As my Last.fm contests, barely a day has gone by in the past three months where I haven't listened to at least one track from The Spinto Band's superlative Nice And Nicely Done LP, and more often that not 'Oh Mandy' is first pick.

Why? Put simply, this is the kind of song that can blow away the dark clouds and make the worst of days seem glorious, lifting the spirits of all within hearing distance. Propelled by a deceptively simple mandolin riff and featuring one of those delectably repeatable choruses you can't help but provide your own backing vocals to, 'Oh Mandy' is a tune bearing all the quirky hallmarks of the Spintos but packs its own pop punch.

As high points go, you'd struggle to better this without breaking several laws.

  • The Spinto Band 9 / 10
  • this song.

    is rather good.

    • ..

bit of a gem of a song

    • yay

song of the year. i love them so.

    • Perfect review

      for a very good song.

      • best song of the year.

        really really lovely.

    • excellent song

they've timed releasing it just right too..

      • The first awesome...

....use of mandolin since Losing My Religion

      • the

        Spinto band rule!

        • Clap

They sound almost identicle to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Especially the singer. I like both.

          • "they've timed releasing it just right too"

unfortunately i would disagree with that. quite heavily actually.

            • are

              you on drugs?

              • They are..

a thousand times better than the rather average CYHSY

              • haha

they may sound a wee bit like CYHSY but they are a bit better in my opinion.

              • how do you mean?

i was just thinking that this may have been a bit wasted as a first single.. that said, if it had would have been the first instead of brown boxes/mountains it would have saved every review mentioning the fucking kazoos.. (a pitfall which Mr. Webb avoided admirably)

                • Why have they...

timed it so poorly Adie? Isn't it a re-release?

                • well

it's the last song in a campaign which most people in radio/press have already decided "isn't happening" on the basis of previous singles. so now as it's getting played (unlike their others so far), people listening to radio or whatever are expecting to hear more before they commit to an album...but the band will probably go away and record another record, back in two years, and the one song people will have forgotten them.

              • You took the words right out of my mouth

Utter brilliance. Spinto Band = ace.

                • this was

one of my favourite songs of last year.

                  Grandaddy meets arcade fire.

Have you seen the footage of them performing this in a cafe? Check it out on youtube now if you haven't.
