However, 'Formed A Band' barks its self-explanatory mission statement with an infectious sense of exhilaration and authenticity that grows as the song progresses. Think a blunter Bloc Party, a fizzier incarnation of The Fall, all shouty, chin-in-the-air vocals and spazzy but unfussy guitars. The overriding effect of is a genuine sense of excitement, defiance and energy thrusting them forward. And if it's all just posturing, they at least know how to put on a show. Either way, they're intriguing. It won't change the world but it'll set the night alight.

Art Brut - Formed A Band
Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band
OK, we though that some people may find that lyric offensive, but it's purely a statement of intent, why couldn't a song make people all get along, it's not offensive, it's supposed to be positive and look on the bright side of a bitter and nasty world.
Finally, we've only ever done what we do, if the 'mainstream' alternative scene has finally decided to catch up then that's up to them, but don't pass judgement until you've heard more than one song and at least let a group of hardworking, honest and unpretentious individuals defend themselves, try actually talking to one of us or people that know us...
Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band
I take your point about judging you after one track, it's partly the press surrounding the track that pisses me off aswell, yeh it is a simple (fucking annoyingly) catchy song and that is all, nothing earth shattering.
Secondly, music always brings people together (in the words of the great wise Madonna) , I think it is the most instant and powerful form of expression you can get (second to sex and violence, obviously), just think of band aid, all those celebrity get togethers, eh. Maybe one day you'll be asked to do one. The reason that line in particular annoyed me was because the line is so throw away and pointless within the context of the song, it is just verbatim. Why not say ' I wish I could write a song with something worth singing about in' or ' I wish I could write a song that would help the elderly across the street' or even sing about the details of the problems on the west bank a la rage against the machine, the fall, Public Image ltd, Public Enemy, RATM Etc, and do something to help, not just give a slightly capricious soundbyte?. Who doesn't want conflict to stop?
Anyway, how are you guys being marketed, is it all simply nice uncynical band playing and enjoying the act of that; or is that just your press release.
I know Nick and Alex from Franz Ferdinand and I know that 'official' bootlegs were secretly released before the second single as a bit of a guerilla marketing exercise, and i'm sure that is partly the reason they got so much press over the 2nd single.
I hope that you are a group of hardworking, honest and unpretentious individuals, then you won't piss me off so much and I may actually like you. I just hate the way the music press is so tabloidy these days, always trying to create the next big thing and sway opinion.
Anyway best of luck to you, prove me wrong, I dare you, and then there might be more decent stuff on daytime radio. Take it easy.
Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band
1) The general music in "Formed A Band" is GOOD
2) I'm sure your other stuff might be good
BUT
Get rid of that bloke who talks his way through that song. From my point of view, the guy saying "this is my normal singing voice; it's not irony and it's not rock 'n' roll" (or words to that effect), he may be right, but it's certainly downright pretentious!!
That guy basically sounds like a more annoying Mike Skinner (i.e Streets). Get rid of him.....and the pretentious lyrics......and you'll have a good band.

i don't really care, just making a point, if only to myself. and i doubt that there was any intentional 'bait' cast out. Who the hell is to say what a band should do differently? unless they respect their guidance.
Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band
I do have plenty of positive things to say about other bands and music out there, I love a lot from Cannonball Adderley to Kid 606 to Jim O'Rourke to RamEllZee. Just not this song by these guys. Why bother listening to mediocre music when there's so much stuff out there to blow you away?
Clever though, the way you deconstruct my points and turn them back on me, like you know me. Saves you having to think of your own opinion, anyway, I wasn't aware I had anything to do with the mainstream alternative scene. Have fun
Re: Art Brut - Formed A Band
and i didn't really see my reworking of your post as clever, it was just easier, and a simple way of making my simple point.
