentioned will undoubtedly enjoy this record, and so they should. But while it’s certainly an accomplished and endearing listen, it lacks somewhere that certain spark of identity that would make it really stick out from the pack.

Bikini Atoll - Liar's Exit
Having just had the pleasure of seeing these guys twice in almost as many weeks, I personally would rate the new album higher than 3/5. To me, it's a vastly superior album to Moratoria. In part that has to do with Albini's production which has really risen them above the muddy quagmire their first album slipped in and out of. The atmosphere in Liar's Exit is one of the richest I've heard so far this year and I'm glad to report it's present in their live performances too.
The Alec Empire thing made me grin - I saw Bikini Atoll on Saturday, then Alec Empire on Sunday. -
Bikini Atoll - Liar's Exit
agreed, its a brilliant album!! was pleased to see even those thick twats at the nme recognised it, and gave them 8/10 last week....i hope they get some more shows around the country soon, i feel an obsession coming on and a need to get on their tour bus....their bass player is particularly gorgeous!! how vaccuous !! -
Album of the year
The circumstances of where/when I first heard this probably have a bearing on my rating, but this really was my favourite LP of 2005.
