Hamfatter: You May (Take Drugs In The Day)

by Andy (quirk) Thomas
  • Type: Demo

A trio based in Cambridge who take regular trips to London, Hamfatter have been described as Belle & Sebastian meets Bowie. It's not hard to see why. The understated jingly jangly guitars are accompanied by a vocal that is so Starman you expect the guitarist to be called Ziggy. None of the tracks on here deviate much from the regular fey indie template. The opening track, 'You May (Take Drugs In the Day)' is marginally more distinct from the other three due to it's similarity to Gorky's Zygotic Mynci's output around the time they threatened to be successful. It's a nice, if not particularly exciting introduction. Something that could be applied to the demo as a whole.

Hamfatter - Hamfatter - You May (Take Drugs In The Day)

Haven’t heard the demo referred to in the review but if it’s anything like the live set, I think Andy’s way off the mark. Don’t get me wrong, I love Gorky’s and Belle and Sebastian but I would put this band more alongside Ben Fold’s Five and Hefner. And I think they’re exciting - a live/recorded discrepancy perhaps?

Re: Hamfatter - Hamfatter - You May (Take Drugs In The Day)

I’m with Andy on the Belle and Sebastien/ Bowie thing if the demo he’s talking about is songs taken from the ‘ham-fat’er’ album but I agree with Anna that the live set is very different. I’m not sure about the Bowie comparison. Not everyone who sings with an English accent and doesn’t sound like Thom York is Bowie.

Hi I'd just like to say that I think hamfatter are one of the best live acts I've ever seen! They have so much energy and the singing is brilliant I agree just cos eoin sings properly without putting on american accents doesn't mean that he is bowie they are certainly a band of the future! Rob

Hamfatter - You May (Take Drugs In The Day)

We love Hamfatter. But we dislike Andy (quirk) Thomas. Nice double barrelled name - I wonder if he gave himself it. Love you lots Hamfatter.

Re: Hamfatter - You May (Take Drugs In The Day)

I think he must be related to Henry (quirk) White. As in:

'O give me music-for my soul doth faint;
I'm sick of noise and care, and now mine ear
Longs for some air of peace, some dying plaint
That may the spirit from its cell unsphere.'

I'd give them 5 for their appearance on Dragon's Den. Generic music for upmarket pubs.

Deborah Meedon wants the Sexyophanist.

To blow her off.
