Mystery Jets: Alas Agnes
'Alas Agnes' is a very different monster to Mystery Jets' previous single - there are no New Order synths, no buoyant piano, no real sense of order - but it remains just as infectious, just as exciting.
There's a deep breath, a bracing vocal swell that rends the air and then an urgent, hurtling snare drum. It bolts out of speakers leading a galloping oddball procession of discordant noodling and defiant harmonies. "Alas / Oh, Agnes / I still adore you" rings out solidly with male solidarity before it's back to the careering bombast. It's the sound of British Sea Power had they embraced joyous pop instead of underwhelming blandness, and it's very wonderful indeed.
Talking of blandness, sadly there are also two b-sides. 'Electric Fire' is a frail, out-of-focus ballad and the disparate elements of 'The Last Bench' (a sampled interview, a swaggering bass-led shuffle, distant strings and mindless chanting) fail to pull together to form anything as coherent and enjoyable as the main attraction.

Colin + Mystery Jets =
REGULARLY.
I like their faces.

I think
your comments on BSP are extremely misplaced.
Good song, though.

my one criticism
With Alas Agnes is the totally senseless changing of lyrics from the demo version. They don't change the meaning of the song in anyway, but they don't flow so well any more:
"You picked me up at Kings Cross Station"
becomes
"You picked me up at the station"
WHY?!?!
-
i also prefer the
demo version - dunno, the single version just seems.. a bit limp.
-
why?
do they cut out the reference to King's Cross Station?
cos it's just too libertines.
methinks.

I like this
I really do. I think some of you are tone deaf.
So there.-
That BSP comment
Is soooo not gonna go down well with a lot of people on here
Nice review though

perhaps
i wasn't intentionally trying to get a rise out of the rabid BSP fans, but i've seen a fair few people who dislike Open Season as much as i do.
-
Well, Open Season
isn't a patch on The Decline Of but the first album's so good I can forgive them that. As for the Mystery Jets, I've only heard this and the last single, but I liked them both. They seem interesting...

Open Season...
...has got some great songs on it (I've heard few songs better than "The Land Beyond" this year) but I don't really listen to it much, which probably suggests I'm not a huge fan. To be honest I think BSP are yet to release an album that lives up to their obvious potential.
I liked the Mystery Jets last single (still havent heard this one tho' it's a great title).

i saw them
last friday at the tunny wells forum, and i thought they were quite good.
i was absolutely wankered tho on over-priced cider (how can such a tiny tiny ex-toilet of a venue charge 2.70 a pint!?)
saw some young man called chris t or something too, he looked like an aspiring skag-head at first but was actually quite good in a kind of yes-you-are-good-but-i-think-you-are-probably-a-cunt kind of way...
-
this song sounds...
...a lot like The Coral. Especially the big chord change in the chorus.
As you were.

They're
not pretentious. That's what the NME wants you to think.
Having your dad in your band does not = pretentious.
